21.01.2022 Clothes don't just cover our nakedness and make us look good, they can send messages too....

19.01.2022 STYLES OF CQ COLUMN from Central Queensland Today Classic looks in neutral colours are taking centre stage in the column today. A classic style always looks appropriate, it’s a little more traditional with a timeless appeal. It usually features quality fabrics, often tailored basic pieces in solid (often neutral) colours. Our first classic style type is Casey Henderson from Mimco in Rockhampton who says that while she does enjoy a little bit of colour, she wears a lot of ...neutrals, especially black. Here she’s wearing a collared black shirt dress with pleated skirt details. A shirt dress like this is a very useful design, it’s comfortable without looking frumpy, and best of all is flattering on most people. Casey’s coordinated the look with a leopard print bag, and while it adds some interesting printed detail, it's also a classic design in itself. A pair of soft pink sneakers is a nod to current trends and helps to add a slightly more youthful edge while giving the dress a more casual feel. Casey’s hair pulled back into a sleek bun along with her minimal makeup and fine gold jewellery complete her outfit. Dawn Barker from Cooee Bay freely admits that she loves neutrals such as white, loves to dress in a classic style, and doesn’t follow fashion trends. Here she’s wearing a dark navy cotton tunic top over a pair of tailored white ankle length wide leg trousers. Both are great basic items and can be easily matched to other pieces. They are very easy and practical to wear on warm days. Dawn’s own flair comes in with her penchant for scarves, her signature look. Here, her navy and white scarf adds continuity to the navy and white colour palette and helps pulls the look together. She’s added lots of great silver jewellery which works beautifully with both navy and white and has added fun silver sandals to tone in. Neutrals like white, black, navy, brown, olive, taupe, beige and grey are great building blocks to any wardrobe, but they can also create minimalistic stylish looks like these that are both flattering, long lasting and smart. 19.01.2022 THIS WEEK'S STYLES OF CQ COLUMN - Every week I write a style column for the local weekly paper, CQToday which comes out every Thursday. I hope you enjoy this one! Last week I mentioned that here in Central Queensland we’re much more willing to embrace colour in our outfit choices. Perhaps it’s something to do with the vivid hues of nature that surround us or the bright sunlight that really calls for vibrant tones, but today’s column is all about colour. Judy Drake from Du...lulu has chosen to wear a striking shade of avocado green, which is one of the predicted colours that will be trending this coming Summer. It’s a very flattering shade on Judy which really brings out her green eyes but it’s also a soothing, calming pop of colour. Both the blouse and the skirt are in cool natural fibres and both include the current trend of ruffles! Judy describes her style as boho and this outfit is a perfect example, with it’s long flowing tiered skirt, cute gingham blouse and flat tan sandals. She’s continued the boho vibe by accessorising with multiple silver bangles, silver rings and an ethnic looking silver pendant. Renee Boak from Yeppoon was looking pretty in pink, choosing two different shades for her monochromatic look. There are many different tones of pink trending for Summer wear, and this combination of hot pink with a softer dusty pink is very fresh and pretty. Renee describes her style as modern classic, as she loves practical but well tailored clothing that’s sleek and simple. Her soft pink linen trousers are both stylish and cool to wear, but they are also a perfect colour for her and the matching makeup she’s worn is very flattering. Renee has emphasised her waist with a black belt and matched it to her practical but cute black sandals. She’s topped off the look with a relaxed straw handbag. Both these ladies have a great idea of the colours that suit them - can you say the same? 12.01.2022 COLOUR TALES - today, a colour that I thought was quite a modern one, but actually is old! Greige! It's a combination of beige and grey, very similar to taupe, but usually refers to a colour that's lighter than taupe. The word comes from French grège (raw (of silk)), from Italian (seta) greggia, raw (silk), from greggio (grey), ultimately from Germanic roots.... It's a word that dates back to the 19th century, used in the apparel trade to describe material in its raw state. So greige goods is a fabric in its natural colour prior to being dyed or printed. These days greige is really more a portmanteau of those two words, grey and beige, but it is a very versatile colour. It's been around in the fashion scene for a long time - in the 1980’s, Giorgio Armani was dubbed the king of greige, by Harper’s Bazaar, and decades later it's still popular. As Armani himself said I love natural colours including greige because they offer tranquillity and serenity, and are a base to play with as you desire. In colour psychology terms, as greige is a mix of grey (which is considered to be strong, steady and neutral) plus beige (which is considered to be calm and relaxing) then the colour gives off a warm feeling which is quite calming with feelings of security. It's a great colour for mixing with other shades, or can work beautifully as the basis for a monochromatic palette. Greige would best suit soft Summers and soft Autumns - the Summers should look for a greige with a little more grey than beige, and Autumns should look for a little more beige than grey! If you'd like to know if greige is for you, book yourself in for a colour analysis session.

