21.01.2022 Nation-states are artificial social constructions that contain arbitrary borders that create in and out groups. Politicians use this artificial construction to create populist movements that label migrants as deviant, alien, and the other.

05.01.2022 This is who we really need to contact to express our disappointment over the cashless debit card! These are some of the businesses who will profit from the privatisation of welfare payments in Australia! If we all make waves with these companies they will eventually tell Govt they won’t be involved anymore & Scott Morrison’s plan will fail! He obviously won’t listen to the public who voted him into that seat; but when the companies who donate to his government stop doing so.... well money talks doesn’t it?!
04.01.2022 This! @healasista
02.01.2022 Kill the Indian in him, and save the man. Native American Heritage Month and the "Indian Boarding School." I share this every year with a little different info.... This is, for the most part, a forgotten part of US history. I am amazed how when I talk about residential schools, it is the first time people have heard of them. They were originally created by U.S. cavalry captain Richard Henry Pratt. The Boarding School may have the most impact for the living generations. Most of us are only a couple of generations from this part of American history. We are the children and grandchildren of the children you see in photos and we have seen the effect of boarding schools on our loved one's lives. Carlisle is one of the most known of the boarding school. Carlisle Industrial School, in PA, was created to assimilate Native children into Euro-American culture. Over 10,000 Native American children were removed from their homes to be sent to Carlisle alone, from 1879-1918, but the schools existed into the 1960's. I was born in 1973. This is not ancient history. Many of you were alive while these were happening! Carlisle went on to be the model for 26 industrial schools and was an influence on hundreds of boarding schools focused on the slow genocide of Native American children. Pratt's motto was Kill the Indian in him, and save the man." Children’s hair was cut short and their clothing changed to uniforms. They faced emotional, physical and sexual abuse, they were made to do hard labor, forced to be alone in order to reduce the speaking of their native tongue and often times their names were changed. Many never returned home because of disease, work accidents or violence, and were buried in unmarked graves. They are still finding those graves today. In fact the Army, today, is looking for relatives of children who died at Carlisle to assist tribes and families with exhumation and reinterment of remains. Historical atrocity, but what does this have to do with us today? You may think cultural appropriation is being honorable, or those against it are sensitive, PC, liberal or it simply does not exist? While our society uses Native mascots, sports teams name themselves Indians, Chiefs, Braves and R*dskins, mockingly wear our regalia during sports events, dress up on Halloween, cheapen our culture at Thanksgiving, has a President who makes fun of our historical names -- be reminded that the "Indian" in these children were forced to assimilate, suffer abuse and many died under these conditions, all while we appropriate for entertainment.
