23.01.2022 It’s a scorcher and it’s also a totally fire ban with a bushfire rating of sever today (Monday 11 Jan). It’s a timely reminder that everyone needs a bushfire survival plan. The CFS make it easy to develop you 5 minute plan and talk to your family, friends and neighbours about it. If you get anything ticked off your list today make it a bushfire survival plan https://www.cfs.sa.gov.au/bebushfireready... Also remember that Uraidla township and oval area is a bushfire safer place. More details about that on the CFS website. And you’ll be pleased to hear on Friday the show hall got delivery of a generator to keep essential power on during a blackout. @imagineuraidla was successful at receiving a community grant from the @adelaidehillscouncil in 2020. The generator is from @kubpower in Summertown. Thanks to all involved in making Uraidla a safer place. #uraidla #adelaidehills

21.01.2022 Citizen of the Year Awards will close on Friday 20 November. We so often hear about people who should have been nominated, but everyone thought someone else would do it. Please don’t let this happen to someone you appreciate! Adelaide Hills Council want to make sure they have as many nominations as possible, particularly after such a challenging year.... They have a wonderful number already, but are missing, in particular, recognition of young people in our district. Please take five minutes to enter a nomination for someone deserving of recognition. Categories are: Citizen of the Year Young Citizen of the Year (16-30yrs) Community Event of the Year Civic Awards Applications via www.citizenoftheyear.com.au/nominate Any queries are welcome to Ebony Priest at 8408 0427, or [email protected] Pictured here is the Sustainability Fair receiving their Event of the Year award. #adelaidehills

20.01.2022 Good evening lovely friends, hope you’re all doing ok after this unexpected week. It’s moments like this that test our resilience, our community connections and flexibility. We can’t imagine how tough it’s been for businesses who had lost revenue, cancelled bookings and spoiled food. We hope as a community we can support local this holiday season. Whether it’s through buying someone a voucher for a massage, booking a family lunch or ordering your party beverages from some of ...the many local businesses around the district. In the coming week our next newsletter will be coming out and if you’ve got content you’d like to share we’d love to receive it ([email protected]) So as the sun sets over our district (this view is over Ashton), take a moment to find solace in the nature that surrounds us. #adelaidehills

17.01.2022 When the future is unknown, step into nature, stretch your legs, take a deep breath (or a few) and don’t think too far ahead. And of course please talk to those around you about your feelings or seek help via the SA Health Mental Support Line. This wispy cloud view was taken tonight from Bonython Road in Summertown.... #uraidla #adelaidehills #summertownsa

16.01.2022 Today we acknowledge the great luck and pride we have in living in Australia. We celebrate the many people who make our communities strong, and the best of our Australian identity- we are kind, tough, irreverent, hard working, caring and resilient. We live in a beautiful country, where most things work pretty well, and where for the most part mateship, fairness and smarts prevail. Today we celebrate the many accomplishments of Australians in making this nation.... We also acknowledge that the 26th of January is a date that, for many, is a reminder of the loss, trauma and dispossession of First Nations people, which was caused by the European settlement of this land. We hope that Australia Day is a time, above all, for inclusion and a greater understanding of our shared history and how this can play a part in the coming together of all Australians. Today there is an Adelaide Hills Council celebration at the Uraidla Hotel from 10:30am, all are welcome. Here are some resources around reconciliation which are relevant today and on all days. https://australianstogether.org.au//austral/australia-day/ https://reconciliationsa.org.au//a-few-ways-to-be-respect/ https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com//5dfafa86d19f96ff45552839_ Photo: 2020 CFS thank you picnic in Uraidla with the Uraidla Concert Band

14.01.2022 Niina marni (hello), NAIDOC week to me is about stopping for a moment and thinking about the history of this nation and the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from the past, present and future. Paul from Summertown. It’s easy sometimes for Australians to think of Indigenous languages as something of the past, but by having the audio, it brings them to life. It becomes real, which is why it is so moving to hear the voices," Professor Nordlinger said.... If you’re keen to learn more about native languages across Australia then check out https://50words.online You can search by language or by word - including "hello", "welcome", "hello", "goodbye", "yes" and "no" as well as phrases, words for family members, animals and the local environment. The University of Melbourne's Research Unit for Indigenous Language is working directly with communities and language speakers to build the tool, which has been in development for two years. What does NAIDOC week mean to you? Tell us via our socials or email [email protected] #adelaidehills #naidoc2020 #uraidla

