21.01.2022 Our lives are changing daily, sometimes hourly, with Covid-19 spreading across countries and borders. We are being bombarded with changing information much of which is negative. It is more important than ever for us to be mindful and self-caring to help ourselves cope with these events. 6 STEPS TO MINDFUL LIVING Mindfulness is a very simple yet profound form of meditation. It invites us to be fully present in the moment and embody a composed approach towards what is unfold...Continue reading

20.01.2022 There is one thing that, when cultivated and regularly practised, leads to deep spiritual intention, to peace, to clear comprehension, to vision and knowledge, to a happy life here and now, and to the culmination of wisdom and awakening. And what is that one thing? It is mindfulness centred on the body. Gautama Buddha
20.01.2022 I recently read this post by Rick Hanson Ph.d. It may be relevant to you and your loved ones in understanding how your brain might be reacting to the Covid and economic news that comes to us daily in all sorts of media formats. 20.01.2022 FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE WORKING FROM HOME A day at home can be very unstructured. In the office your day is broken up by everything from meetings to water-cooler chats, lunch breaks and even toilet breaks, but when you work at home on your own with no planned face-to-face interaction it can be easy to just work for long, unbroken periods. Alternatively you may be more inclined to break boredom and relieve a tired mind by escaping into social media, online shopping or YouTu...be. In order to be productive it is recommended to structure your time and what you want to achieve. For example, working in 45-60 minute chunks of focused work followed by a short break for movement. This can be an effective way to break the day up and maintain your concentration levels. Remember to hydrate and eat small healthy meals at set times in your day. Preparing your food in the morning or on the evening before (as you would if you were going to your workplace) can also help you to be time-efficient in work-mode and make the most of the breaks you take.
19.01.2022 Mindfulness is about being fully awake in our lives. It is about perceiving the exquisite vividness of each moment. We also gain immediate access to our own powerful inner resources of insight, transformation and healing. Jon Kabat-Zinn

17.01.2022 "We must get back into relation, vivid and nourishing relation to the cosmos and the universe. The way is through daily ritual, and is an affair of the individual and the household, a ritual of dawn and noon and sunset, the ritual of the kindling fire and pouring water, the ritual of the first breath, and the last." D. H. Lawrence

17.01.2022 This recent message from Rick Hanson is a useful reminder that engaging the body, not just the mind, is a way to get respite or to change our perspective when worries assail us and life poses unexpected difficulties (like it is for Victorians). It's simple information but worth the read.

12.01.2022 I have been asked to clarify who can receive medicare rebated telehealth sessions because they come under the the 'vulnerable' category. Vulnerable/isolated patients are those where at least one of the following apply: (a) the person has been diagnosed with COVID-19 virus but who is not a patient of a hospital; or (b) the person has been required to isolate themselves in quarantine in accordance with home isolation guidance issued by Australian Health Protection Principal ...Committee (AHPPC); or (c) the person is considered more susceptible to the COVID-19 virus being a person who is: (i) at least 70 years old; or (ii) at least 50 years old and is of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent; or (iii) is pregnant; or (iv) is a parent of a child under 12 months; or (v) is already under treatment for chronic health conditions or is immune compromised; or (d) the person meets the current national triage protocol criteria for suspected COVID-19 infection. ALSO you must have an existing Mental Health Care Plan with the therapist that provides the telehealth sessions. I hope this makes it clearer for all our clients. There is so much new and sometimes contradictory information each day we understand that clients may be feeling the pressure of the these changing circumstances. Our thoughts go particularly to those who are unwell and/or have lost their jobs. Our psychologists are ready to support all our clients with whichever format is most suited to them.

11.01.2022 The great spiritual teacher, Krishnamurti, once said that true liberation is freedom from our own automatic responses (reactions). This is such a wise statement it would benefit all humanity to reflect on it and work on the self awareness needed to know our own patterns of automatic responses and free ourselves from them.

