03.01.2022 'Snow sports enthusiasts have not been forgotten in the reservation of forest areas for recreation. At Mt. Buller, 170 miles from Melbourne, an area of 2,079 ac...res has been set aside as the first of Victoria's "alpine resorts". Controlled by a committee of management, Mt. Buller Alpine Resort is open for the development of skiing grounds and alpine villages. Among the many projects completed in the Buller area is the Helmut Kofler Hütte. Built by the Forests Commission and opened by the chairman in June 1959, it will serve as a canteen-shelter and as a rescue base for lost skiers.' (Victorian Naturalist, Vol 76, May 1959 to April 1960) On Saturday Koflers, more formally known as the Helmut Kofler Hütte, celebrated 60 years. Opened on 29th June 1959 it was erected by the government as a symbol of faith in the development of tourism and snowsports at Mt Buller. Designed by David McGlashan of McGlashan & Everist its hyperbolic paraboloid roof was inspired by the idea of a Bogong moth resting lightly on the landscape. The Koflers we know and love today wasn't the first Koflers hut in that location. In 1933 Helmut Kofler himself, then the manager of the Mt Buller Chalet, built a small hut near the summit with accommodation for 12. To allow visitors to the Chalet to take the fullest advantage of the excellent skiing conditions at the summit just before dusk and act as a lunch hut and refugee if required. *** Koflers Hütte by Bill Bachman, about 1970. 02.01.2022 In the 95 years since skiing began at Mt Buller there's been alot of change. From the days when getting here meant walking in and Kofler's Chalet was the place ...to stay. To the development of a village under the Forests Commission and the battle between Orange and Blue lifts. To the mountain as we know it today with one lift company and a village with a mix of commercial accomodation, lodges and apartments. These badges from our collection show just some of the people, organisations and places that have helped make the mountain what it is today.
