18.01.2022 Tonight 6:30pm EST on Zoom! https://www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=654390 Jefa Greenaway in discussion with Peta Clancy and Elizabeth Grant When All Is Not Said or Done We need to resist the stasis that creeps up one leg as we sit in our office chairs, two screens staring back at us. We need to challenge the surfacing effect our fingers produce; freezing a process at a point into a line, an outline, a form.... some kind of expensive shelter. ... . Looking back, looking forward, our careers exist on Indigenous land. In this session, Jefa Greenaway is joined by Peta Clancy and Elizabeth Grant to further the discussion and address the issue of sustaining allyship and what it means to practice on Indigenous Country. The event will seek to examine or at least spur from questions on: How to approach allyship and sustain accompliceship for the length of a career What it may look like to have a career intertwined with Indigenous theory and knowledge Examine how time and temporal scales plays out in our cultures Practical steps to developing relationships with Indigenous communities #alwayswasalwayswillbe #indigenousarchitecture #indigenousdesign #indigenousled RMIT University Monash University Art Design & Architecture MSD - Melbourne School of Design

15.01.2022 Reshared from torontodotcom discussing a new project at the University of Toronto. Alfred Waugh and the team from Formline Architecture have designed the ‘Indigenous House’ as a place where Indigenous cultures can be shared and celebrated. The great, round room of Indigenous House will open into a sunken garden will be surrounded by a ramp and landscapes, bringing in the birch forest and plants native to the ravine into the building. Other significant artworks will be include...d into the project. Formline is designing the Indigenous House in conjunctions with Toronto’s LGA architectural partners. A curving grid of glue-laminated timber will support the roof and nod to traditional bentwood construction techniques. One spiritual practice common to many Indigenous people in Turtle Island is smudging, the ceremonial burning of sacred plants such as cedar to remove negative energy. In most contemporary buildings, that would set off a smoke detector. At the Indigenous House, that won’t happen. The fire protection system uses a heat detector instead. Smudging can happen anywhere. Waugh states connection with nature is a key part of his practice: In Indigenous culture, nature is at the centre of our value system. Accordingly, the Indigenous House reaches out into the landscape, he said, and engages the landscape in a meaningful way. It will be built into a new rise, providing long views over the adjacent valley. The basic principles of heavy insulation and using the warmth of the earth to moderate interior temperatures are in keeping with contemporary green building practices. So the Indigenous House architects and engineers are employing a higher-tech version. The building’s fresh air will pass through so-called earth tubes set 2.7 metres below ground, which will use the moderating force of the ground to moderate room temperatures. Cold air will be warmed slightly in winter; hot air cooled slightly in summer. Construction starts in 2021. Alfred Waugh, who is a member of the Fond Du Lac Denesuline Nation of Saskatchewan, is among a small group of architects in Canada exploring what Indigenous architecture means now, as the country has moved into a period of reconciliation. His work including the Toronto building, which should break ground this year provides a range of answers to that question, from the symbolic to the technical. #Indigenousarchitecture #Firstnationsarchitecture #indigenousdesign #CentennialCollege #MorningsideCampus #Vancover #Indigenousarchitects #Formilinearchitecture #IndigenousHouse #Canada #Canadianarchitecture #AlfredWaugh #Commuityconsultation #Huron-Wendat, the #Seneca #Mississaugas #CreditRiver #Indigenousknowledgesystems #nature #utsc

08.01.2022 The Freedom Georgia Initiative aims to plant the seeds of a potential new Black Wall Street in Toomsboro, Georgia. A group of 19 Black families purchased 97 acres of land to plant the seeds for a new city. Georgia-based realtor Ashley Scott launched The Freedom Georgia Initiative with her friend entrepreneur and investor Renee Walters to spearhead the purchase. In an op-ed published on Blavity, Scott said it was the tragic death of Ahmaud Arbery a young Black man who w...as killed while out for a jog that inspired her to seek therapy and eventually establish a community where Black people can feel safe. #blacklivesmatter https://www.revolt.tv//black-families-buy-land-georgia-saf I sought counseling from a Black therapist, and it helped. It helped me to realize that what we as Black people are suffering from is racial trauma. We are dealing with systemic racism, Scott wrote. We are dealing with deep-rooted issues that will require more than protesting in the streets. It will take for us as a people, as Atlanta rapper and activist Killer Mike so eloquently put, ‘To plot, plan, strategize, organize and mobilize.’ So that’s what I and my good friend Renee Walters, an entrepreneur and investor, did.
07.01.2022 We know NO PERSON SHOULD DIE IN CUSTODY. It is no secret that many families and communities are traumatised repeatedly when a loved one dies in custody and the coronial inquest almost always retraumatises families. Victoria has finally enacted protocols relating to coronial inquests for Aboriginal people dying in custody. They are listed below. Please treat people who have suffered the death of a loved one with respect and dignity and seek services for them if they wish. 05.01.2022 The second coin in a commemorative series honouring Indigenous astronomy has been released. The uncirculated silver $1 coin depicts the "Seven Sisters" who fled the sky in order to escape a man wanting to take one of the women as a wife. The Seven Sisters are among the brightest and most recognisable clusters in the Taurus constellation. Yamaji peoples of the Murchison region in Western Australia refer to the Seven Sister stars as Nyarluwarri, in the Wajarri. When Nyarluwarri... is low on the horizon at sunset, the people know that emu eggs are ready to harvest. The coin was developed in collaboration with Wajarri-Noongar artist, Christine Jugarnu Collard. Mrs Collard paints under the name Jugarnu which broadly translated means wise/old woman. Please see link: http://www.yamajiart.com/artists/christine-collard/) and works with the Yamaji Art Group. Our congratulations to the artist, family and community on this achievement. 01.01.2022 The Western Australian government has released early designs for a $50 million pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the Swan River, stretching from Victoria Park to the city via Heirisson Island, on the Country of the Whadjuk Noongar people. The initial design, which envisions gigantic boomerang-shaped pylons supporting a gently curved bridge, has been prepared by multidisciplinary firm IPV Delft in consultation with a Whadjuk working group. It takes inspiration from the storie...s of two key figures associated with Heirisson Island: Noongar Whadjuk woman Fanny Balbuk, who lived during the early days of the Swan River Colony and is remembered for her resistance to colonial expansion; and Noongar man Yagan, famed for his resistance to British colonial settlement in the early nineteenth century.
