05.01.2022 COVID-19 is not going away anytime soon and we need to remain vigilant. We need to keep our quarantine measures strong. We can’t be complacent. While WA has had... no community spread for more than six months, the Chief Health Officer has made it clear the risks around us pose a serious threat to our State, as do the border controls of some other States. You just need to look around the world, and see new harsh restrictions being imposed in many countries, to try limit a deadly second or third wave. Western Australia is one of the most free societies in the world, but it does mean we are more susceptible to a serious outbreak. For this reason, based on the health advice, we will need to extend Phase 4 of the COVID-19 roadmap. HOWEVER there will be an important modification to the 2 square metre rule for some venues. The openness of Phase 4 has been integral in our State’s economic recovery, and has kept us safe and strong. However, Western Australia remains more susceptible to a major outbreak should COVID-19 reach our State, given nearly all physical distancing and gatherings restrictions have been removed. An outbreak in our community would more than likely result in new restrictions being imposed. As a Government, together with the Chief Health Officer, we will continue to review these arrangements to determine if COVID-safe solutions are possible in the future. Though Phase 4 will be extended, the following change will come into effect starting this weekend: Effective from Saturday, October 24, selected venues that predominantly hold seated events will be exempt from the 2 square metre rule. They will be permitted to reach up to 60 per cent of their usual maximum capacity for seated and ticketed performances. These venues include: theatres, concert halls, auditoriums, amphitheatres, cinemas, comedy lounges, and performing arts centres. These venues have been deemed ‘low risk’ by the Chief Health Officer, as they are seated and ticketed. This modification to Phase 4 will provide these venues and industries particularly culture and the arts the opportunity to function in a COVID-safe way, without being disproportionally impacted by the 2 square metre rule. I understand many people will welcome this news today, but I also recognise that the 2 square metre rule does act as an impediment to some other sectors. We will continue to review these restrictions to determine if COVID-safe solutions are possible in the future, based on health advice. The Chief Health Officer has recommended a further two months be considered for Phase 4’s modified measures. However, no new tentative date will be set for Phase 5 at this point, based on the health advice and due to WA’s current strong health and economic standing. The State Government will continue to review up-to-date health advice and provide an updated roadmap for WA, when the health advice allows. It is my intention for this roadmap to include details about the future of our hard border again, only if the health advice allows at that point in time. We’ve come so far, so it’s more important than ever that we don’t get complacent and take a risk we will all regret. I will always be guided by the health advice - a cautious approach is the only sensible way forward when dealing with this devastating virus. I will not unnecessarily compromise the success we have had in controlling the introduction of COVID-19 into WA. Western Australia continues to lead the nation in our recovery from COVID-19, and the community’s response has helped keep WA safe and strong.

05.01.2022 Chookas to Arena Arts and Entertainment whose production of Bombshells, directed by Christine Ellis.

05.01.2022 OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUNG WA TRANS MASC ACTORS The Kabuki Drop are advertising auditions for young actors for the role of Caleb in the 2021 theatre work, Whale Fall.... AUDITION DETAILS: WHEN: Saturday 17th October Sunday 18th October, Times TBC WHERE: Large Meeting Room Level 1, King Street Arts Centre, 357-365 Murray Street, Perth 6000 SYNOPSIS: Whale Fall is an 80-minute play inspired by WA writer Ian Sinclair and informed by environmental writer Rebecca Giggs’ essay of the same name. Nadine returns to the beachside home and family she abandoned years ago. Back to re-establish a relationship with her daughter, Nadine discovers they are now oceans apart. She must navigate her ex-husband’s anger at her leaving, and learn to accept and support her now son Caleb, with his desire to begin medically affirming his gender. Concurrently Caleb recounts the story of a dying Whale, a process known as a whale fall as it descends to the sea floor and forms a new biodiverse ecosystem. This poetic monologue intertwined with the action combines the central themes of adaptation and transition: across generations, within one’s own body, and the bizarre ecological changes occurring today. THEMES & CONTENT: Whale Fall speaks to issues of adaptation and transition across society, communities, ecology, generations, and bodily. The latter is explored with a young character Caleb, who at age 10 has started affirming his gender. The work takes place as Caleb’s separated birth parents come together to discuss the decision to begin the medical process of puberty blockers. FURTHER QUERIES: Please contact Alexander Egloff (Producer) on 0478 106 580 or [email protected] if you wish to discuss this opportunity in more detail.

02.01.2022 Our WA Recovery Plan has been all about creating jobs now on projects that help make our State better - big or small. This week's State Budget will continue tha...t theme, and today I can tell you about a small, but important part of that plan. With the new Community Capital Works Fund, we're offering grants of up to $250,000 for WA CaLD community organisations to undertake works on their local facilities. It will help support groups which do such important work across WA, it will boost our State's multicultural communities and it will help create local jobs across WA. In total, $3 million is available for refurbishments, maintenance works and upgrades to facilities across WA. CaLD community associations own and operate a range of venues, providing their communities with dedicated space to practice and celebrate their individual cultures and traditions. They are utilised for cultural events, social and educational activities such as language schools, seniors’ programs and more. The grants are available to CaLD community associations or community service organisations specifically established to provide services for those communities. Applications for the CCWF open on Monday, October 12 and close on November 23, 2020. For more information, visit www.omi.wa.gov.au

01.01.2022 Best of British luck to the lovely people at Garrick Theatre whose production of The Importance of Being Earnest opens this evening, directed by Douglas Sutherland-Bruce.
