25.01.2022 If you're looking for something to do in this miserable weather... :)

24.01.2022 We are so proud of our scholar Nicole Chaffey who has been awarded an opportunity with 'NSW Visual Arts Aboriginal Emerging Leadership Program'. This is to allow Regional and Sydney-based Aboriginal curators to meet for the first time, with assistancve from ‘Museums & Galleries of NSW’. It’s part of a larger NSW Visual Arts Aboriginal Emerging Leadership Program involving regional galleries at Lake Macquarie, Goulburn, Lismore and the Western Plain Cultural Centre at Dubbo.... As a mentee, Nicole spent a heady but ultimately satisfying week in Sydney packed with backstage collections tours, up close and personals with Sydney-based Aboriginal curators and even managed to fit in highlights of the Biennale of Sydney, all in four days. Please click on the link below to read more about Nicole's success! Nicole has recently completed her Industry Scholarship with UON Art Gallery, and has continued to shine by expanding her horizons by sourcing opportunities! These are the benefits of being an Industry Scholar! If you, or anyone you know on the IS Program has some 'good news' stories that we need to share, please email us at: [email protected]

To be in the running you will need to tag yourself in a photo, type your name in the comments section, and encourage your mates to "vote" for you. Most likes wins - EASY! - CAPTION THIS - Prize #2 will be awarded to the scholar who has the funniest caption on our "Caption This" photo. The best caption wins (please remember that anything deemed inappropriate will be deleted). These competitions are open to CURRENT Industry Scholars only. Ward 3 byelection which will likely be held next February, but the former Lambton High School captain is currently the most strongly supported. Only residents of Newcastle’s Ward 3 will have to vote at such an election. That i...ncludes an area essentially bordered by Kotara, New Lambton, Waratah and Jesmond. http://www.theherald.com.au//favourite-emerges-for-ward-/

06.01.2022 The Newcastle Herald is loving our Industry Scholars in today's edition! Aboriginal Flood Research Four years ago, University of Newcastle student Alex Devlin applied for a new scholarship for Indigenous students funded by resource company Coal & Allied.... Alex, who was studying Civil Engineering was awarded the scholarship and undertook industry placements with Coal & Allied throughout his degree. On top of his scholarship he was also recently awarded the prestigious Ron Yates Award, an award that recognizes leadership skills as part of UoN's Industry scholarships Program. The award is sponsored by Lendlease and honours the memory of Ron Yates, who was an Industry champion of the University's industry placement program. As part of his studies Alex learnt that flood records are important to engineers but that records in the Hunter only date back to 1820. As the recorded history of floods is relatively short, there is a lot of uncertainty in current estimates. Civil Engineering is such a defined science with not much room for an ancient culture but it was a sentence I read in my water engineering course that said something like measuring of floods started in 1898 and records of floods only go back to 1820 in the Hunter. When I became aware of that, I thought Aboriginal people have been here well before 1820, why can't their knowledge be recognized and included," mused Alex. This question became the focus of his recently completed research thesis as part of his final year project. By investigating local Aboriginal Dreaming stories and knowledge prior to British settlement, Alex was able to find information that he included in his analysis to effectively increase the length of records. This is the first time that Traditional Aboriginal Knowledge has been used in flood frequency analysis and it's positive influence has created an opportunity in the future for it's application to use all over Australia. Congratulations Alex! :)
