Despite all the videos we see across social media and on the news Most children with hearing loss do not experience a magical reaction the day th...ey receive their hearing devices or when their cochlear implants are activated. And although those videos might make viewers outside the arena feel warm and fuzzy, those in the trenches often form unrealistic expectations followed by disappointment. The truth is, the REAL MAGICAL MOMENTS for a child with HEARING LOSS often come later. They come after a lot of commitment and hard work. In smaller yet profound ways They happen when: Your child turns to their name. Your child hears a bird. Your child learns a new babble sound. Your child keeps their device on. Your child includes their hearing device in their school self-portrait. Your child makes a new friend. Your child hears a wave crashing along the shore. Your child learns how to put their own cochlear implant processor on. Your child sings along to a song on the radio. Your child makes it through an audiology appointment without a meltdown. 02.01.2022 This year has isolated us all - unable to travel interstate to attend any professional learning meetings. For 2020, I am going to be doing my learning from the ...couch this Saturday with Audacity 2020: a virtual conference organized by our colleagues in the ADA ( American Academy of Doctors of Audiology) , IAA and IANZ. All independent audiology groups with a unique perspective quite outside the box. I've still got to get my head around the virtual networking, but am looking forward to the multiple interesting presentations - especially as we'll have access to the materials for up to 18 months! The last time I got to go to an American conference, the world was a very different place (2001) with different threats to world peace and health than we have now, and coming from Tasmania, even seeing a Starbucks outlet at the conference was a revelation.