10.01.2022 Many years ago, people were colour analysed into what's known as the seasonal system, that is, you were either a Summer, Winter, Spring or Autumn. Summer and Winter were the two 'cool' seasons and Spring and Autumn were the two 'warm' seasons. However these days things get more interesting with the addition of the tonal system, Bright, Light, Deep, Soft/Muted, Warm and Cool.... Did you know that if you are a Spring, you might be a Bright Spring, a Light Spring or a Warm Spring, depending on your dominant characteristics. In the same way, a Winter may be a Cool Winter, a Deep Winter or a Bright Winter. It's a fascinating system - if you'd like to know more about where you sit in either the tonal or the seasonal systems, give me a call!

05.01.2022 As you may know, I love to op shop, and I would say that 90 percent of my purchases come from thrifting. It not only saves me money, but I also love the thrill of the 'find'. If you've ever been op-shopping it can feel a bit overwhelming being faced with all the stock in front of you.... Fortunately most of these shops do categorise clothing items by size, but given that most of us can wear clothing that can vary by as much as a size up or down, you still have to check through a few size categories to be thorough. This is where knowing my best colours saves me so much time, because I can instantly discard those colours that I know are not in my palette and quickly move on. This may mean that sometimes you don't find anything in the right size and colour for you, but the next week you might find two or three things! The other thing I keep in mind when I'm buying a new item is to make sure that it will work with at least three other items in my wardrobe. This skirt is a good example. It's a skirt that has a print with lot of blue tones in it, as well as a little pink and purple and of course cream. So as you can see it goes with my dark blue top, my chambray top, my pink top and I have multiple cream coloured tops that it will work with also. Simple - and the best part? It cost me $2 in a Lifeline monthly sale, the item has a second life and a charity gets a donation.

04.01.2022 Until I started to study styling techniques, I didn't give much thought to accessories and how they can make or break an outfit. I thought they were nice things to have, but I didn't realize just how much of an impact they can make on your overall look. Today, let's tackle handbags! You don't just have to think about the colour, size and shape of a handbag, but also how long it's handles are!... First, choose a colour that is going to work in with your colour palette for maximum use. Second, choose a size appropriate for your frame. If you are very petite choose a smaller scale handbag. If you are very tall or plus size, you can get away with carrying a much bigger bag. Third, the shape also makes a difference. If you choose a wide bag, it will make you look shorter, so if you are petite look for one that is vertically longer. Round slouchy bags will add bulk to your frame, so if you want to appear sleeker, choose a bag that is more slimline and structured. Fourth, straps! Bags with longer straps are good on taller women, shorter women need shorter straps. Also think about where the bag sits on your body. If you have larger hips, make sure the bag doesn't sit at your hipline as it will add bulk. Similarly if you are an apple shape, have a longer strap so your bag sits around your hipline so not to add bulk to your bust or waist. Hope this helps - if you'd like more personal styling advice, contact me for a style consultation.

03.01.2022 It's not just for the colder months, you can have fun with dressing in one colour or shades of that colour through the Summertime too! Here are some ideas.
