19.01.2022 To All Dentists, In September of this year, the Independent Dentist Network met with a proactively, concerned group of 21 dentists. We invited independent federal member Andrew Wilkie to attend and discussed major issues affecting dentistry in Australia. Health fund policies were paying up to 40% lower health insurance claims to policy holders who freely selected which health professionals they chose to treat them. Patients with identical policies and premiums were being pun...ished for exercising freedom of choice. With IDN’s encouragement, Andrew Wilke’s has put forward a bill with 3 essential reforms that promote patient choice. You can view the bill here http://andrewwilkie.org/private-health-insurance-bill-to-b/ Firstly, the bill amends legislation to prevent private health insurers from offering differential rebates, therefore promoting freedom of choice for patients. Secondly, this bill prevents private health insurance companies from acting as both insurers and providers of medical treatment - a clear conflict of interest. Thirdly, this bill helps regulate the use of data that private health insurers obtain from the HICAPS system, in order to prevent data misuse and avoid market manipulation. Now we need your help. We know that many dentists are short on time, so we have made a draft letter for you to use as a template, that you can email to your local house of representative members and state senators. Use the below link to look up your local representative, copy-paste the provided draft text into an email (addressed to them) and hit send it should take no longer than a few minutes. The aim is to get them to raise matters outlined in the bill in their respective party rooms https://independentdentist.com.au/support-wilke-bill/ It’s time for us to level the playing field for both dentists and patients alike and promote changes that will shift the private health fund focus from maximizing profit to prioritizing patient care.
