24.01.2022 Summer sailing school fun!

16.01.2022 A great short video which provides an insight into the Optimist dinghy. A keen eye might see IHYC sailor Aidan (1732) at the front of the fleet in a couple of shots.

14.01.2022 IHYC Recreational Sailing Activity Please note the early start time so we can enjoy early morning and avoid the afternoon chaos at this time of year. When: Sunday 17 January 2021, rigged and ready to sail by 8:15am, briefing + coffee orders at 8:00 am. Please let me know by Saturday afternoon if you are joining us ([email protected] or 0407 972 290).... What to Bring: Usual equipment for a sail + snacks/drinks for brunch. What: A reasonably short sail with longer trips planned later in the year. We will sail to a channel marker [see map above GPS coords -38.12816540073323, 144.7371478340159, approximately 2.5 nm N56 degrees E from the club house] and return to the club house a group navigational challenge! Other shore locations are being avoided until the holiday crowds subside. Restrictions: The effective limit on numbers is our capacity to provide on and off water support. If conditions are not appropriate/unsafe we will not sail. Who: Indented Head Yacht Club members. Support: Volunteers please for set up, Ozone/RIBs and base communications. I will do the coffee run and assist on a support boat. Graham [Recreational Sailing Coordinator]

10.01.2022 Recreational Sailing Sunday 17 January Fortunately Sunday morning brought much kinder conditions than Saturday’s strong and gusty winds which saw chatting on the shore line taking preference over venturing onto the water. Many thanks to Andrew for setup and driving the RIB, Peter for being his usual helpful self and Tim (and daughter), Toby (and his 2 daughters) and Ross and daughter Kate for coming along and helping to make it an enjoyable day.... Ross and Kate sailed a classic Mirror. There is something special about a Gunter rig and wood spars. Toby and his daughters sailed their 125 with some first-time trapeze work (I have found memories of my first time on the wire and my cousin yelling keep your rear leg bent when hitting some chop in our Cherub. Good advice!). Tim and his daughter on the Quest made use of a reef in the main sail and had good words to say about the stability of the boat. Peter in his Sabre lead the pack on our makeshift, round the markers course. Wildlife sightings included a very large stingray hovering along the beach (no swimmers fortunately) and a cormorant who bit off more than they could chew (swallow).

06.01.2022 RACE REPORT 23 January 2021 The forecast for Saturday was 10-15 kn and a temperature of high twenties and we had a turn-out of fourteen boats split fairly evenly between division 1 and division 2. Division 2 featured Sabres of Andrew, Tony, Geoff and Rob Ballard and 4.7 Lasers sailed by Nate, Robbie and in his first sail out of the Opti, Finn Fairlie. Finn did well and was right up with the fleet including the Tasar which struggled to get past him. Unfortunately he tipped and... then had tiller problems so was unable to complete the race, nor the second. In race 1 Div 2 Andrew was a minute and a half up on Nate in a 4.7. They were followed by Tony a minute back on Nate with Robbie Bux in the newly renamed Stingray a mere 13 seconds behind. Abigail was next in with Rob Ballard the last home. Half of Div 2 finishers retired for the second race as the breeze gusted to 15 kn and threatened more and it was left to the Sabres of Andrew (39.07), Tony (42.11) and Geoff (43.23) to battle it out. Division 1 had Lasers of Peter C, Peter E, Dave Kershaw, the Solo Swift sailed by Graham, the Tasar committee with Terry and Leon on Impulses. The time keeper is pretty sure that Graham on the Solo Swift was first over the line (but was distracted by a grand-child) and then it was the Leon/Peter C demonstration day as they battled away through both races. In race 1 Peter was three seconds ahead of Leon on the line. Peter E was a minute back followed by Dave about a minute further back. Terry was next and a disappointing 4 minutes later the Tasar committee made it over the line having had a very sad sail with the wind always in the wrong direction and the sails not quite working; we may have to amend our latest theory. The Leon/Peter C battle re-commenced in race 2 with all others retiring. Leon reversed the score finishing 41 seconds up on Peter. Garry Venn did a great job as officer of the day assisted by Peter Viney with Glenn Terry on the RIB. Anne was in the tower, mostly paying attention, and was assisted by Heather and Jack. Dennis was on hand to keep everybody on the right track. Again it was great to have Ned, Pearl, Barney and Finn down doing stuff and lovely to see Kiersten imprinting the scene in her mind. Ned and Kiersten sailed with Pearl on the little Quest while Erika and partner were out on a Pacer. It is great to see the club boats being used. Dom was also out on the bigger Quest with the adult learners after a morning with Learn2Sail. 04.01.2022 A bit of film for the beginner + sail training group No 1

02.01.2022 RACE REPORT 9 January 2021 Your scribe has had a bit of time off over Christmas and the New Year as he visited parent and family at Phillip Island. Had a lovely time but conditions were not good for sailing or the beach so all 60000 visitors to the Island congregated in the Main Street; you couldn’t move in a straight line and most were maskless. We stayed at home and did odd jobs like replacing veranda support, resetting bathroom taps, rebuilding pergola for shade of ferns a...Continue reading
