25.01.2022 At The Villages Lodge Christmas Island we have 2 types of boats at our disposal. The "traditional " outrigger canoe is mainly used for inside the lagoon. Equipped with 4 stroke engines,these rigs are extremely comfortable and spacious allowing for up to 6 anglers to spend their day fishing the flats in comfort. The second type is a larger fibreglass sportfishing rig which is mainly used for fishing outside the lagoon for tuna,wahoo,and billfish. Also fitted with 4 stroke engi...nes and comfortably accomodating 4 anglers for a day on the blue water. All of our boats are equipped with back to base radios,life jackets and extra fuel reserves. Safety is paramount at The Villages. In over 14 yrs. we have never had a major incident. 24.01.2022 There is more to Christmas Island than just bonefish,yet bones are the main attraction and rightly so. Amongst other targets,one of the best would be Yellowfin Tuna. You need to travel outside of the lagoon to chase these awesome fish,The Villages Christmas Island has the right boats and the right guides to get you connected to one of these world class fish on either fly or conventional.I've seen Yellowfin up to 50 kg. busting only a few hundred metres from the lagoon entranc...e yet fish of around 10kg-20kg are the most common size we target. Your gear needs to be good quality as these fish will put a massive strain on rods,reels,flylines,Tippett and hooks,make sure you are saddled up with the right stuff. If not you will be in for a world of pain.Minimum #11 wt rods, saltwater dedicated reels that have a good,smooth,reliable drag plus backing capacity for at least a few hundred metres,preferably intermediate lines although floater will work at a pinch,a minimum of 10 kg of quality,premium fluorocarbon Tippett,strong saltwater hooks and of course good knots. Flies can vary from standard candies to larger baitfish profiles. Fly size of around 2/0--4/0 will do the job. There is nothing better than casting to these rigs,getting the eat and watching backing literally melting from the reel. And of course,fresh Sashimi is always welcome. 21.01.2022 The "Korean Wreck " area of Christmas Island is a bit of an enigma. There used to be the rusty remnant of an old Korean ship washed up on the reef down there ,hence its name. The old wreck has disappeared to the elements,so these days the Korean Wreck basically refers to the general area. Some days down there can be a bit hit and miss however get there at the right time and it's epic, and brutal,both on gear and anglers. The right tides are vital !! Big bones,Geets,Triggers,S...weetlips, Barracouda,Bluefin Trev and a few other bits and pieces thrown in,the variety down there is terrific,expect anything to come into play,and everything that does come along fight like they are on steroids.It can be like a punch up in a phone booth.Being prepared is paramount,it's a two hour drive back to The Villages if you forgot anything. Bones and Triggs- because of the terrain a stout #7 wt or preferably and #8 wt. Beef your leaders up to 20lb. Because of the constant wash across the reef flats caused by the ocean swells hitting the outer reef,the ever present suds and turbulence on the flats tends to make the fish not very leader shy. Geets and other stuff,minimum #12 Wt would be my choice,sometimes that isn't enough. Don't worry about taking 3 rods for the day,the one on one guiding at The Villages means your guide will carry all extra rods etc. for you.Check out the "fish highways" in these pics coming to and from the flats!! Geets will head straight for these once hooked. Plenty of flylines have been lost ,worst count between a group of 6 one day was 4 flylines down by the end of the day. 21.01.2022 There are quite a few different patterns that work on CXI bones,yet if I had to choose just one then this would be it. Good mate Jason Borg introduced me to this colour a few years back and consequently myself and others have fished it over a couple of years with great success. Not only is it a good one for CXI but Jason has had great success with it in Maldives as well. For some reason it seems to pull the fish when nothing else does,especially on those days when they are be...ing super fussy. These days it's the first one to get tied on and on most occasions doesn't get changed all day. Don't ask me why it is so effective,it just is for some reason. 21.01.2022 Part of our ongoing commitment to The Villages Lodge Christmas Island is to recruit new guides. Every couple of years management select around 12 young men from the adjoining village of Tabwakea as potential candidates. Once selected,Nial Logan spends time with them going through some basics and also gives them some pretty extensive casting tuition. After this first process,Nial narrows it down to about 6 or so possibilities,after which I take each one individually out into t...he lagoon to fish. Every one of them can spot fish,it's almost in their DNA.Amongst other skills required,a strong desire and motivation is very important. You can teach them skills required and they can learn on their journey to become a full time guide however desire and motivation comes from within,if the latter two attributes aren't apparent then they aren't suitable for the position.After a further selection process we make our recommendations to the management,after which 2 or 3 begin a lengthy apprenticeship under the watchful eye of Bob our head guide. We began this programme after the passing of several senior guides ,realising the loss of these legends and their intimate knowledge needs to be addressed by bringing new young guides through the system. 18.01.2022 For most,a trip to The Villages Christmas Island is a trip of a lifetime,organising time off,saving $$ to make it happen. Generally at least 12 months planning goes into it. One of the best tips I can pass on is don't scrimp when it comes to footwear. You'll be spending around 8 hrs. a day wading different environments from sand to coral and everything in between during the week.Nothing worse than having inferior footware,if you don't it really can spoil your trip. There are ...plenty of good brands out there when it comes to wading boots,get salt water specific ones and it's just one less thing to worry about. They'll last for years,the ones pictured had spent a total of 5 weeks in service before they were given to one of the guides who wore them every day for nearly a year. 12.01.2022 When it comes to bonefishing,I'm a % advocate for keeping it all simple. No need to overthink it all,it will do your head in and have you second guessing it all when that tank bone comes into range. For me one of the best places to start in keeping it all simple is leaders. Plenty of anglers construct there own,and that's all good. For me,I prefer to use a pre made tapered leader like the one pictured,generally in 20lb. They come in at around 10 ft long. The key with these i...s to cut about 2-3 ft. off the FRONT end and then add to it a few ft. of your favourite tippett material in your chosen breaking strain,I recommend fluorocarbon. So basically you now have a leader that turns over well,even in the wind and has minimal number of knots. A few of these will do you for a weeks fishing and can be easily and readily changed out quickly. 12.01.2022 Bit of an update. Have been in conversation today with Tekamaeu,the manager at The Villages Christmas Island. Naturally they can't wait to welcome us all back and as of date there are NO reported cases of COVID-19 on Christmas Island and for that matter all of Kiribati. Despite the loss of income generated by visiting fishermen,they are all eternally grateful and thankful that they are safe. Kiribati was one of the first countries to close boarders ,in fact they did this in early February. Staff at the Villages pass on their best wishes to all of our clients and to all Australians and look forward to the day we once again return. Rest assured it will be all systems go when the time eventually comes. In the meantime keep dreaming of those clear,Sandy flats and the bones that swim there

09.01.2022 No words,just dreams. There will be a time to return. As of date no infections recorded in Kiribati. They were quick to close their borders and in hindsight it was a good move to jump early. Damm those fish are going to be stupid hungry when we can return.

09.01.2022 Referred to as " the back country", this area of the lagoon is a maze of channels,edges and flats. It usually involves a lot of walking,in fact if you time the tides you can cover a ton of territory over the course of the day. Quality guides like those working at The Villages Christmas Island are invaluable in extracting the best from this complicated part of the lagoon. However it's definitely worth the effort to take the walk as the bones ,although spooky,are of larger proportions than in most other places. 04.01.2022 As you can see by this map of the flats,The Villages is brilliantly positioned.You can walk out of your room,jump on the boat and be wading a flat in under 15 minutes. Canada,April and Ricks are outstanding on their day,as all the flats in the lagoon are. The Villages faces the lagoon making the views spectacular.
