22.01.2022 Inner Ignite loves being able to make parents happy! We are working with this mum to help her 17 year old daughter get eligibility to the National Disability Insurance Scheme. After this client was not eligible first time around, Inner Ignite has assisted to complete an online Access Request Form which is very user friendly and much easier than using a paper based form.... Did you know as of 27 April 2020, NDIS introduced an online Access Request Form? 22.01.2022 So excited to announce that my new business, Inner Ignite is now officially open! Inner Ignite is a new disability service that provides mentoring and peer support, through lived experience of disability, for school children and young adults with Cerebral Palsy and physical disabilities. After working in the disability sector for 15 years and living with Cerebral Palsy myself, I created Inner Ignite as a unique service to help children with disabilities reach their full p...otential. Living with a disability shouldn't be a barrier to achieving your goals and living a happy and fulfilled life. Inner Ignite offers practical on-the-ground mentoring, peer support, skills development and training services to assist clients to get the best outcomes from their NDIS plans and achieve their goals. Services are available in North Brisbane and Pine Rivers Shire areas and there is immediate capacity for new referrals. 22.01.2022 Here is a little bit more about Inner Ignite's Founding Director, Andrea Harrington... Upon finishing primary school, Andrea attended St Rita's College in Clayfield. Located at the top of a steep hill, Hunters Lane and with lots of stairs to navigate, Andrea faced physical challenges every day attending high school. During high school, Andrea had two major surgeries to lengthen her ankle tendons and hip flexors, being told by her orthopaedic specialist that without these surg...eries, she may have required a wheelchair from a teenager into adult life. Despite time off for surgeries and recovery, Andrea graduated from high school in 1995 and went on to study Human Services at Queensland University of Technology. Andrea worked part-time while at university and also volunteered with the Cerebral Palsy League of Qld (now known as CPL), being determined that her physical disability would not be a barrier to living her best life. Andrea graduated with Honours from QUT in 1999 and started her career with Queensland Council of Carers supporting carers and families, which is work she has continued to be passionate about. Inner Ignite can provide services to young people and their families/carers through peer support and mentoring in navigating challenges from primary school to high school. Plus, assist young people to explore vocational options when finishing school to help them achieve their potential. In her spare time, Andrea is an avid music lover and understands the therapeutic benefits of music for young people with a disability. Andrea has attended large music festivals like Big Day Out and Day on the Green. Inner Ignite can provide services in developing daily life skills for community, social and recreational activities that may involve live music through practical planning with transport options, personal care requirements, sensory needs, accessibility and if the venue is companion card friendly. We worked together to plan and prepare, go to Bunnings and even better, get our hands dirty with planting and fertilising! The end result looks pretty good to me and can’t wait for this client to be able to use fresh herbs and veggies in her weekly cooking classes Plus, build her skills and confidence with following her gardening checklist ... 13.01.2022 Did you know as of 1 July 2020, the NDIS Price Guide and Support Catalogue has been updated to include skills development and training services? This means support is now available through NDIS plans to build the capacity of young people and their families/carers. Inner Ignite provides personalised mentoring and training to build this capacity through skills-based learning and daily living and life skills development, such as travel training, handling money, planning social ...outings that are accessible and inclusive, and developing a practical schedule and routine. These things are so important for a young person with a disability to achieve independence, feel valued and reach their potential in life. Inner Ignite has also linked this client in for cooking classes with @I Hate Cooking - Ferny Grove/Western Suburbs in the comfort and familiarity of her own home to build her daily life skills with planning and preparing meals. 01.01.2022 Have you met our Founding Director, Andrea Harrington? As a child, Andrea started to see paediatricians and orthopaedic specialists at the age of five, due to mobility issues, coordination difficulties and falls. For several years, Andrea's family were told she was "pigeon toed", would "grow out of" her walk, or that she was "borderline" Cerebral Palsy. It was not until the age of 10, after multiple assessments and testing by a board of specialists that Andrea received a unan...imous diagnosis of ataxic Cerebral Palsy (lack of balance, coordination and instability with movement and walking). By this age, Andrea had missed the opportunity for early childhood intervention and therapy to assist in managing her Cerebral Palsy. Andrea underwent medical intervention of having both her heels and calf muscles plastered in casts up to her knees to try and improve her mobility and heel to toe walking. After coming out of her plaster casts, Andrea underwent intensive physiotherapy to help her build and gain muscle strength and aim to walk heel to toe, rather than toe to heel. When this was not successful, Andrea wore metal leg callipers on both her legs to help with her mobility. Andrea attended her year seven school camp wearing her callipers. From a young age, Andrea's determination to overcome physical challenges and connect with her friends and the community, shows that having a disability should not be a barrier to living a happy and fulfilled life! Andrea's experience as a person with a disability, combined with 15 years of skill, knowledge and expertise gained working in the disability sector, enables her to provide unique and personalised NDIS services. Andrea's service, Inner Ignite can help children normalise with schooling by identifying their strengths and interests and building a sense of belonging and identity through peer support and mentoring. Inner Ignite works with parents/carers to provide training in overcoming daily challenges their child with a disability may face. For example, managing personal care tasks when going out through proactive planning and creative strategies such as tailor made toiletry bags, to make this task feel more normal.
