22.01.2022 New sign language interpreting service The Department of health announced that as of November, older Australians who are deaf, deafblind, or hard of hearing, and who do not have access to interpreting services through aged care programs or the NDIS National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), can now access up to 40 hours per year of free sign language interpreting services for daily activities such as: family/social events, banking, moving/selling house, dealing with agencie...s/advisors etc. These services are available face-to-face and by video remote. 09.01.2022 Disability Royal Commission: Input into the Quality and Safeguards Issues Paper by 1 February 2021 The Disability Royal Commission is seeking input from people with disability, representative organisations, advocates, and the public concerning gaps in safeguards and quality services. The call for information comes as the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability released its ‘Safeguards and Quality Issues Paper’ on November 18 2...020. The paper addresses informal safeguards including self-advocacy and trusted relationships, and formal safeguards including legislative and administrative processes. Quality services includes those with a focus on providing positive outcomes for the people who use them. The Royal Commission is seeking to learn about the experience of violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with disability from birth to end of life. In particular, the Commission wants to examine the experiences of First Nations people with disability and culturally and linguistically diverse people with disability, as well as children and young people’s experiences. Today we share Ismail’s journey from injury, to rehabilitation to safely returning to driving. Ismail was involved in a motor vehicle accident (MVA) in 2018, resulting in head, vision, spinal and other orthopaedic injuries. After a long period of rehabilitation, Ishmail was motivated to return to driving.
