22.01.2022 "My posture's terrible isn't it?!" This is something I hear almost every time I tell clients I am going to have a look at how they are standing. And while posture can play a role in someone's discomfort, its not the be all and end all. ... Alot of the time its not about how we hold ourselves. Its about how long we hold ourselves in the same position. Why? Ischaemia Put simply, ischaemia is a lack of blood flow to tissues, like your muscles. When fresh blood doesn't flow to an area, thanks to a lack of movement, acids build up in that area. When acids build up, little danger sensors (nociceptors) in the area send signals to the brain saying "danger, there's acid here". We can experience this as discomfort, which makes us move around - great work body! If we don't move for long enough, and other conditions contribute (see coming post "What a pain"), we can experience pain. So any posture held for an extended period without movement isn't the best for the health of our tissue.
