16.01.2022 This image from our collection shows clearly how meat was transported well into the twentieth century. One wonders how far these horses had travelled, possibly in summer heat. Other images from our collection show how carcasses were hung up on display outside butcher shops. Today we shudder to think of the possible health consequences of such a practice. This image was taken outside Conlan's Star Hotel in Walhalla, Victoria around 1910. 15.01.2022 Roadside garages were popular from the 1920s, particularly in hilly places, as in this 1930s shot of Belgrave in the Dandenong Ranges, Vic. There are still some left but they are diminishing.
