25.01.2022 Its been a tough year and we could all use some fun. How about catching a 1kg trout from a suburban lake! Stay tuned for details....

24.01.2022 Simon and Minh enjoyed the Northern Territory heat recently during an aquatic fauna survey in the Gulf of Carpentaria. A contracted river and struggling fauna reminds us how harsh this environmental can be but how resilient the life within it is.

24.01.2022 Over the last year we've been working on several non-lethal methods for assessing metal uptake in fish. Historically, fish are destroyed for a few grams of tissue which is retained for analysis. We believe there is a better way. Here is a video and a couple of pictures of one of the sample types we are trialing. By using the boat electrofisher we are able to stun Barramundi before taking a series of samples from each fish in under one minute and releasing the fish alive. We'll be able to share the results by the end of the year. King Ash Bay

23.01.2022 Another field team update from Simon and Minh who are working around the Sir Edward Pellew Islands, NT, collecting samples for tissue analysis to monitor metal levels in the environment. The monitoring includes fish, crabs and molluscs (e.g. oysters, longbums and mud clams) which are important bush tucker and popular with recreational fishers.

23.01.2022 Only two weeks out until Austin Lake in South Yunderup is stocked with Rainbow Trout. Thanks to the efforts of lots of people we managed to pull the project from the ashes after restrictions on meetings in public places were lifted only a few months ago. The project was funded through the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund (RFIF) but couldn't have gone ahead without the support of the Shire of Murray and Wolfdene for allowing access and Recfishwest for coordinating the fishing event. Huge effort also by Aquatic Life Industries for rearing the fingerlings for 12 months and donating the fish. 23.01.2022 South-west aquatic fauna survey last week. Lots of fish, amphibians and crayfish and the odd tiger snake!

22.01.2022 Our ROV has been getting plenty of water time including completion of a successful survey of subsea infrastructure in the Pilbara.

22.01.2022 Ten days into 2020 and the car is packed up for our second field survey for the new year. Going to be a big year for IPE!

21.01.2022 Attended the conference of the Australian Society for Fish Biology over the weekend and shared the finding of the introduced Molly (Poecilia latipinna) in the Pilbara. Thanks to Maggie Watson for capturing the talk.

20.01.2022 Despite some issues traveling across borders in May, sampling hasnt stopped in northern Aus. With communities closed in the NT we drove a hundred kilometres without seeing another car.

20.01.2022 Our dependable Hilux just couldn't get us everywhere we needed to go during a macroinvertebrate survey in the Northern Territory. Amazing time of year to fly across Gulf of Carpentaria country.

19.01.2022 Our stand ready to go at the Borroloola show and rodeo.

18.01.2022 We cant thank the people of Borroloola and the McArthur River area enough for sharing their knowledge on food, medicine and ceremony plants. The bush walk and talks were a great experience. James was offered a nut which turned out to be incredibly bitter and was met with plenty of laughter. I'm sure this practical joke has gone on for thousands of years. Definitely one of the most rewarding projects we've ever worked on!

18.01.2022 We witnessed the harsher side of nature while diving off Perth on the weekend as a sea lion hunted and methodically killed a large turtle for food. To witness this while in the water and only meters away was a privilege and something we will never forget. Thankfully, Paul Mckeown jumped in with his phone and got some footage which is in the link below. https://youtu.be/dVQXKqr8_2c

18.01.2022 Simon and Minh set the record for the number of bogs in a single day on tidal flats in the Gulf of Carpentaria today. Glad you weren't any later getting the buggy out lads or you would have tested whether the 6 wheeler actually floated!

18.01.2022 Great to be back in the Northern Territory for the first this year. The country is green and there is still plenty of water around. We have spent several days collecting bush food plants for analysis and will be working with people from the Borroloola area again soon to collect more information on traditional food and medicine plants.

17.01.2022 Eleven years ago today we headed off on our first field survey as Indo-Pacific Environmental into remote Northern Territory. We sold a car to buy nets, borrowed boats to get us on the water and found ways to get the job done. It was stressful, hot and unfamiliar but ridiculously exciting exploring this new river. Possibly a bit relaxed on the personal protective equipment back then though....

15.01.2022 We are declaring war on the Molly! After finding the feral fish in the Fortescue River this year we are going to attempt to remove the species before it becomes widespread in this pristine river. Its the furthest north a feral fish species has been recorded in WA. Its a threat to biodiversity and reduces the natural value of this system. We're hoping to working with industry, Government and community groups to spread the message for people not to release pet fish into native rivers.

