25.01.2022 To celebrate Speech Pathology Week we have been profiling our team members and speech pathology students. Today we introduce you to Rebekah, a student from Curtin University who is currently learning alongside our Speech Pathology Team. What made you choose to study speech pathology? I chose to study speech pathology because I really enjoyed studying human biology in years 11 and 12 and from that I really wanted to study a degree in health but wasnt sure which field exactly.... My aunty is a nurse and she has worked alongside Speechies and thought that it would be a great job for me to look into. I did some research and I really liked the sound of speech pathology so decided to apply. Ever since then I have thoroughly enjoyed studying the various range of practices and really look forward to graduating soon and applying for jobs so that my career as a speech pathologist can begin! #SPweek Speech Pathology Australia
25.01.2022 It's Throwback Thursday! Assistive Technology (devices and equipment) changes and improves over time, particularly communications and technology items. Check out this throwback item: The Ultratec TTY phone from the 90s. This handy device was for deaf and hard of hearing people as well as people with speech difficulties. This older model displayed text either as a printout or on the single line digital screen during a phone call. The text was typed into the TTY by a National... Relay Service (NRS) officer who acted as the scribe on the phone call, they would then read aloud the persons typed response. Fast forward to today and we have many more TTY options such as the Konnekt Videophone, which offers a video call function and uses live captioning software to convert verbal language into text on the screen during a call. The Konnekt has its own phone number and anyone can call it. There is also a NRS App which offers access to live captions and other call types via smart devices. For more helpful information about TTY devices and options, give our friendly team a call to talk about your needs: 08 9381 0600. IMAGE1: Ultratec TTY phone circa 1990s. 20.01.2022 This month is the 9th anniversary of @Dementia Awareness Month Globally Dementia Awareness Month's the is #LetsTalkAboutDementia and locally #TogetherWeCanEnsureNooneFacesDementiaAlone Alzheimer's WA hopes the month will highlight the need for Western Australians (both young and not so young), to reach out to people living with dementia and their families within their communities to let them know they're not alone. By reaching out within our communities, we create opportuniti...es to talk and learn and gain greater awareness regarding dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Every three seconds someone in the world develops dementia, with the number of people living with dementia around the world being more than 50 million. In Australia dementia is the second leading cause of death, and the leading cause of death for females. At Indigo we support #LetsTalkAboutDementia, if you would like to have a conversation about any concerns or questions you may have, please contact our friendly and knowledgeable health professionals on Ph: 9381 0600 or visit our website www.indigosolutions.org.au For more information on how you can support Dementia Awareness Month visit Alzheimers WA www.alzheimerswa.org.au (see Events & Get Involved)
19.01.2022 Today, as part of Speech Pathology Week, we introduce you to Katherine, a Speech Pathology Student from Curtin University who is currently learning alongside our Speech Pathology Team. What made you choose to study speech pathology? I was always interested in allied health professions such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech pathology through high school. As I read more into what the speech pathology profession was, I realised there was so much more that speech...ies do than I realised which made me want to choose speech pathology over the other professions. There were so many areas that interested me about speech pathology that I did not know speechies targeted. This really intrigued me to learn more about the profession. The speech pathology students at Curtin Open Day sold speech to me through being so lovely and knowledgeable (like all speechies I have met are) which made me want to study it! I can see that this professional is so crucial and impactful to a persons life which makes me so enthused to be studying this degree. #SPweek Speech Pathology Australia See more

14.01.2022 Please vote and share! I am very excited to announce that I have been selected as a finalist for Westfield Innaloo's 2020 Westfield Local Heroes. There are 6 fi...nalists for this centre, with the three finalists with the most votes being awarded a $10,000 grant for their affiliated organisation. Please click on the link to vote! https://www.westfield.com.au//4BJvCIjMU4/local-heroes-2020 My nomination came because of my work with the Western Australian Powerchair Football Association - WAPFA. If I am successful, WAPFA will be able to use the $10,000 grant to assist in purchasing a Strikeforce (or a specialised sports power wheelchair) to build our league and introduce new players to the sport. At a time when our player base has been decimated, this could not have come at a better time. Having a spare Strikeforce will enable the WA powerchair football league to grow and provide even more opportunities for new players to grow to love the sport, just as I have. Please vote, share, comment and like so this can be seen by as many people as possible! Thank you in advance for your support!

08.01.2022 To celebrate Speech Pathology Week, Indigo Speech Pathologist Ashley shares some insights into her profession. What is something you would love everyone to know about communication? I would love people to know that communication is going to look different for everyone. Everyone has a communication toolbox (all our different communication methods) and we pick the best tool for the job at the time. People who use AAC all the time or part of the time just have an extra tool in... their toolbox that they rely on at different times. If everyone could accept and celebrate these different methods then we can start to focus on the message, on the conversation, and on the connection. Whats the best part of your job? The best part of my job is helping people get to those ah ha moments for themselves or for other people. It can be a tiny shift in thinking that can make all the difference to someones life. Whats your favourite AAC resource? My favourite AAC resource is probably the Project Core through Center for Literacy and Disability Studies. It is a fantastic start for anyone new to AAC or even wanting a refresher. They take principles you can apply to any AAC system in a really practical way. #SPweek Speech Pathology Australia

03.01.2022 Today, as part of Speech Pathology Week, we introduce you to Kellen, a Program Support Officer with Indigo. Kellen has been so inspired working alongside the Speech Pathology Team that this year she began studying speech pathology at Edith Cowan University (ECU). What made you choose to study speech pathology? I have been working with Indigo for two years supporting the speech team and decided to take the plunge and study speech pathology! The main reason I chose to study is ...because I have been able to witness the amazing difference communication access makes in a persons life. I think everyone should have a voice and I am excited to be a part of making that possible for people. What is something that changed the way you think about communication disabilities? Last year I went to the Agosci Inc Conference with the Schools Team. This was an amazing experience and I had the opportunity to have conversations with people using communication devices. This really inspired me and changed the way I thought about communication disabilities as I got to see people communicating across a range of different platforms and connecting with each other. This was the first time I had witnessed people communicating using communication devices with confidence and ease, it really opened my eyes to the possibilities out there. #SPweek Speech Pathology Australia
