23.01.2022 ImaginArta is a COVID safe business. Seating is limited to 25 people per performance and seats have been arranged to ensure the 4 square metre social distancing measures are met. All patrons are asked to maintain social distancing, and if showing any symptoms, please stay at home!... Floor markings and hand sanitiser stations have been installed at the entrance and we have contact tracing in place for the foreseeable future.

23.01.2022 How to Make an Accordion Snake Puppet What youll need: 2x A4 sheets of coloured paper (2 colours) - here we are using blue and yellow however, you can choose your own colours 1 x small piece of pink paper (for the tongue)... 2 x paddle pop sticks 1 x paper towel roll PVA glue Method: 1. We need long thin pieces of paper in each of 2 colours. To do this measure 4 strips of 3 cm down the long side of the blue paper. These need to be glued end to end to make the long strip. 2. Repeat step 1 for yellow paper. 3. Glue blue strip to yellow strip at a right angle (see photos). 4. Fold the bottom strip over the top strip and so on to make an accordion until you think it is long enough. 5. Glue paddle pop sticks to both ends of the accordion. 6. Use the roll paper to make the snakes head and tail tip and glue onto the puppet. 7. Decorate head and tail as you wish and add tongue to head. To decorate the face, you can use paint and glue different coloured eyes on or simply draw on some eyes as we have done here. How did you go? Send us a photo of your puppet if you would like us to post in on our social media channels!

22.01.2022 The Rod Puppet Rod puppets are best described as puppets that are worked by sticks or rods. Usually there is a rod to the head which the puppeteer holds giving direct control of the head. Sometimes there are also rods attached to the hands or arms and to the feet or the puppeteer may choose to discretely hold the puppets hand or the elbow. A rod puppet may be manipulated by one puppeteer or more. There is a tradition of rod puppetry from Japan called Bunraku where 3 puppeteers create the movement of the puppet.

They showed us different ways to make puppet joints, how to laminate wood (particularly ‘handy’ for making puppet hands!), and demonstrated various puppet mechanisms including a self-standing puppet (based on a design by Barbara Scheel) and a control for operating blinking eyes and a moving mouth. And on top of all that, we geeked out on glues and wood for marionettes! Sue and Steve also run ImaginArta - the Australian Puppet Centre Inc in Sutton Forest (NSW). They have shows every Sunday at 11am and for the next 2 months you can see ‘In Search of the Giddy Gird Bird’ - a visual feast of delightful, colourful and lively marionettes!
