23.01.2022 INHALE... EXHALE... Not all deep breathing is the same. In the first half of this video, the 'deep' breaths are focused into the upper chest and shoulders, resulting in a shallow breath, with use of the neck and shoulder muscles. This type of breathing is very common when we are stressed or anxious. In the second half of the video, the hand placement shows that the breath is focused at the lower rib cage level, expanding the ribs, filling the lower lobes of the lungs a...nd resulting in a very gentle stretch to the rib joints and muscles. Good quality deep breathing should keep the head, neck and shoulders relaxed and feel like your ribs are inflating like a balloon when you breathe in and deflating when you breathe out. Try this technique in front of a mirror, using your hands as a guide to focus your breath into your lateral ribs. Of course incidental exercise is important-dancing with your kids, taking the dog for a walk, going up and down the stairs at work, but so does dedicated time for YOU.... 05.01.2022 LATERAL HIP PAIN? WHAT NOT TO DO... Lateral hip pain can (literally) be a pain in the bum! There may be some things that you are doing that are aggravating your pain, without you even know it! You see, tendons like to be loaded, but aren't big fans of being compressed.... The gluteal tendon is compressed if we lie on the same side as the pain or if that leg crosses the midline of our body (such as when we sit with our legs crossed, sleep with our sore leg draped across the other leg, even when performing some common gluteal strengthening and stretching exercises!). So, some quick and easy ways to try to reduce gluteal tendon irritation... Avoid sitting cross legged Sleep on the unaffected side with a pillow between your knees, to keep the legs in a more neutral position Avoid gluteal stretches which involve the leg being pulled across the body Avoid glut strengthening exercises where the leg starts in an adducted ( turned inward) position You may not have to avoid the above long term... 02.01.2022 RETURN TO PRE COVID-19 SPORTS AND EXERCISE We are right on board with the excitement of being able to return to some of our Pre Covid-19 forms of fitness and exercise, however, to avoid undue stress and injury to your body, we'd recommend: Allow 24-28 hours between sessions of similar exercises, this gives your tendons time to recover and be ready to go again!... If you're recovering from an injury, aim to have less than 4/10 pain during the session and no pain that night or the next morning Speak to your trainer or physio about adjusting your routine to accommodate injuries Work back up gradually to your Pre covid-19 weights/sets and reps Aim for a decent night's rest and proper hydration and nutrition For overall general health aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily and two to three sessions weekly of strength and conditioning Happy exercising!