15.01.2022 After 6 months of renos we have moved into our new HQ. More photos to come but pretty much everything that makes a building was repaired or replaced. Great to be able to re-purpose an amazing old building and stop it from ending up as landfill.

14.01.2022 Nothing like working remote. Limmen and Robinson River sampling provided lots of challenging driving but the Hilux made it through and back like it always does. Amazing time of year to be in the Territory.

14.01.2022 Received an early Christmas present today.....an ROV. Excited about what we can explore and how we can apply new tech in our survey programs.

13.01.2022 James and Mike made it home safely after sampling the Limmen and Robinson Rivers, NT. Some heavy rain meant the rivers jumped by a few metres over night and several hundred kilometres of dirt track turned to mud. The country greens up within days of some rain and the fauna race to feed up and find that special someone to make a family with.

11.01.2022 First field trip for 2018 went well in the Pilbara. The first three days were wet, cold and windy and there were waves on Ophthalmia Dam! Of course we didn't pack warm jumpers as the week before was 45 degrees and humid. We went back on the hunt for the introduced molly and found where they are holding out through the dry season. They've won this round but we are working on a strategy for their removal.

11.01.2022 Thanks to Damo, Cody and Mathias from the li-Anthawirriyarra Sea Ranger Unit for the help during the week catching sawfish in the McArthur River. We tagged a few young of the year but cool water meant the saltwater crocs were out and very friendly at times. Most of our mooring floats have been chewed as well as a couple of receivers but everything is still functioning.

11.01.2022 All our acoustic receivers survived the McArthur River wet season and results are coming in. Tagging sawfish and barramundi will continue in July. Borroloola School King Ash Bay

11.01.2022 A few snaps from a very long day in the glamorous life of an aquatic biologist working in remote northern Australia. Days like this may test us but never our passion for the amazing and diverse life that resides in these rivers.

10.01.2022 We strive to be well equipped and ready to work. So we thought wed get some more boats! Yes theyre fibreglass but after working out of aluminum boats for 20 years there is no comparison for sea handling and crew comfort. Both are commercially registered and ready for marine survey work. We look forward to assisting our research partners and clients.

10.01.2022 Poster showing fish of the McArthur River. We're hoping to have posters in local language names finished soon!

10.01.2022 Great to be at the Borroloola Rodeo speaking with community. Come have a chat and grab a free lure!

09.01.2022 Our trout stocking project could not have been any better. Hundreds of happy families enjoying time together outside catching a fish. We thank all those involved for their support on the long weekend. Two weeks on and visitation to the lake is still high with fish being caught.

07.01.2022 Its been a busy couple of months with back to back field work. The wet season in the Gulf of Carpentaria was short but rainfall was high this year. The rivers peaked and dropped quickly but there was still plenty of fish moving in the survey of the McArthur River in May.

05.01.2022 And the road trip to their new lake begins for our trout. During the release we were met by a number of residents of Austin Lake. Your enthusiasm for the project make the hard work worth it. And its not even the long weekend!

04.01.2022 Despite some issues traveling across borders in May, sampling hasn't stopped in northern Aus. With communities closed in the NT we drove a hundred kilometres without seeing another car.

04.01.2022 Amazing how attitudes and understanding of our environment can change over time. A friend sent us this exert from the Wonder Book of Knowledge from 1959 about the Great Barrier Reef and its activities. Interesting that some of the text was provided by a Government department of the day!

02.01.2022 Dry season survey work in northern Australia has kept us in the bush and out of trouble. The race is on to complete a busy field schedule as bets are on for an early wet.

02.01.2022 Sampling during December in the Kimberley was like working in an oven. 47 degrees and plastic waders aren't a great combo as we sampled refuge waterholes out of Fitzroy Crossing. Water was super low and fauna were just holding on for the rain.

02.01.2022 Everyone is back in Perth safely after another busy year in the field and looking forward to a break in the coming weeks. Heres a few photos from the last field trip for 2017 from the Northern Territory.

01.01.2022 Its hard to find sawfish art but our collection is growing. These are a few decorating our office.

01.01.2022 It was bound to happen to our newly painted building. We just wish it was done by someone who had some actual artistic talent!
