02.01.2022 Police in Karachi, Pakistan, are training for a new armed rollerblading unit to fight crime. Comprised of 10 men and 10 women, the team is part of ‘an innovative approach’ to combatting assailants who often get away on motorcycles and bikes. The unit will officially deploy in March.
01.01.2022 On the only occasion I was documented skating the old 10 foot vert ramp at Prahran, Ryan Farrall filmed me slide down the banister with a trick not many of the ...people I currently roll with have seen me do down a rail. This has been my local skatepark my whole life; I was 12 years old when I first climbed these stairs and 22 years old on this occasion, and now at age 39 I’ve been hitting up a weekly Daylight Savings rollerblader session at the venue for about a decade and a half. The old, wide, shallow bowl of the 1980’s was replaced long ago with a street course I’ve never burned out on, and the former vert ramp was replaced with a 14 foot one but is now rarely used. To my knowledge I’m the only person to ever throw a maneuver down the stairs of the current vert ramp and one of three people to hit the rail on the old one; Wollongong’s Ian Brown was first with a shifty - respect to him. I swear Brock Midgley once did it too though he doesn’t remember. Tight U-turn into 2 feet of run up for a steep front noogan in a new pair of K2 Nemesis boots with Fiziks frames, as featured in an ad for K2 Skates in the 2004 film, Brown Renegade, which is viewable on Vimeo. If you wanna see the vert ramp skated properly, my pal Shane Yost, aged 43 and the first in history to ever roll away from a 1260 in any action sport on anything, will be having a play on it at tonight’s weekly Thursday session. Those familiar with Shane know that his moves are a sight for sore eyes and these special occasions are not to be missed. We’re fortunate that one of the world’s finest - ever and now - still rolls at all, and if I have anything to do with it he’ll leave tonight with some new trick under his belt because I’m all about progression. That and the mantra of course; skate street like it’s park and park like it’s street. Another Melbourne covid lockdown just lifted this morning, the weather will be amazing and Daylight Savings leaves us with 6 more Thursday sessions this season.
