17.01.2022 Brigitte Ross' extraordinary film that involved many people from Kangaroo Valley is being shown tonight on SBS/NITV at 9.30. It is unprecedented that a first film by a non-Aboriginal producer has the honour of being in such an important showcase. Without Brigitte this film would never have been conceived, developed or finished. I know that Batumbil would want her to be acknowledged first and foremost as this film goes to air. We have waited over a year now for it to be shown ...out of respect for Batumbil who passed away at the end of last year. This also makes tonights viewing so poignant and important. 'Always Was, Always Will Be': Every night this week, NITV is showcasing rich Indigenous stories in the lead up to January 26, including special network coverage from Sunset to Sunrise. Over 50 years later, as Elders of the Gumatj clan in North East Arnhem land, the sisters joyously relive their life experiences while retracing the path of sacred dogs along the coastline of the Arafura Sea. This documentary follows the Burrarwanga sisters as they speak to their country, showing us how we can connect to the land as gurrutu (family) relations. 07.01.2022 Dear Friends I am a great fan of the ABCs Gardening Australia. I watch it every week and I am becoming a big fan of the new focus of the show on endangered flora in Australia. Did you happen to see Dr. Noushka Reiter talking about the native orchid Conservation Program at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Cranbourne, Victoria? If not the link is below. Dr Reiker talks about how these fragile plants are indicators of our larger environment. This is why biodiversity credits which pr...otect our existing flora and fauna are so important as compared to carbon credits and other Kyoto green house instruments which are about reducing green house gases from our future development of land and water in Australia. As some of the biggest land holders Aboriginal communities are critical in protecting our existing flora and fauna. Not only that it is one of the major new ways that Aboriginal homelands, Indigenous Protected Areas and Deeds of Grant in Trust can be sustainable. In all of my twenty years working for the ISX and trying to find investments in Aboriginal businesses I have never found a better model that the biodiversity credits being pioneered by Peter and Ruby Dykes at their Tricketts Arch Property near Oberon in NSW. Of course at the heart of Peter and Ruby’s property is two thirds of the worlds known population of Dioris aequalis the buttercup double-tailed orchid (pictured above). When we sell all of Peter and Ruby’s biodiversity credits there will be a perpetual fund that will support their family to look after their property forever. It will not just be for the electoral cycle of a government but forever. These credits are selling fast! Why? Because new development of our urban environments are chewing up more and more of our natural environments. As Dr Reiker says our native orchids, amongst many other trees and animals, are under threat. So by buying these credits developers, conservationists and private individuals are helping to preserve our native flora and fauna. Most importantly too, as the case of Peter and Ruby shows, this is a major new way to support Aboriginal communities and peoples doing what comes naturally preserving our most precious natural assets. Please contact me to find out how you can purchase some Tricketts Arch biodiversity credits at any time.
