25.01.2022 Nothing stops our swimming lessons unless you’re a butterfly.
24.01.2022 Are there any mums, dads, grannies, grandpas of our beautiful ELC who might be able to spare some time. The tuck shop is a constant source of lunch for our Educators.
24.01.2022 Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine to the mind. - Luther Burbank We couldn’t agree more. It’s wonderful to see how much happiness these Sunflowers have created for the Caterpillar children. They watched as they grew from a seed and finally they were able to display them outside the room. I’ve lost count of the number of children who’ve asked if I’ve seen THEIR sunflowers.
23.01.2022 Picture books allow educators to spend time discussing the story, pictures and words. This gives young readers confidence and allows them to talk about what they see on the page, what happened in the story, what the characters are doing and which events have unfolded. There is no one more attentive than Connie. Using picture clues to tell a story is early literacy. Did you notice that the books chosen all contain characters that are dogs. As one child said ‘Connie might like a story about a dog like her that talks’ Connie is made for this job, therapy dog. She went wandering and sat looking through the door wanting to be let in for more stories.
23.01.2022 We are so blessed to be part of this beautiful campus ,Immanuel Lutheran College. The Caterpillars are enjoying their library visit. Books are the best.
22.01.2022 Whiteboard tables are being introduced into progressive ELC’s all over the world. The movement towards writeable tables is driven by a desire to create spaces that enriches collaboration and empower visible thinking. We purchased them after feedback from the primary school and how it encouraged children to take risks with their learning. A mistake can easily be rectified so this encourages children to ‘have a go.’ We also ensured that all pens can be recycled. If you have any pens that are no longer usable please recycle them in the box in the foyer.
21.01.2022 Billy’s Buddies! It’s how you hold the ball. Under your arm, with one hand, two hands. It’s how you tread the ball into the ground and stop it! It’s how you run with the ball, dodging your opponent, weaving in and out, following the instructions of the coach. The skills our children have are amazing! Go team IELC.
18.01.2022 Always Was, Always Will Be. Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. We participated in activities to celebrate NAIDOC week 2020.
18.01.2022 Free to our community. Please RSVP to Karen or Tracey at the Early Learning Centre.
17.01.2022 We are celebrating Chinese New Year. Red pocket, red packet, red envelope... what does it mean? They contain money. The money in red envelopes is also known as (y suì qián). Literally, it is money to anchor the year(s). It is also known as lucky money or New Year’s money. By giving the money to children, elders are hoping to pass on a year of good fortune and blessings. Another version is given by the younger generation to their elders as a blessing of longevity and a show of gratitude. The Kindy children are making rubbings of the coins, cutting them out then creating their own red envelopes. Happy New Year!
16.01.2022 It doesn’t matter how busy the day gets as Service Leader of this wonderful centre I ensure I take time to be in the moment with the children as we share lunch together. Listening to their weekend plans, their favourite book. It’s just magical. Connies first day as our dog was even more special when she got to make a special new friend who also had his first day with us today. Think they both look like they are very settled at the ELC. Happy weekend everyone.
16.01.2022 I was lucky enough to be able to spend some time at Harry Hartog book store in the Sunshine Plaza today. Children learn to love the sound of language before they even notice the existence of printed words on a page. Reading books aloud to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. It helps them develop language and listening skills and prepares them to understand the written word. I purchased these four fabulous books to add to the catalogue of books we have outside of those we borrow from the library.
15.01.2022 An exciting new recycling experience is now happening for our ELC. Eco Club is making recycling easier at the College and has ongoing commitment to improve the ILC environmental footprint. Some of Caterpillars went down to check it out for themselves today and this will be embedded into their program. The grade 9 students took great care to share their knowledge with our children in a way they would understand.
15.01.2022 Today could not have got any better for our children in the Kindy and Caterpillar room. A real life Scuba Diver came to visit. This is Alexander ,one of our wonderful dads who shared his love of scuba diving with us. We have been learning all about the ocean and Alex gave us a real insight to how it feels to swim in the ocean and the equipment he needs to be able to do so. The most asked question...did you see a shark?
14.01.2022 Young children need to learn how to make friends and may still need help to develop friendship skills. Friendship skills learnt in early years include sharing, taking turns, cooperating and listening. How lucky are we at the ELC that we get to practice these skills by playing with our Year 3 Buddies. Every Friday we will get to come together and enjoy each other’s company. Certainly very blessed.
