12.01.2022 There is a significant difference between Auslan and Key Word Sign. Auslan is a language in its’ own right that is distinct from English. It was recognised as a "community language other than English" by the Australian government in 1987. It is not a gestured version of English as there is no mapping of signs to words. Instead it has its’ own grammar and vocabulary. Like other sign languages, it does not have a written form. The Deaf community report a lack of awareness regar...ding the importance of teaching Auslan as a language to deaf students. Even when a student has a cochlear implant they may not have access to all the sounds of the English language and consequently this denies access to communication. However, if Auslan is taught from birth, students will have access to a complete language. Key Word Sign, previously known as Makaton, differs from Auslan in that it is utilised with students who have difficulties with expressive and receptive language rather than those with hearing loss. It is a basic communication system and not a language. Key word sign uses signs from Auslan and natural gestures to accompany words in the message that contain the most information. It is a form of AAC.
