24.01.2022 Handstand in Ancient Yoga Traditions: The "Yogsana - Jaina" is a Jain text from 1768 A.D. that lists 108 asanas. Handstand (Vrksasana) is listed as posture number 46. ... Since Mark Singleton published "Yoga Body", the trend is for people to assume that handstand was introduced by Krishnamacharya in the 1930s from his interaction with western gymnastics at the Mysore Palace. James Mallinson, while admiring Singletons scholarship, has questioned this view in an interview. But outside of this, many of Singletons assumptions have gone unchallenged. This document clearly indicates that handstand practice was a part of the yoga tradition for centuries prior to Krishnamacharya. The text also includes chaturanga dandasana and an unsupported headstand. In this post I am transitioning from Vrksasana to Koundinyasana. While in Iyengars teaching the transition is done from headstand, Manu Jois explained that he was originally taught all the arm balances from handstand by Patthabi Jois. So, I guess there are no rules; just open ended exploration, innovation and some ancient road maps. Its not commonly known that asana practice was a part of the Jain religion. That aspect seems to be neglected in the modern interpretation of Jainism. The full manuscript is currently an unpublished research project through the Kaivalydhama Yoga Institute in India. #jamesmallinson #marksingleton #yogahistory #handstand#vrksasana . . . . . . . #perthyoga #yogaperth #yogaaustralia #iyengaryoga#yogaphysio #yogaphysiotherapy #innerfocusphysio#physioyoga #physio #yogatherapy #physiotherapyyoga#yogascience #perth #perthlife#perthisok #perthfitness #perthphysio #ashtangaperth #yogatherapy #perthvegan#clinicalyoga #perthmovement #movementculture#perthfitfam

19.01.2022 What is self-efficacy and why does it matter in pain? In this article Lee Schneider answers this question and tries to explain it within a framework that is fairly cutting edge in the world of neuroscience, pain and Physio: predictive processing. I hope you guys get something from it!

19.01.2022 Task orientated training for Parkinsons Disease. Working with one of our dedicated clients @innerfocusphysiotherapy. * Example: using movement tasks to develop skill in counter balance and multi-tasking. Task orientated training requires the participant to solve problems, this encourages cognitive engagement and body awareness.

18.01.2022 Lets see if Scott cant work his magic and sort this shoulder and neck out. Nice sunny day for some yoga therapy.

16.01.2022 Self Efficacy and the Bayesian Brain: In 2008 when I had chronic widespread pain, I had pain in both wrists that limited writing, typing, using a mouse, and I was subsequently unable to work. My self efficacy was undermined because of the beliefs I had aquired from interacting with health care providers that used structural explanations and reinforced catastrophic thinking.... After I jettisoned the medical model and starting using yoga and mindfulness as tools, I inadvertently reconceptualised many movements. My brains predictions about when to experience pain changed. For example, weight bearing in Mayurasana through the wrist was taught to me in a reassuring way- i expected it to be benefical (both implicitly and explicitly) instead of harmful. Among many other things (beyond the scope of this post), I was taught strategies to relax, and also changed my perspective. Lee Schneider has written a great, well referenced article linking the concept of self efficacy with predictive processing, pain science and movement/mindfulness approaches to management. Lee has the knack of writing in a very simple, easy to understand way. Predictive processing is very complex, so for an easy to understand introduction, click the link below for the full article: https://www.innerfocusphysio.com.au/blog/selfefficacy #painscience #predictiveprocessing #bayesianbrain #innerfocusphysio #physioperth #perthmovement #yogaperth #yogatherapy #mayurasana #iyengaryoga #clinicalyoga

16.01.2022 Clinicians want to do the best for their patients. But they often believe in treatments even when the evidence shows they dont work. Despite limited evidence of their efficacy, most back pain treatments are funded by Medicare, costing taxpayers about $4.8 billion a year. Treatments proven to work like yoga are not subsidised. We waste billions."...

04.01.2022 Great video on pain science. Recommended

04.01.2022 After all the longitudinal cohort studies, randomized control trials and systematic reviews it still comes back to this simple mantra when dealing with most musculoskeletal pains and injuries. Keep calm and keep moving Keep calm: most aches and pains are normal and will resolve with time. That is, they have good natural history. In the mean time, try to keep calm and focus on what you can do, rather than worrying about what you cant.... Keep moving: Ultimately the body has to move and exploring movement may help you to get you back to your baseline quicker. Anecdotally, Ive found that getting on the mat, moving around and exploring the pain a little can go a long way in easing the odd discomfort. Keeping calm and keeping moving when you have pain is not always a simple thing to do. Its a skill and requires some practice and patience. If you want some help in building some independence and skill in managing your own pain, get in touch. #physiotherapy #physioperth #yogaphysio #yogatherapyperth #clinicalyoga #movementculture #perthmovement See more