13.01.2022 When I think about climate change, it’s not Paris or Kyoto that comes to mind. It’s the places right here at home which are most at risk from climate change. Helen Haines MP Locally the growers of our berries, cherries, apples, flowers, grapes and vegetables who rely on spring rains are at front of mind. Hills wine makers who want to be making the best wines and not be impacted by smoke taint. We know our district proudly grows so much world class produce and we know we rel...y heavily on our climate for its fruition. So it was terrific news when the Climate Change Bill (CCB) was tabled to parliament on Monday. The Climate Change Bill is a proposed law to ensure the long-term safety, security and prosperity of Australia by achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050. There’s great information on how the Climate Change Bill will help the economy, environment and trade here: https://climateactnow.com.auThe Bill will now go to a public inquiry with submissions open immediately, but closing 5pm Friday 27 November! So now is the chance to have your say by making a formal submission here: https://www.aph.gov.au//Environment_and_E/ClimateBills2020 (or google Climate Change Bill submission and select the www.aph.gov.au link) Now is YOUR chance to have YOUR say about why Australia needs the Climate Change Act by making a submission to the House Standing Commitee on the Environment and Energy. What should my submission include? In your submission, you may wish to address any or all of the following aspects of the Bill: 1 Objectives and long-term emissions reduction commitment 2 Why legislating Net Zero by 2050 and regular 5 year budgets is important 3 Guiding principles to be applied 4 Risk and adaptation assessments for all sectors 5 Technology readiness assessment 6 Independent climate change commission and skills needed on the commission. In you submission be original, make references to sections to the Bill and avoid emotive language. #climateactnow #adelaidehills #uraidla

12.01.2022 Something special is happening. Lovely local Kate King has set up a local Buy Nothing Facebook group. So what’s the group about and why would you join? The motto Give. Ask. Gratitude. Share creatively.... The group offers members a way to give and receive, share, lend, and express gratitude in which the true wealth is the web of connections formed between people who are real-life neighbours. Post anything you'd like to give away, lend, or share in this Buy Nothing community group. Ask for anything you'd like to receive for free or borrow. Abide by the Community Agreement. Keep it legal. We have a number of Lending Libraries in the Albums folder. Have a look to see if there's anything you'd like to borrow, or feel free to add something. For example maybe you need to shred some documents but don’t have a shredder you can ask the group if anyone has one to lend. Or maybe you have a working bee and need an extra wheelbarrow for the day, just ask. What are the rules? By joining a Buy Nothing Project group, you agree to abide by the Mission and Rules. Who can join this group? Buy Nothing Uraidla/Norton Summit/Montacute/Lenswood is for neighbours in Ashton, Basket Range, Carey Gully, Castambul, Cherryville, Forest Range, Greenhill, Lenswood, Montacute, Norton Summit, Summertown and Uraidla, SA. If you live here, we’d love to have you join us! You can join one group only, the group where you live so you can literally "give where you live." This is what builds community. In this group there is no buying or selling, no trades or bartering, no soliciting for cash. Want more info? Watch these back story videos to understand exactly how it all works https://buynothingproject.org/our-films/ How do I join? To join, click Join Group and answer the three membership questions. 09.01.2022 NAIDOC week messages from Uraidla Primary School students. Always was. Always will be. Take time today to reflect on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and living culture. ... Open conversations, explore the real history, listen to the environment and respect and celebrate our local Kaurna and Peramangk people. NAIDOC Week 2020 acknowledges and celebrates that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact whether in 1770 or 1606. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. 04.01.2022 Letting go of that little hand. The butterflies, the emotions and the anticipation of first day stories. Wishing all the hills children, kinder and school parents the best of luck on their first days. Big adventures are to come, you’re ready.

03.01.2022 As you pull off your socks and wriggle your toes in the grass be mindful of the Hopper Ant which is found in the Mt Lofty Region. A few locals have let us know they’ve been bitten so we thought it’s a timely reminder, especially if you’re new to the area. The ants have distinctive long jaws, as pictured and live in burrows in the ground. With each bite the allergic reaction can get worse (dizziness, breathlessness and itching).... If you need a referral for a local pest controller send us a message. Photo credit: Image 1: gardeningknowhow.com Image 2-4 https://www.naturalresources.sa.gov.au//amlr-native-ants-i

01.01.2022 Another day another view. This one is from @whissonlake vineyards overlooking @blefariwine vineyards. While we probably all crave a holiday or a trip to Tuscany sometimes when you look around it really does feel like a far away place that we call home. And soon the countdown to vintage gets nearer, a time where there’s a buzz in the air as grapes get picked and winemaking begins.... If you’re interested to know what the future of growing grapes in our district looks like and how you may like to prepare we recommend checking out an article featured in our last newsletter. Google Australia’s Wine Future University of Tasmania to access the facts and head to page 144 for details on our region. #careygully #adelaidehills #adelaidehillswine