13.01.2022 Moving Moments (Our intergenerational learning program) is such a wonderful program and as huge as Covid19 is, it isn’t able to diminish the relationships that the children and seniors have formed.
13.01.2022 Staying connected. Two of our children in September left the centre to relocate to other areas. We promised to stay in touch and these both arrived today! Harry is in 1770 and Chance in Bundaberg. The children absolutely loved receiving these and hearing all about their adventures. Always connected at Immanuel!
12.01.2022 When working with young children, it’s important to create an understanding that all families have their own traditions, beliefs and cultures and we should treat each other with respect and dignity, regardless of where we come from or what we believe. At the ELC we are very lucky to have diverse team that can share with the children their cultures. Miss Kinnari made with the children in the Dragonfly room today a traditional meal from her homeland, India. The children enjoyed creating Bombay potatoes. They got the opportunity to explore new spices and vegetables. The smell was so wonderful. What made it very special, Miss Kinnari also created an Indian Feast for the educators to enjoy at lunch time. We are very blessed.
12.01.2022 Uno cards are a great numeracy learning tool for all ages. From early learners who are just starting with number recognition, right up to older children who are working on more difficult concepts. The clearly numbered Uno cards make it easy to use for lots of hands on numeracy learning activities. Many education theorists (Dulay & Burt, 1977; Krashen, 1982) have proposed that children retain what they learn when the learning is associated with strong positive emotion. So simply put, have fun while learning.
11.01.2022 Just checking, are you OK? We ask the children every day. As Service Leader I wanted just check that the Educators were doing OK.
11.01.2022 Our wonderful educators have created a great holiday program and we have very happy, joyous children. We also have the beautiful Connie with us most days and that means lots of hugs to who ever needs them. Don’t you love her new backpack. Officially part of the Immanuel family.
11.01.2022 It’s science week. Global warming explained in a very simple way for the Caterpillars today. The iceberg was heated up using a hairdryer to simulate warm air. This in turn melted the ice which led to more water (rising sea levels) Watching this for themselves made it very clear that the planet needs our help and our actions matter. We need to care for planet Earth.
10.01.2022 We love our community! The joy when you get to see your brother! Having a chat through the window.
10.01.2022 Please can I go to my friends? Connie got her offical name badge today. One of the children asked if she was a teacher today. I replied she certainly is. She is teaching us all so much. There are not enough words to explain the difference this girl is bringing to our Centre for both children and adults. We are so,so blessed.
10.01.2022 Recycling. The Butterflies have been collecting empty milk cartons to make their own flower pots, and scoopers. Marigolds keep the insects away from the veggies and add the colour that the children want in their garden. Totally independent. Capable learners.
10.01.2022 It is my privilege to be the Service Leader of such an amazing Early Learning Centre. Today Early Childhood Educators Day gave me the opportunity to thank the wonderful team at the ELC. Their devotion to the children is second to none. Each and every one of them gives that little extra every day. They have patience, creativity, enthusiasm and above all and absolute love of early childhood development. We are a very blessed community.
09.01.2022 When you get to push the button that starts the sirens.Look at the smile! The Butterfly room have been looking at community and thanks to one of our wonderful dads they got to look at a real police car and learn all about being a police officer.
09.01.2022 We are very proud that we have such a diverse team. We have Educators from Australia, New Zealand,Malaysia, China ,India and the United Kingdom. This allows us to embed diversity into our program. When children learn diversity they learn about their own backgrounds. The backgrounds of people who are different from them. They see themselves, their families, and their communities represented throughout the centre. They are continually exposed to activities, materials, and concrete experiences that destroy stereotypes. They have an acceptance of difference. Today Kindy had so much fun as Miss Kinnari shared her Indian culture. She taught them how to dance to Indian music, wearing beautiful Sari’s. The Educators got to dress up to!
09.01.2022 The release of serotonin (happy hormone) that occurs when playing in dirt has also been shown to improve cognitive function. The rich, engaging sensory play children partake in while playing with mud allows them to express their creativity while enhancing their fine motor skills. When it’s your first day, could you look any happier?
08.01.2022 How to learn numbers. Read books there are plenty of books that support number learning, eg The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Ten Black Dots. Play board/card games any game that involves rolling dice and counting spaces (eg snakes and ladders, ludo) will help children learn their numbers. How about adding one more? Make sand balls and keep adding one.
