17.01.2022 Friday Design Talk! Line can be in various forms ranging from vertical to horizontal and everything in between. The use of line is integral to the interpretation of a space. Line/s can not only can create movement and evoke emotion but also alter state of mind by means of using direction and quality. Horizontal lines have a relationship with the ground and are generally quite grounding and restful.... Vertical lines offer that enlightened feeling of spirituality and growth. 15.01.2022 Space is the three dimensional element of length, width and height. Space can be negative (open/empty) or positive (containing physical elements) dependent on the outcome you are trying to achieve within a design. Certain elements and objects can alter the space and how it functions.... For an example, a taller and wider entry door (first image shown) can create the feeling of height and grandness while the use of the large furniture in a room can have the opposite effect and have the space feel smaller than it physically is. The use of low lying furniture combined with the round coffee table and neutral patterned floor rug (second image shown) promotes the living area to be experienced as a large yet inviting space connected to the rest of the home. Form can be can be created on its own or with multiple shapes, textures, patterns, colours and lines to enhance the form. There are two types which are geometric (man-made) and natural (organic), form can be positive or negative and once understanding of space and line has been established, a form will be achieved. In the example images, the solid cube, rigid forms featured on these facades have a strong impact to the end user by enforcing grand large scale shapes and solidifying the form of the building to the ground while the use of softer organic form creates a sense of peace and tranquility with uninterrupted movement.
