18.01.2022 Justine is a 48-year-old Ugandan wife, mother and farmer who takes care of four grandchildren. Poor weather conditions and dry spells badly affected Justine's maize yield last year, and instead of producing the expected 20 bags of maize, she could only harvest five. BUT, through the SHE-supported Agri-Business and Community Development (ABCD) project, and funding from the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's Australian NGO Cooperation Program (...ANCP), Justine was able to attend a series of training on improved farming practices. After this training, Justine received an agricultural loan, to plant hybrid maize using organic fertiliser. Justine was also able to establish a banana plantation and grow beans one of the recommended farming practices she learned about through the project. Justine was able to repay her loan within six months through hard work! With a new loan, Justine planted one acre of hybrid maize, which is looking very promising. She is expecting to harvest 20 bags soon. Because of SHE, Justine now has several income sources which have improved her family’s ability to afford basic needs, as well as support her grandchildren to stay in school. 15.01.2022 Seventeen-year-old Yorxorme is a grade eight student from Ghana. Coming from a large family of 10 children, Yorxorme’s mother was unable to provide enough food for her children, particularly after the death of Yorxorme’s father. Living in a rural community where the predominant occupation is farming, many families struggle to earn a living, and many children have to work instead of attend school. ... But, when International Needs Ghana, which receives funding from INA and ChildLink supporters, set up a school in her community, Yorxorme’s mother jumped at the opportunity and enrolled her daughter in the school. Since 2007, Yorxorme has been receiving ChildLink support to attend school. INA’s ChildLink program does more than provide children with education; ChildLink provides clean water and one hot meal per day for enrolled students, helps families in generating and managing income, and offers community support services such as counselling. Yorxorme is very grateful to International Needs Ghana and the ChildLink program. I am able to read and write today because of International Needs and with their support I am encouraged to study hard to achieve my dreams.’’ One day, she hopes to become one of the best seamstresses in her community.
