25.01.2022 Ankle brace vs taping - which is better? Research has shown that both ankle braces & taping are effective at reducing injury risk and severity but here are 3 C’s to consider: 1. Comfort - Do you feel secure? Are you unaware that you are wearing it? 2. Compliance - which will you commit to wearing every game & at trainings too? Both are only effective if you are wearing them. When taping can you apply it yourself or will you have someone who can apply it for you? 3. Cost - ta...ping can be cheaper short term but depending on how much sport you play braces win out in the longer term. If you would like assistance in making the right decision for you please give us a call on 6334 4766 to make an appointment with one of our Physiotherapists. See more

24.01.2022 Return to competition - tips for coaches, clubs & athletes. Injuries happen. We can never 100% prevent injuries. When they occur it is so important to have all the necessary supports around you.... Consider the following areas: Physical - rehabilitation should be more about what you can be doing rather than what you arent allowed to do yet. Your Physio can help give you clear guidelines. Mental - as a coach, find ways to include your injured athletes into trainings and competition. Help them continue to improve their game by learning more about the sport & seeing it from a different perspective. Emotional - a burden shared is a burden halved. Check in regularly on your injured athletes. If you feel out of your depth talk to your club or get in contact with us and we can point you in the right direction of some excellent professional services. https://www.nba.com/article/2019/06/10/durant-reinjures-calf

22.01.2022 Return to competition - tips for coaches, clubs & athletes. Fatigue management. Injuries can be more common towards the end of a half as well as the end of the game.... With most athletes having reduced match fitness leading to the post-COVID season return coaches should consider more frequent rotations to keep your players fresh.

20.01.2022 Return to competition - tips for coaches, clubs & athletes. Do you know your athletes injury history? Athletes with previous injuries can be 4 to 7 times more likely of recurrent injury.... As a coach it is important to know your athletes injury history so you can incorporate appropriate exercises and drills into individual as well as team practices. If you need any specific ideas do not hesitate to get in touch with us!
20.01.2022 Return to competition - tips for coaches, clubs & athletes. Overuse injuries. A systematic review from 2016 revealed that:... Fitness levels and recovery are assumed to be the most important factors in relation to overuse injuries. Tendinopathies (a form of overuse injury affecting tendons) peaked during the first few months of the season in youth athletes. With the shortened mid-season pre-season for most sports it may be unrealistic to be at full match fitness for round one (or even round two or three!). You want to challenge your athletes but pace training loads to ensure your team is reaching peak performance at the right time. Smart, planned training can prevent overuse injuries popping up during the season that could hinder your team reaching their goals for the season.
20.01.2022 Today is the start of Stroke awareness week. In his blog NDIS Physio Dan Justice discusses some of the issues during recovery. Currently, around 56,000 Australians have a stroke each year; more than 100 every day. The rates of people dying from stroke have dropped significantly over the last 30 years, however still around 10,600 Australians die of stroke each year (credit -brain foundation)

14.01.2022 Return to competition - tips for coaches, clubs & athletes. Injuries occur at training, not only in games. Research studies report a wide variability of injury frequency during training compared to competition - anywhere between 5-45%.... Youth athletes in particular can: have higher incidences of injury during training than professional adults of the same sport. be at higher risk of training overload injuries. However injuries sustained during games: Are typically more severe. Lead to longer recovery time. Concussions are more common. What can coaches do to help reduce injury rates: Ensure good warm ups and pre-season conditioning. Incorporate neuromuscular control exercises. Enforce taping or bracing at training if athletes use these during competition (*for young athletes in particular a review with a Physiotherapist can be beneficial to ensure taping and bracing is actually appropriate long term). Incorporate high-risk situations into controlled practice conditions to teach the necessary skills (i.e. tackling, heading a soccer ball etc) Prevention is key! Re-injuries lead to even longer rehabilitation times.

13.01.2022 *WARNING GRAPHIC VIDEO * Pain is often not a very accurate measure of how much damage is present in our body. This does not mean, you ignore the pain that you are experiencing, or that the pain is in your head. All pain is real 100% of the time and extremely personal to the individual who is experiencing it. Take the case of US basketball star Kevin Ware pictured below in 2013.... "I saw the bone six inches out. I didn’t feel any pain. It didn’t hurt. Honestly, it didn’t hurt. It was just scary. It was probably one of the scariest moments in my life. Kevin Ware This is one of the topics we will explore in our Tame Your Pain groups at In-Balance.
