04.01.2022 DUFFS FISHING REPORT 18.9.20 ESTUARY Jewfish are still chewing on baits in the Bay, Peter Silcock fishing with Shane The Butcher from Stroud nailed a metre pl...us model on a soft plastic around Allworth in less than a metre of water around the racks, big fish in shallow water fight hard. Some other keys jewfish spots are the Western side of Middle Island, The Entrance to Fame Cove, Tea Garden Bridge and the main Breakwall at Nelson Bay. The end of Sally Shores Wharf can also be worth a live bait. Young Maddie fishing the sand flats with dad Chris at Corlette with beach worms is starting to catch sand whiting, as the weather warms around November the whiting will start to gather at the entrance to the Port, great time to fish Shoal Bay Beach, The Short-Cut and Jimmies Beach with nippers or worms. Looking for somewhere to take the kids fishing this weekend: https://www.salamanderbaittackle.com.au/port-stephens-4-to/ or pop-in the store for a free flyer with all the kid friendly spot, species and baits to use. Be sure to pick-up a free flyer with great information for you and the kids. Yabbies' (Nippers) great fun for the kids to catch, Roywood Reserve on low tide is the way to go. It’s recommended you combine the yabbie with a bait-keeper/holder style hook which will help hold the bait on more naturally. The Nelson Bay Break wall still remains the place to fish with bread & butter species bream and blackfish the targets. Some of the bream have started to spawn which will make the fish thin & the fillets soft and watery. There are a lot of smaller fish being caught. From the reports I’m receiving I’d say the next 4 weeks will most likely see the bream out. For bream fish outside the change of tide or on the inside in and around the Marine Rescue Boat or from the wharf in and around the fish traps, early morning and afternoon, berley heavy on the inside to hold the fish. Bream are a scavenger feeder and will take a wide variety of baits and lures. Some other key spots in the Bay for bream are the Anchorage break-wall, any of the wharfs, Wanda Headland, the short-cut, piggy’s rock wall just to name a few. Bream from the main Breakwall on prawn and or fish bait. Best method for bream 00 running ball sinker onto a 1/0 or 2/0 Mustad Penetrator hook and let the fish take the bait and swim away before striking. Use the bait runner feature on your reel or if not then perhaps consider opening the bail arm to let line peel off freely. Fish at the end of the wall. If fishing night and early morning then berley with chicken pellets or similar for best results. The blackfish have been sensitive all season although the reports I’m getting this week were good fish to 40cm mostly cabbage baits from the main Breakwall, although you need to be prepared to work for your fish. They are beginning to spawn with the odd thin one in the mix. As they continue to spawn the fish will also become thin, I’m thinking 4 to 6 weeks will see them out for this year also as they move back into the upper reaches of the Estuary system. Interestingly enough guys are reporting multiple catches of black fish from Fingal Bay Beach on yabbie baits. When they are sensitive like this make the effort & adapt your fishing for better results, try a 5lb-6lb FC leader & lighter floats for more ‘downs.’ Reports of fish from the inside near Simba on weed baits. The key spots are the main Breakwall and Anchorage inside wall near the pipe. Fish 1 hour each side of the tide, heaps of rich berley with each cast, let that float hold under for a few seconds before striking which will increase your hook-up rate. For more information check out; https://www.salamanderbaittackle.com.au/how-to-catch-luder/ For those interested in chasing a squid or two check-out this week’s Examiner: https://www.portstephensexaminer.com.au//steady-drop-in-/ Reports of squid in around the moored boats at Shoal Bay also I’ve had reports of squid from Sally Shores Wharf. For those interested in chasing squid I’m often asked what colour to use, I’m no squid expert but the guys from Yamashita are, to explain check-out; https://www.salamanderbaittackle.com.au/yamashita-squid-ji/ Reports of blue swimmers being taken Western Side of One Tree Island, Mud Crabs this week are chewing mullet baits around Upton’s Island in Tilligerry Creek & North Arm Cove. Handmade crab traps in-store now. BEACH Young Will Zoneff fishing Birbui Beach this week has been doing well on the bream, Will says early morning is the way to go, pick a nice gutter and flick in a worm. He is also a fan of catch n release, great work mate. Gavin reports thick salmon to 60cm (3.5kg) off Fingal Bay, rubbish to eat but great fun on metals for a bit of sport. Reports of black fish being taken off Fingal Bay on yabbies'', not usual although it does happen. Different way to catch them. Old Schoey getting some nice beach worms this week around 2km mark. Some solid bream being taken from the Birbui end of Stockton Beach on pipi and worm baits around 3km-4km mark. Fish around 35-38cm. Bream on live yabbie baits near the Spit at Fingal. I like fishing early morning and or late afternoon and into the night. Although, if the days remain overcast then fishing during the day will be defiantly worth a try. https://www.salamanderbaittackle.com.au/catching-bream-fro/ Ocean Rocks Drummer to 2.5kg around Fisherman’s Bay on prawn baits, the key is to find some good wash and berley heavy with bread, floating that prawn down the water column & hang on! Pete also reported a heap of silver drummer around, not so great to eat although fun to catch. Good by-catch of bream and tarwhine. Reports of blackfish from Birbui Point & Boats Harbour on cabbage baits. John K also doing well with the pigs around Barry Park. Reports groper from Fingal Island to 3kg, you can cross Fingal Spit under correct conditions, be sure to check, tide & sea conditions. Mitch reports reds to 65cm from the Island this week on floating pillies. The Island makes for great snapper rock fishing. The Grit Hole is a great spot for bream with drummer being caught around the island as well. Some nice snapper to 60cm have been reported from Barry Park. Boulder Bay producing bream and green-eyed squid. Although, they are a lot of sharks. I have also had reports of Fish with small metals around Morna Point for tailor and salmon. Reports of Blackfish from Fisherman’s Bay and Boat Harbour. OUTSIDE Outside conditions for Saturday and Sunday mornings; https://www.willyweather.com.au/nsw/hunter/anna-bay.html Reports to reds to 60cm being taken from the Outer Light on floating fish baits. Big Tommy Reef producing reds. When the weather settles try Big and Little Island in the washes from bream, reds & drummer. Work in and around Broughton Island try Cod Rock, Jim’s Leap and the Sisters for reds on first light. Float fish baits and or squid down into the berley trail for best results. North Rock producing small kings and reds on the East side. The Little Gibber producing tailor on metals and solid drummer on prawn baits in the washes. Flathead be taken at the 40m mark on the drift with fish baits. Salted mullet fillet, stripped works well here. If you’re looking for reef locations pop-in and get the GPS marks for free.
