12.01.2022 Who you got for best TAG player at Carlton Football Club?
12.01.2022 What a great little Newsletter article from St Clare's Catholic School in Townsville: BIMBI WADJA NEWS What a week for the Bimbi Wadja Club with Domica, Rebecca and Nathan from Wanyara (meaning active in Yorta Yorta language) visiting St Clares last Friday. They taught traditional Aboriginal games that focused largely on language and physical skills. Domica explained where each game originated as well as terms for the games and equipment used in local language. The purp...ose of each game was then outlined (e.g. to teach a skill such as spearing or for entertainment, etc.). The students learnt about the ingenuity and resourcefulness of Indigenous people to create equipment from resources available. One of the most impressive pieces of equipment was the marngrook (ball). In Victoria, Domica explained that this ball was traditionally made with possum skin and sewn together with kangaroo tendons using a needle made from bone. She also explained that in Queensland a similar ball (called a buroinjin) was made using kangaroo skin. It was then game faces on as the Bimbi Wadja Club put their bodies on the line in the following 3 games. Puloga Regular mock combat tournaments took place all over Australia within mobs. Puloga was essentially played as an entertainment activity, though the opportunity was taken to settle disputes, real or imaginary. It also gave the men in the tribes a chance to show off their prowess and courage before the women. Jumpinpin Named after a South Queensland fishing hub that was a traditional meeting place for Aboriginal people on Stradbroke Island, Jumpinpin was traditionally played to teach kids how to spear fish. Weme Is a stone bowling target game played by the Walbiri people of central Australia. One player would roll a stone which was used as a target by the second player. Weme means throwing in the Eastern Arrernte Language. Here are some of the reactions from the students to the TAG workshop: Jack (4A) It was useful for kids who wanted to know more about traditional games. Kendall (3A) It was entertaining. Marli (3A) It was interesting. I like the game with the tags (Puloga). I liked how Domica told us about the history as well, especially about the ball made from possum skin. Charlotte (2A) My favourite game was Jumpinpin because you got to be a fish and swim away from the hunters. Lorella (Prep C) I liked Weme where you had to roll the balls. This year, St Clares has signed up to a 3 year project called 5 Continents. Set up by Signora Arrate, 5 schools across the globe (Mexico, Japan, Spain, The Congo and Australia) are embarking on a 3 year project to teach and learn traditional games and dances and share this knowledge with the other 4 schools.
12.01.2022 Wanyara entered two teams into the Victorian Statewide Indigenous Netball Carnival, unfortunately semi-finals were the end of the road for the girls. But, Team TAG enjoyed the time with the community, sharing laughs with so many, getting mums back on the court, building bonds, talking with elders, playing with kids. These moments are grounding for the stories, and sessions we deliver. ... Thanks to Tony Lovett & the team at Vacsal for putting on such an event. #morethanjustnetball @emusportswear
