25.01.2022 While The #LocalUpdate has taken a break for a few weeks that doesn't mean you have to miss out. You can find old episodes of the podcast on the website. We’ll be back with a whole lot of brand new episodes in season 3, kicking off September 2 at 9am

25.01.2022 I’m yet to lock in my guest for next weeks episode of The #LocalUpdate. Hit me up if you have a recommendation

21.01.2022 At the start of the year, when I wrote this article about racism and ignorance, the reaction from non-indigenous residence of the #Ngaanyatjarra lands of Western Australia was out of control. Community members were outraged at my suggestion that even as people working on those lands we often miss the point, we’re at times disrespectful and often out to get what we want rather than listen to the traditional owners and assist them in the work they want to do. Today I read in #...TheGuardian that Rio Tinto has blown up a series of 46,000-year-old sacred sites, all so they can extend a mine in remote WA. The region was the only known record of continuous human existence in remote Australia through the ice ages. This action, blowing up the sacred sites, took place despite Rio Tinto having worked in the region for many years. It happened while the organisation supposedly had local indigenous cultural liaison officers on board and despite being required to pay the locals to rent the site from them ostensibly. Yeah, we work hard to do the right thing by the locals don't we, we’re not out to line our pockets. At the very least these idiots should be kicked off the land, I'd argue in fact that they should be locked up for a very long time. https://www.indimedia.com.au/in-goodes-we-trust

19.01.2022 In this weeks episode of my podcast, The #LocalUpdate, Graham Farram was reading Australian poems. After we published the episode Graham returned to me having found an absolute treasure that is perfect for the end of This years #NAIDOC Week. NAIDOC or National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee week is usually observed in July but, due to the impact of Covid, was moved this year to November. Graham is an indigenous man who is a recognised guest on Yuin country, accepted by the locals.

18.01.2022 This week on The #LocalUpdate we hand the reigns back to our history buff Graham Farram. Graham looks through the history of Bega’s Doctors from the origins of the town in the mid 19th century through to 1930. The clock tower erected in Dr Evershed’s honour is shown on the front page of this podcast and can be seen on the corner of Gipps St and Carp St in the centre of Bega.

16.01.2022 This week on The #LocalUpdate it's all about community spirit. Two years after the Tathra fires David Winkworth started a community mailing list in Kalaru. Winkworth says the newsletter started in the interest of getting fire information out to locals and perhaps working bees to help some people get their places into a safer state. 12 months on the newsletter has morphed and grown into a community paper of sorts looking at local stories and issues that matter.

15.01.2022 This week on The #LocalUpdate I’m joined by world renowned local singer song writer Daniel Champagne. Dan’s brand new album, released today, is Trying to hold the Setting Sun. We talk song writing, touring and entertaining yourself in iso.

14.01.2022 This week on The #LocalUpdate, we catch up with Christine Welsh from Sapphire Community Pantry. With Homelessness Week on the horizon, this is a reminder of the powerful work done by those in the Pantry and an invitation to you to do what you can to support their work.

14.01.2022 This week on The #LocalUpdate we catch up with local muso Matt Preo. Matt has been a part of the furniture of the main street of Bega for most of my life, busking outside the bank most days. He's also arguably the reason I play this game of radio and podcasting. As a young man Matt invited me in to help out on his weekly country music program on Bega's community station 93.7 Edge FM Bega Community Radio Station. I remember as an eight year old having the realisation that this was something I'd like to do with my life. On this episode we talk to Matt about his new album Hometown.

14.01.2022 This week on The #LocalUpdate we return to the community of Candelo. This time we’re catching up with Katie Bourke and Robyn Martin, two of the members of an amazing new local band, The New Graces. These ladies, along with their friend Melanie Horsnell, have recently been recognised for the quality of their debut release with the album topping country music charts nationally in its first week of release.

12.01.2022 This week on The #LocalUpdate we’re reducing our contribution to landfill by visiting our local Repair Cafe. David Neyle is the coordinator of Bega Valley Repair Cafe; I caught up with him recently

11.01.2022 Christine Welsh has been listed as a finalist in the NSW and ACT Regional Achievement and Community Awards After an incredibly hard year in the Bega Valley it’s fantastic to see Chris recognised for a summer of hard work. You can vote for Chris as many times as you like, vote here... http://bit.ly/NSWRACA20_PeoplesChoice

09.01.2022 This week on The #LocalUpdate we’re going batty. I'm catching up with Hugh Pitty the convener of the Friends of Glebe Wetlands to find out about the bat colony in the park.

09.01.2022 This Week on The #LocalUpdate, with COVID restrictions easing slightly around the country Bega Pioneers' Museum is open to the public again finally. We meet Bega Historical Society president Peter Rogers to learn more about his life and the Museum.

08.01.2022 On today's episode of The #LocalUpdate we’re talking Eels with local legend Tim Whitaker. Tim’s fascination with these critters started when he found one in his Yabbie trap.

08.01.2022 Next Time, on The #LocalUpdate, we Catch up with local country trio The New Graces. Despite the impact Covid is having on creative industries around the world Robyn, Kate and Melanie have done an amazing job on the release and promotion of their debut album. 'Seasons' is currently sitting at the top of a lot of country music charts including the major one from ARIA. #TheNewGraces are my guests on this weeks episode https://www.indimedia.com.au/category/podcast

04.01.2022 Don't forget that Potoroo Palace Native Animal Sanctuary opened again today after #BlackSummer2020 and #COVID.

03.01.2022 On todays #LocalUpdate we catch up with Julie Davies and Geoffrey Grigg from the SCPA - South East Producers. In the coming weeks the seed Savers associated with SCPA are going to run a collection drive, asking locals to contribute seedlings to assist those who lost their gardens in the recent fires. We learn how you can get involved in that seed drive and a bit about what the SCPA is all about.

02.01.2022 After fire gutted the Old Bega Hospital in 2004 the Bega Valley lost a valuable community centre. The centre was home to day care services, a community kitchen, the local weavers and potters, music groups, theatre groups, a photographic studio, the list goes on. On this weeks The #LocalUpdate we talk to Val Little and Richard Bomford from Friends of the Old Bega Hospital. After 16 years of hard work the committee have recently had the fantastic news that the state government will offer the financial support needed to see the building get a new roof.

02.01.2022 This week on The #LocalUpdate we recognise the life of Arthur Clifford Evershed, one of Dr Evershed's children. With Remembrance day around the corner and covid restrictions playing havoc on any ceremonies it was nice to learn that Robyn Evershed the Great, Great Granddaughter of Dr Evershed was visiting Bega this week to donate some war medals to the Bega Pioneers Museum. This episode is recorded in the foyer of Bega Pioneers museum as the hand over ceremony was taking place.

02.01.2022 This week on The #LocalUpdate Graham is off to Lochiel to tell the story of George Trad... or was that Tradd? I'm headed to Tathra where a group of determined locals have turned two years of discussions and paperwork into a soon to flourish Tathra Community Garden, on the beach front. Jamie Shaw is the treasurer of the community group, and, he tells me the events around bushfires and covid have seen a growth in interest in people being actively involved in something in their community.
