18.01.2022 BMW Motorrad Australia is unveiling a new motorcycle tomorrow, and while details are scarce, it is believed to be a more track-focused version of the brand's S 1000 RR sportsbike. Hints from the company on social media, as well as the uncovering of trademark filings has many suspecting the new bike will be dubbed M 1000 RR, capitalising on the Bavarian brand's flagship M Performance moniker. We've been staring at this single smokey image for a while, and we can almost make ...out winglets hanging off the front fairing, but we'll have to wait for tomorrow's online unveiling to give you the full details. 03.01.2022 Hi folks, what the hell happened there? Christmas you say? Already? It’s often said (mostly by wrinklies) that time accelerates as you get older. I reckon it’s sorta true. But, only sorta. Remember how long summer holidays seemed when you were a kid? Endless hazy days, either spent sweating your nuts off, or luxuriating on a beach/lake/pool/dam or playing under the now terribly politically incorrect sprinkler. Remember being itchy from that? Remember standing on a bee? Remem...ber thinking adults must be incredibly thirsty? Remember Dennis Lillee, Jeff Thomson and the havoc they wreaked, all with a hair-chested bravado that made you feel like masculinity was in good hands? All of it set to the familiar soundtrack of the ABC Test coverage, accompanied by the sporadic bang of a sprung wire door on a painted wooden jamb? Of course you do. Well, this just in... You’re old and knackered, just like me. The hidden truth about all that is, that those holidays spent in childhood indeed were longer. Like three weeks longer than the maximum you get now. It’s not about accelerating time. It’s about not having as much. Or, more precisely, setting up doctrines and practices that result in less left over. Hands up if you are guilty of this. Okay, you can put them down now. I reckon, if I had six or seven weeks off over the summer now, well it would feel endless and free, just as it did then. Especially when all I had to think about was treehouses and whether to play tippity run or running wicket. Yes, for us drones, the maths are there. We work too long and too hard to ever really capture that simple easy thing that summer once was. That’s where summer motorcycling comes in as an important antidote to the sort of pressure that working people are under. Some of it self-inflicted, some of it built by a world gone completely mad. Some of it neither. Forgive me for bordering on waxing lyrical here. You might want to run out to the laundry and grab a sick bucket right about now. Somehow, getting aboard a motorcycle in the morning of one of those days where the cicadas seem to have got up extra early and strapping on a helmet, brings back those summer memories, and the relaxed, unhurried nature of an Australian kid-summer. Whether you are setting off for a destination that will take all of that day and possibly longer, or a two-hour strop with a coffee in the middle, the feeling is the same. It’s your time, you are going to do what you want. No bosses, no kids, no rules. You know that feeling. You don’t even finish that cup of tea before you leave the house, such is the tremor of excitement as you shut the front door. Yep, you’re getting it now. Well, I’m gonna make that time this summer. The bike will be on high rotation over this break, I’m making a pact with happiness. And, there can be no doubt, I’ll be saner and better company for it. Waddya reckon? You in? Cheers, Snaggy.
