23.01.2022 Ten new Indigenous recruits will soon travel to #AliceSprings to start their Real Jobs Program (RJP) training in the pastoral industry. They will be hosted by the Northern Territory Cattlemen's Association (NTCA) and new recruit Kayla Costello said she couldn’t wait! My pop is a truck driver at Alexandria Station and, I got to help him chase a few cattle up the ramp, onto the truck. It made me realise I wanted to make a career in this line of work. ... RJP is an employment and training program in the #NorthernTerritory that provides young #Aboriginal people ‘hands on’ training experience in the pastoral, land management and tourism industries. 22.01.2022 As part of the Nyaliga fire project in the east #Kimberley region, the Nyaliga Rangers and Traditional Owners undertake aerial and ground fire operations each year, to preserve and protect country. In 2020 the project team completed six aerial burning runs over 88.4 hours and four on-ground burning trips. Aerial burning is an important part of the project and this year several #Nyaliga employees and rangers participated in incendiary machine operator training, organised ...by the Kimberley Land Council and North Regional TAFE, with support from Wilinggin Aboriginal Corporation. 22.01.2022 This week staff from the ILSC attended the official opening of Boola Boornap, Australia’s first Aboriginal tree nursery, near #Northam in #WesternAustralia. The ceremony was attended by #Noongar Elders, Iris Maude Bonshore OAM, Deanne Eades and Deborah McGuire who delivered the Welcome to Country. Also in attendance was the Governor of Western Australia, The Honourable Kim Beazley AC, Senator Sue Lines and other guests. Boola Boornap (meaning place of many trees) is now owne...d by the Noongar Land Enterprise Group (NLE) and provides jobs to people from the local Aboriginal community. The new business aims to sell a million seedlings this year as part of its plans to become a self-sustaining commercially viable business. Mr Barron started Beemurra Aboriginal Corporation and through support from the ILSC, Mr Barron took over ownership of Yallalie Downs, in 2001.... Since then he has built a successful cattle backgrounding operation with plans to further expand his perennial pastures to support more cattle grazing areas on the property. Representatives from six Aboriginal estates who make up the Traditional Owners, including #Kunupa, #Kanturrpa, #Mantigarr, #Pirttangi, #Ngarka and #Kangawarla peoples along with the Northern Land Council and the ILSC joined the Hon. Richard White to celebrate an historic native title determination event held on country. 16.01.2022 The ILSC recently hosted a soil conservation field day and tour of #BankaBankaStation in Northern Territory Australia. The tour group spent the day with a local soil specialist and Indigenous Pastoral Program Officers from Northern Territory Government who shared their valuable insights into sustainable management of native pastures and feral animals. A big thank you to the Traditional Owners and everyone who participated in this informative day out.... Across #Australia our staff joined online to learn together about Aboriginal Auslan, and traditional Aboriginal healing. ... Each office participated in local events, including spending an afternoon with John Paul Janke with Rork Projects and a Didgeridoo Performance by Eckybow in #Brisbane, a music event by Abmusic - Aboriginal Corporation in #Perth and a tasty bush tucker morning tea in #Adelaide. With support from Outback Helicopter Airwork NT, North Australian Fire Information - NAFI, #DorisvaleStation and Bushfires NT, the Rangers put in long hours to reinforce firebreaks and backburn country to halt the spread. Operated by the ILSC, Fish River Station is situated 150 km south of #Darwin in the #NorthernTerritory.... It is an ecologically significant property that protects long stretches of the #DalyRiver, fringed by savanna woodland, rainforests and important river floodplains. The workshop was led by Indigenous fire practitioner Victor Steffensen and Gerry Turpin with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services - QFES and Preston Campbell Official. Mr Morrison is a highly respected and trusted Indigenous leader from #Katherine in the Northern Territory Australia, who has both #Aboriginal and #TorresStraitIslander heritage. Joe brings a wealth of experience to his new role having worked for the past 30 years in northern Australia with the North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance Ltd, governments, industry and land councils.... He has been deeply involved in the areas of Indigenous rangers, carbon farming, climate change, economic development, research and policy, water, land rights and native title. I was heartened to see the announcement for this year’s theme for #NAIDOC2021 is ‘Heal Country’ which calls for stronger measures for all Australians to recognise, protect and maintain all aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage. 05.01.2022 The winter rains have fallen, bringing Gayini Nimmie Caira wetlands back to life. Gayini is an 88,000-hectare property located on the Murrumbidgee floodplain in #NSW, referred to as the ‘#Kakadu of the south’. Earlier this year the property was handed back to the Nari Nari Tribal Council to ensure the protection of this ecologically vital wetland and significant Aboriginal heritage sites.... The purchase and handing back of Gayini was facilitated by The Nature Conservancy Australia and made possible through co-funding from the ILSC and the Wyss Campaign for Nature. Roelands Village ex Roelands Mission in #Collie, #WesternAustralia was a former mission for children of the Stolen Generations, but today is a thriving bush food operation. Purchased by the ILSC in 2004, the 225-hectare property is managed by Woolkabunning Kiaka Aboriginal Corporation and provides local employment and training opportunities for Indigenous people. ... 02.01.2022 It has been almost a year since former Master Chef winner Adam Liaw travelled to the Aboriginal community of #BeagleBay, north of #Broome in #WesternAustralia, to taste a range of #bushfoods and learn about the benefits and traditional knowledge of the Kakadu Plum fruit. Adam met with Aunty Pat and Aunty Val, from Mayi Harvests, to try #KakaduPlum (or Gubinge in WA), taste Gubinge jam and make #Gubinge ice cream using two tin cans in an outdoor kitchen with kids from the loc...al school.