08.01.2022 Immanuel Early Learning Centre has talent.
08.01.2022 This started as incidental lunch together last week and has now become a regular get together. Miss Tracey and seven children share lunch together in the foyer. Our busy lifestyle can make eating together a real challenge, but it’s worth it. There are nutrition, health, social, and mental benefits to eating with others. Together we take turns in sharing our day, we talk about our lunches. The children now know Miss Tracey loves rainbow colours in her lunch. We chatted about what makes us happy. Special times with special children.
07.01.2022 Imaginative play is essentially when children are role playing and are acting out various experiences they may have had or something that is of some interest to them. They are experimenting with decision making on how to behave and are also practising their social skills. Creating a pirate ship together!
07.01.2022 Pancake Day is also known around the world as Shrove Tuesday. It falls on the day before Ash Wednesday each year, the first day of Lent. Joy, one of our VIPs from the Moving Moments programme made the newspaper many years ago for her excellent pancake making skills and today she has been teaching our children how to toss a pancake!
05.01.2022 There’s no ‘right’ way to play with a cardboard box, so we let children decide what they want it to be. The humble cardboard box is a great example of an asensory environment. The brown color suggests nothing in particular. The smooth sides imply little. The cube structure defines empty space. The subtle smell lacks distraction. The sound of the cardboard folding is muted and music-less. This very lack of sensory inputs (or perhaps, more accurately, the subtle nature of these sensory inputs) is an essential contrast to the more powerful and deliberate stimulation we traditionally think of when we talk about sensory play. Today these boxes were, houses, towers, boats, hats, a mat for the slide. Who doesn’t love a box?
05.01.2022 I am so excited to be able to finally share with you that Connie will not only be working with the children at the ELC but the College to. The documents are signed and together we officially own Connie. The difference that Connie has already made to our children is quite remarkable. Welcome to the Immanuel Community Connie, you will be very loved by many.
04.01.2022 With so many of our children visiting Rainbow Beach we thought we would investigate coloured sand. We all learn something new every day and the Caterpillars taught Miss Tracey that there is a real pink beach in Bermuda.
04.01.2022 Some of our families have told us about the ‘Spoonville’ Face Book page. Originating from the English village of Winnersh the Spoonville fad has spread across Australia, especially Melbourne. Children and adults now all over the world are creating wooden spoon communities. Together with our VIPs from Moving Moments ( Intergenerational Learning program) we have began to build our own Spoonville community which is located in the area outside the foyer. Watch this space! If you would like to add your character please feel free to do so. We would love our Spoonville community to grow!
03.01.2022 Wishing all our past and present dads a very special day.
03.01.2022 We absolutely love our community! The Class of 2020 were farewelled by fellow students, staff and parents at the Walk of Faith. What a year it has been for them so is more important than ever that we were there to clap very loudly. We wish them all the best as they go and chase their dreams.
03.01.2022 Just posting this tonight because it’s impossible to not look at those faces and smile. The joy of childhood.
03.01.2022 Pirates Day! Making maps, finding gold nuggets, stroking Connie gently with your hook. A day in the life of a pirate!
02.01.2022 Intergenerational learning via Zoom. Both the children and VIPs had a parachute! This play encourages a variety of different skills. By coordinating the parachute together, the children learn about cooperative play. Visual perception is strengthened and challenged, allowing them to improve their ability to process and mentally organise visual information. Then it was an egg and spoon race and a sack race! So much fun. We may not be physically together but we certainly laugh and have fun together!
01.01.2022 School holiday fun. I know we say it so often but we are so blessed to be part of a wonderful campus. Scooter /bike day. The children have huge imput to the program and this is a request every single holiday. A big walk around campus finding natural objects to make a picture or going to the Prep playground, all make for a terrific Tuesday!
01.01.2022 The importance of retelling stories is that it allows children to learn to organise and describe events. Retelling stories helps them begin to understand sequence, and characterisation as they build vocabulary and comprehension skills. The Kindy children are retelling the Christmas story.
01.01.2022 Self-esteem is feeling good about yourself. Good self-esteem helps children try new things, take healthy risks and solve problems. It gives them a solid foundation for their learning and development.Look at all this self -esteem on display. Singing your heart out, dancing, playing the guitar. Love these moments.
