23.01.2022 We have some amazing Marebu (woven mats) available online now. All our fibre art is created by harvesting the fresh shoots of Pandanus spiralus, commonly called Pandanus palm, then stripping and drying them. Using 100% organic dyes sourced from local plants the fibre is coloured before weaving into mats and other traditional objects. #injalakarts #fibreart #naturaldyes #marebu Go to: https://www.etsy.com/au/shop/InjalakArts

22.01.2022 We’ve just uploaded new works by Graham Badari to our website! Injalak.com/shopGraham Badari’s country is Maburrinj, in the rocky escarpment country about 120 kilometres east of Gunbalanya. He draws artistic inspiration from this environment and also paints the Dreamings of his Mother Country, Djurlka, where he spent time as a young man near the outstation of Marmardawerre. He was raised by the renowned artist Djawida Nadjongorle, but like many of the artists at Gunbalany...a credits the late Thompson Yulidjirri as his greatest artistic influence. From these senior men, Badari learnt the fluid and dynamic figurative style that defines Kunwinjku painting at Injalak Arts. He began painting sporadically around 1990, but has since become part of a group of dedicated and innovative artists at Gunbalanya. His paintings show the influence of the visual language of their rock-art heritage, while remaining committed to artistic innovation. It is this beguiling balance of tensions, innovation and tradition, ancient and modern, beauty and terror, that energises Badari’s paintings. See more

20.01.2022 Various animals and plants have totemic significance to the Kunwinjku people who live in western Arnhem Land in the ‘Top End’ of Australia. The artist has painted kunj or kangaroo, which is the largest marsupial mammal in the area. The kunj is painted in the classic Kunwinjku x-ray style with internal organs showing, indicating it’s regarded as game than that of totemic significance. The cross-hatching technique used for the in-fill is called rarrk and is taken from ceremon...ial body painting designs. Kunj are herbivorous. When we talk about Kunj (kangaroos) we mean several different kinds of kangaroo: There is the Antilopine wallaroo we call the male Korlobbarr or Kandakkidj, and the female Kardayh or Karurrken. The common wallaroo we call kalkberd (male) and wolerrk (female); The agile wallaby kornobolo we call the male warradjunkal and female merlbbe; And the black wallaroo we call Barrk or Nadjinem for the male, and Djukerre for the female. The kangaroo is an important source of food for us Aboriginal people. We go out into the bush and we hunt kangaroos in the savanna woodland. And we climb into the stone country to hunt the kangaroos that live there. Also we hunt wallabies in the monsoon forests, such as the agile wallaby. Go to Injalak.com/shop to see Thommo Nganjmirra’s painting of Kunj (kangaroo) and many other art works. All our paintings come with a certificate of authenticity that also provides the story of the artwork. #injalakarts #thommonganjmirra #painting #contemporaryart

10.01.2022 Yawkyawk Djang kore Marlwon En. Water spirit dreaming at Marlwon. Yawkyawk is the Kunwinjku term used for young women but also for special female water spirits that have fish tails as shown in this painting. Sometimes they are described as ‘mermaids’ and are said to live in trees and in water in special places in western Arnhem Land. In this case the Yawkyawk are from country called Marlwon, an outstation east of Gunbalanya which is the artist’s traditional country. The spi...rits are guardians of a particular waterhole. The other elements in the painting are all related to freshwater billabongs; there are water lily leaves, two namarnkol (barramundi) and two kedjebe (filesnake). . Trevor is often at the art centre, and the last weeks he has been particularly inspired working on his artwork everyday. His work is available online. 10.01.2022 Merrill Girrabul is the daughter of established fibre artist Jill Nganjmirra. The level of skill and innovation in Merrils work is reminiscent of that of her mothers and continues a family tradition of artistry, given her grandparents were the painter Spider Namarriki, and fibre artist Wendy Wirlyuna Djogiba. . In this painting Merrill has combined her knowledge of Kunwinjku weaving techniques and the cultural significance of artefacts made from pandanus. The colours in the p...ainting are analogous to the use of natural dyes. Kunwinjku women use their knowledge of local plants to create rich dyes for their fibre art. In the centre of the painting is a Marebu (woven mat). These are traditionally valuable items, used as working surfaces, worn as skirts and used during ceremonies. Merill explains the colours also reflect the Aboriginal flag signalling the importance of fibre art to her cultural identity. In the background are the strands of pandanus, already stripped and dyed, ready to be used for weaving. Merrill has also painted Djerrh (Dilly bags). These have been made in Arnhem Land since long before there were collectors for them, and they are featured in rock art throughout the region. Djerrh usually refers to a looped and knotted string bag, used to soak the toxins from cycad nuts or cheeky yams. As Marebu they also play important roles in ceremony. Merrill has also painted Mimih spirits, the original spirit beings taught Kunwinjku people many of the skills they needed to survive in the bush including how to weave. They also taught aspects of ceremony. Mimih spirits are believed to inhabit the rocky escarpments around Gunbalanya, but because they are extremely timid, they are rarely seen by humans. They are frequently depicted in the rock art of Arnhem Land as small, dynamic figures, often shown with a range of hunting tools such as spears, spear throwers, dilly bags and fire sticks. 03.01.2022 Michael has painted Ngalyod, the Rainbow Serpent. Ngalyod is regarded as a most important ancestor spirit in West Arnhem Land and appears in various manifestations in Kunwinjku mythology. In the Dreamtime she assumed a range of animal forms including snake, kangaroo and crocodile and at times transformed herself from one to the other, or into a combination of each. It is believed that as a serpent she tunnels underground using barbed extensions from her head and the bony protuberance from her neck as aids. It is believed that Ngalyod dwells in various billabongs in Arnhem Land today, sometimes swallowing bininj (the Kunwinjku term for Aboriginal people) as punishment when they break traditional laws. . #injalakarts

01.01.2022 Inspired by the rock art of West Arnhem Land, Kunwinjku artist and @injalakarts Co-Manager Gabriel Maralngurra, references and innovates within this artistic tradition. His knowledge of stories, plants and animals are reflected in his fluent linework and highly original compositions. Gabriel describes a recent work titled Kudjewk Kulabbarl (Rock Art Style Wet Season Billabong), 2020 and the ancestrally created landscape the painting depicts: "In the Wet season water is flowi...ng everywhere. The floodlplain is full of water, there are a lot of fish. There is plenty to eat. The water python eats fish. The turtles eat little beetles that appear with the rains. The goannas and fish are eating insects like dragonflies and spiders. Everything is full of life. Yawk Yawk (water spirits) appear in the sacred waterholes which have filled up. The spirits start to roam in the country. They have new growth."
