23.01.2022 As Term 1 comes to an end, it's with gratitude that we reflect on the record number of schools we've been privileged to work with, including students, teachers & parents. Happy holidays to each and every one of you Peace, love & kindness from Marty & Carley

22.01.2022 Worth a reminder...YouTube is 17+ as a suggested rating. This particular graphic video is by a hugely popular artist so is likely to come up as a "suggested" video if your child watches other similar music videos! Two things to consider: #1 YouTube Kids App is a much better option for as long as you possibly can. Has built in filtering plus the option of enabling certain channels or specific videos. You can even create individual profiles for different children at different ...ages. #2 YouTube does have a "Restricted mode" that can be enabled. Please see my video on a separate post with more info, including instructions how to turn on restricted mode.

22.01.2022 Please tag and share this resource with all the grandparents in your life. Brand new & free online safety guide is essential reading to help keep our young people safe when in the care of grandparents. "great resource, had no idea it was available" "It’s as important as doing a first aid course or making your house kid safe"... "wow...a big wake up call" "very clear and succinctly presented" Link: https://www.esafety.gov.au//online-safety-grandparents-car If they aren't on FB, the guide can be delivered in hardcopy to their home or downloaded as an eBook) Thanks to Office of the eSafety Commissioner

21.01.2022 We know that the average age of first exposure to pornography is well and truly before children leave primary school. Our advice to parents is to start the conversation early and be informed as much as you can. Unfortunately it's a challenge that we did not have to encounter when growing up. Peace, Love & Kindness Carley & Marty

21.01.2022 Do you catch yourself on your phone scrolling endlessly when you know it's not ideal?! (you're in the massive majority if you answered yes) As every parent has discovered, kids are like sponges absorbing everything we do (not necessarily what we say). Carley unpacks this reality that as parents or carers we are one of the most significant role models in our children’s lives, including when it comes to the use of phones and digital devices. https://www.informandempower.com.au//are-parents-hypocrite

18.01.2022 Further insights into social media app Tik Tok's unsuitability for young children. This time something you may not have considered...

17.01.2022 Was fantastic to share #SaferInternetDay with the community of St Peter's Sunshine South West - students, teachers and families. Thanks to 7NEWS Melbourne

15.01.2022 A question Carley gets asked often..."How can I support/teach/encourage my own kids to invite in joy, peace and calm...instead of grumpiness, irritability, anxiety, upset & anger?". Kids have lots of big emotions but we, as adults, can help them shift their emotions. There's actually very practical things you can teach them! Hint: these strategies also work for us grown ups

15.01.2022 Do your kids love YouTube? (silly question right!) YouTube has a stack of explicit and mature content as it is not designed for younger users. As we always suggest, supervision is key. BUT, you are also able to enable "restricted mode" which blocks most (notice how I didn't say "all") explicit and mature videos. By default this setting will be off, watch the video below for simple instructions to enable it. SOME CONSIDERATIONS:... -YouTube Kids App is highly recommended for younger users (keep it as their only access to YouTube for as long as possible) -Restricted mode is usually locked on for students using a school account -Restricted mode cannot be locked on, meaning that your child can, in theory turn it back off again (unless you use Screen Time App for Apple or Family Link for Android) -If you have YouTube App on your Smart TV, you can Google search for specific instructions to enable restricted mode TIP: have children always watch YouTube on a big screen (cast to your TV) where possible in a shared area of your home - never in bedrooms. This will allow for adult supervision whilst not having to be looking over their shoulders constantly. It also allows for lots of discussion about what they like watching. (Thanks to Ben Lannen for this)

13.01.2022 Quite possibly the most important message I share with young people in schools is the awareness that the Kids Helpline is another trusted adult that always has their back. Anytime. Any Reason. Happy 30th Birthday and keep up the amazing work Kids Helpline Official

12.01.2022 A topic that often gets put in the "too hard" or "not my child" basket. But No. This is an absolute must for parents to be informed about. We urge every parent to start, and continue, this vital conversation with your children.

10.01.2022 Carley shares top tips (that she promises work!) for your family to better manage those abundance of 'tricky' feelings...particularly if you're in our Victorian lockdown 3.0. As always, no judgment, just practical solutions you can try out in your home to navigate challenging times.

06.01.2022 **New Vanish mode in Messenger** Disappearing message apps (ie. Snapchat) have long been recognised for increased risk levels of both bullying and intimate images sharing by young people...."it's only there for 5sec, no one's going to see it!". Please be aware that Messenger (Facebook and Instagram's merged platform) now has "vanish" mode hidden away as a new feature. This is a timely reminder to have open discussions with your young people about the internet being a "public & permanent" place and the risks of sharing anything via "disappearing messages".

06.01.2022 Fantastic to be working with the community of St Leonard's Primary School Glen Waverley once again in 2021. As much as webinars are here to stay, nothing beats a "face to face" presentation for that human experience. PLK

05.01.2022 "I know who the impostor is!" "I just got voted off and I'm not even the imposter!" Is the multiplayer game 'Among Us' all the rage in your house this holiday season? ... Check out our 2min, easy to read parent guide: https://www.informandempower.com.au/p/among-us-parent-guide

05.01.2022 Among the plethora of inappropriate content on Tik Tik, these "challenges" continue to be a major concern and risk for young people using the app. It's one of many reasons we suggest Tik Tok is not a safe app for any primary school students to be using. Kudos to those parents and families who have made the rather unpopular choice to not allow Tik Tok. To quote Carley, "as parents and carers we need to ensure decisions we make are in line with what children NEED, not what they WANT"

05.01.2022 Highly recommend Beacon app for all parents! (& teachers) Your digital guidebook for all things digital...keeping kids safe online requires us, as adults, to be as informed as possible. *It's free to download from App Store or Play Store

04.01.2022 Green Time might be just what you and your family need these holidays to balance screen time. https://www.informandempower.com.au//green-time-vs-screen-
