16.01.2022 Episode 2 of an interesting project we have been working on over the past few weeks.

14.01.2022 I am singing in a room is a project I've wanted to do for a long time, inspired by the technique used by Alvin Lucier’s landmark avant-garde piece I am sitting ...in a room (1969).This technique involves making a recording in a space, replaying that recording straight away through a small speaker, and then re-recording this sound. This is done again and again, until the natural frequencies of the room take over, and the song becomes a ghost or memory of itself. It can be a challenging listen, but an absolutely fascinating way to hear how the natural acoustics of places break down and shape sound. To try this technique out, I'm recording some songs, or fragments of songs, inspired by space, memory and transience, in locations around Canberra. When I got around to doing it with just an acoustic guitar and voice, it struck me as gradually listening to a folk song metamorphosise into a an abstract shoegaze-esque soundscape This one comes from the shell of the Yale-Columbia telescope at Stromlo Observatory, just on the outskirts of Canberra's residential zone. It was burned out in the bushfires of 2003 and has been kept as a beautiful ruin, in the middle of the observatory that's still going strong and has some great public education events alongside it's research program. They were also incredibly generous in letting me use the space so easily, as I know they've been supportive of other artists using it too. We did it on a freezing cold winter's evening, when the wind just wouldn't die. Again, we weren't sure whether it would work, especially as the wind shaped the sound of the space in its own way, but soon after we finished the recording, we realised that the wind is what made the sound so special. Again, I used or tailored a fragment of a song I've been writing to the space, thinking about being in a telescope that once focussed on the moons of Saturn and Jupiter, on a mountaintop, above a valley, while the sun sets - in a literal sense, and in a more metaphorical sense, in a phase where many of us seem to be reconsidering what we want, and what kind of future to choose. I really appreciate you watching - thanks for tuning in, and letting me know what you think of this project. And do come along next week, if you can! This is thanks to the support of the Where You Are festival, and the ACT Government.
