16.01.2022 Happy International Day of People with Disability! Some of our Senator Jordon Steele-John's favourite community messages: "This is our day where we celebrate the resilience, diversity and power of our community, as well as acknowledging the challenges and barriers that we still face every single day. There wasn’t an official theme that resonated with me this year so instead, I asked the community what message they wanted to send today. Here’s some of my favourites "

07.01.2022 Today the NSW Parliament's Public Works Committee has tabled its report recommending actions to clean up toxic coal ash dams across NSW. It has been an interesting process to work with our Greens MLC Abigail Boyd, the Hunter Community Environment Centre, Environmental Justice Australia and last but not least our very own Coal-Ash Community Alliance to resource and participate in this inquiry. We have well and truly managed to put coal ash front and centre in the minds of pol...iticians across the political spectrum! This report recognises coal ash as toxic waste and: Acknowledges the opportunities for job creation in coal ash clean-up and supports a new industry in NSW around recycling coal ash into roads and building products. Calls for the establishment of a cross-sector taskforce to lead development of a strategy to achieve at least 80% reuse of coal ash in NSW (up from the current 20%). Acknowledges the health and environmental risks posed by coal ash dams, and calls for urgent independent investigations into the impact on nearby communities (including those around Lake Macquarie). Acknowledges the need for new regulations around the treatment and storage of coal ash and the need to clean up coal ash dumps across NSW. There is still much work to be done, but the cross-party agreement that this report represents is a very good step forward. You can read the full report here: https://bit.ly/3s55V8O.

04.01.2022 Happy International Women's Day - celebrating with the cover page of Kerala's Gender Budget 2020-21, painted by a ninth grader to illustrate the work his mother does while she keeps being introduced as "she's just a housewife, she's not working". We need more critically observing young men... and yes, we also need a gender budget!

01.01.2022 And here is a local snippet of our media coverage - please share!

01.01.2022 Dolly Parton is a great musician, but she's an even greater facilitator of education: let's make sure we follow her and support our local libraries - when have you last taken your child, grandchild, niece or nephew, or the neighbours' kids for that matter to your local library? Do they love the pink turtles as much as our granddaughters do?
