20.01.2022 This is my beautiful Aka Maria Horn née Mau R.I.P who was a Nurse at the Thursday Island Hospital for 30 years. This year has been recognised as the Year of the Nurse and Midwife. Yesterday's United Nations International Day of Older Persons 2020 highlighted the role of the health care workforce in contributing to the health of older persons, with special recognition of the nursing profession, and a primary focus on the role of women - who are relatively undervalued and in most cases inadequately compensated.

19.01.2022 SYSTEMIC RACISM IS AN INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS!!! A 37-year-old Atikamekw woman and mother of 7 children woman, had gone to the Joliette hospital abo...ut 70km from Montreal suffering from stomach pains. She was screaming out in agony for help but nobody was helping her. Instead, the nurses stood there and abused her, so she turned on her phone to film the "treatment" she was receiving from these "medical professionals". Laying on her death bed, the final words this beautiful First Nations woman was forced to hear were the disgusting abuse from nurses calling her an idiot for making bad life choices and pretty much telling her that her kids would be ashamed of her behaviour. Then she died. #JusticeforJoyceEchaquan Art: @marie_eve_illustration

17.01.2022 JUST ANNOUNCED: Congratulations to Vincent Namatjira on winning this year’s #ArchibaldPrize with his portrait of Adam Goodes, 'Stand strong for who you are'! ...‘We share some similar stories and experiences of disconnection from culture, language and Country, and the constant pressures of being an Aboriginal man in this country. When I was younger and growing up in the foster system in Perth, Indigenous footballers were like heroes to me. Goodesy is much more than a great footballer though, he took a strong stand against racism and said, enough is enough. I stand strong with you too, brother.’ - Vincent Namatjira The portrait is on display in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prize exhibition, opening tomorrow, Saturday 26 September at 10am. Due to popular demand, opening weekend tickets are sold out. Pre-booking is strongly recommended to avoid disappointment plan your visit and purchase tickets now: https://bit.ly/2RzI3JW Artwork: Winner Archibald Prize 2020 Vincent Namatjira 'Stand strong for who you are' the artist With thanks to Presenting Partner ANZ Australia #ArtGalleryofNSW #VincentNamatjira Iwantja Arts

17.01.2022 Once again Koeyma Eso (Thank you) Sydney Opera House for Dance Rites, an opportunity to perform after many months of lockdown for Covid. It was a boost for our ...spirits to sing & dance again. It was an effective marketing avenue to maintain our presence with audiences and the public. In return SOH will always count on us to promote Dance Rites as a vehicle for dance groups from small & remote communities to participate on a national stage. This year 6 groups from our five communities in the NPA (Northern Peninsula Area) entered and 3 made the finals! How good is that ! and one of us Won! Let us Congratulate Guba Markai from Bamaga for taking out the top prize. We are proud of the young dancers who put on a fantastic show of precision and wowed the judges. Naygayiw Gigi and Guba Markai are both Saibai Islander dance groups based in Bamaga. We are family. Congratulations also to Injinoo Storm Thathilgaw Minar for making the finals, and a shout out to Wabanan Geth, Injinoo & New Mapoon dancers for participating in Dance Rites. NPA is a stronghold for traditional dance, our 3 Aboriginal and 2 Torres Strait Islander communities are diverse and rich in culture and history. This is evident in our Dance, which encompasses our stories, songs and language. Kapu Woenab Mura. See more

02.01.2022 ... Cornrows were used to help slaves escape slavery? In the time of slavery in Colombia, hair braiding was used to relay messages. For example, to... signal that they wanted to escape, women would braid a hairstyle called departes. It had thick, tight braids, braided closely to the scalp and was tied into buns on the top. And another style had curved braids, tightly braided on their heads. The curved braids would represent the roads they would [use to] escape. In the braids, they also kept gold and hid seeds which, in the long run, helped them survive after they escaped. They would also use seeds as decoration in the hair, but would later plant the seeds and grow their own crop. It is more than just a simple hairstyle.
