23.01.2022 We are beyond thrilled to let you know that the 2021 Big Brother Movement Youth Scholarship Award for Horticulture has been announced by Graham Ross, VMM, and it has been awarded to Ashley Walker, who not only works in a retail capacity but works at an IGC member store, Welby Garden Centre. Congratulations, Ashley! I think it is fair to say that we are all well aware of the lack of people choosing horticulture and ornamental garden retail nowadays, so its imperative we find ...ways to encourage those that we do have to stay and we can do that by helping them bloom and prosper with professional training and scholarships. It’s imperative that our National industry invests in its future in areas like entry-level apprenticeships, plant and product training, and it should be supporting the individual’s quest to be the best they can be in their chosen field. It must be said that much of the funds for this sponsorship were raised at the 2018 IGC National Conference (held in Kirribilli, NSW) when three paintings (of ELVIS PRESLEY, Marilyn Monroe, and Frank Sinatra) were auctioned, and the winning bids were won by IGC members Scott McLay of Brookfield Garden Centre (QLD), Rob Macri of Four Seasons Landscape & Garden Centre (NSW), and Danny Rawlings, IGC Preferred Supplier Brunnings-Gardman NSW (who manufacture the IGC exclusive products Plant Power & Lawn Power). We thank them for their contributions and commitment to our industry. We'd like to recognise Peter Thorburn from Honeysuckle Garden & Honeysuckle Park for his introduction of the BBM to IGC and his work to promote the BBM to our industry since 2017. Also, we want to acknowledge and thank the IGC Patron and Chair of The Australian Garden Council, Graham Ross, VMM and BBM Ambassador for his extensive and continual work to promote our industry and support it’s people through initiatives like the BBM Youth Scholarship for Horticulture. IGC remains committed to doing what it can to help raise funds for future BBM Youth Scholarship Awards, and we encourage all retailers to enter their staff in to the programme. We also encourage all industry suppliers to get involved and they may do that by contacting Evan Mueller via [email protected] or by phone 02 7226 5010 / 0418 676 319.