10.01.2022 CREATE A HOME RETREAT When a widespread difficulty like the coronavirus disrupts our lives , it becomes important to draw on our inner strength. It is the time to pause, reflect and bring wisdom, courage and care to ourselves and those around us. As human beings who have survived thousands of generations we know how to survive and support each other in difficult times. Instead of getting caught in collective fear and anxiety, we can remember to take a breath, ground ourselve...s, and calmly take practical precautions and protections, and to assist others to do the same in the spirit of love. Each of us can contribute to the well-being of ourselves, our communities and our world. As Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh explains: When the crowded Vietnamese refugee boats met with storms or pirates, if everyone panicked all would be lost. But if even one person on the boat remained calm and centered, it was enough. It showed the way for everyone to survive. Let us practice together in these difficult days so we can be that person. _______________________________________________ Create a Home Retreat: With the spreading coronavirus, there is the need for many to stay at home. Instead of ‘lockdown’ as this has been called, we can think of it as a home ‘retreat’. The purpose of a retreat is to follow a rhythm of practice that allows you to center yourself, tend your body, quiet your mind. Do this with a routine of yoga, meditation, peaceful music, candles, relaxing baths using calming essential oils if you are fortunate to have a bath, and cook nourishing easy meals such as veg or lentil soups, warm salads, and casseroles. Such meals are mostly inexpensive, easy to make, delicious, and there is no need for umpteen packets of pasta and store bought sauces. Practise gratefulness for quiet time until you can safely step back into that world outside with all the noise, distractions and demands that come with it.
10.01.2022 "Wherever a person is in their life's journey, there may come a time when the longings of their heart ask, 'Is this it? Is this all there is?' In these moments, someone could have a tug in their heart that says, 'Maybe there's more. I want to take it to that next stage ." - Rick Hanson, Ph.D.
09.01.2022 Hi to all our readers. With the recent outbreak of COVID in Brisbane due to the thoughtless behaviour of a couple of people, we now all have to be very mindful again in applying the basic rules around keeping ourselves and our community safe. So please remember to wash your hands well and regularly, to sanitise, and to keep 1.5 mtrs distance between you and others. I know it can be hard to adopt these behaviours stringently again after just feeling a little sense of freed...om while Qld was free of community transmission but we can all help to get back to that sooner rather than later. If the situation worsens many of our therapists might adopt telephone or videoconferencing sessions again to help reduce spread so stay tuned with your therapist for any changes in session delivery. Wishing you all a lovely weekend in this beautiful autumn weather. Stay safe and well. Trish See more

Although the business name will change from Indigo Health for Mind & Body to Growth Assist Psychology & Co the professionalism and care will not. So best of luck to you all in 2021.
02.01.2022 I recently read this line in an email i received and thought how it captures the benefits of self-awareness and mindfulness very well. It also alludes to the energy we expend for no benefit when we fail to accept what is beyond our control to change or fail to change what is our control. Reflect on the sentence below and how it might relate to your life. What you resist persists but seeing is freeing.
02.01.2022 What if our religion was each other? If our practice was our life? If prayer was our words? What if the Temple was the Earth? If forests were our church? If holy water -- the rivers, lakes and oceans? What if meditation was our relationship? If the Teacher was life? If wisdom was self-knowledge? If love was the center of our being? ~ Ganga White

01.01.2022 A TRIAGE APPROACH TO ADDRESS ANXIETY AS YOU WORK THROUGH THE UNPREDICTABILITY AND DIFFICULTIES OF CURRENT TIMES. Many people are feeling overwhelmed and anxious due to unexpected and difficult events that have occurred for many Australians over the past four to six weeks since this pandemic began to impact on our health, job security, financial stability, housing issues, social isolation {particularly for the elderly), access difficulties (eg to Centrelink, charities etc),... and much more. Even for those who are fortunate enough to still be employed and working from home, the task of juggling children's home schooling, completing their own work tasks, internet access problems, and supporting vulnerable/elderly family members can seem overwhelming and stressful. And for those WONDERFUL FRONTLINE HEALTH CARE workers, supporting staff and other essential workers there is the stress and emotional impact of their work added to the concerns above. In addition, all of these issues can stretch relationships and lower tolerance. This morning I received an email addressing the impact of many of those stressors on psychologist in America. The writer advocated taking a 'TRIAGE' approach to anxiety. It seems to me this me this might be a very helpful way for all people to gain a foothold in how to think about and organise so many competing demands and changes - so here is how she described it:- Using a Triage Process Triage is a medical term, used to sort out degrees of seriousness. Imagine a battlefield that is filled with wounded soldiers. You are the medic who walks among the wounded, quickly ranking the level of injury. Traditionally, triage uses 3 levels of prioritizing: Emergent: Think emergency room, 911-quality critical issues that need first attention now. Urgent: Pressing concerns that need care soon, but are not considered life or death right now. Non-urgent: Conditions that are real, but can wait. Steps to take: 1. Make a list of all your problems, especially those keeping you awake at night or causing you to feel hopeless & helpless. Sort them into the three levels as best you can. Which are problems that you can impact (do something about) and which are out of your grasp? Stick with those that that you can achieve and that will make an immediate difference. 2. Focus on resolving only the EMERGENT and URGENT issues on your list first. This may take days or weeks. Some may take a bit longer but stay focused and keep taking action daily towards resolution. Acknowledge yourself for your persistence and resilience in working your way through such unexpected and difficult events. And remember to find at least a couple of things to be grateful for each day. 3. Then turn to the non-urgent issues. AND THROUGH IT ALL REMEMBER TO BREATH. Wishing you all well, Trish
