24.01.2022 #asanamonday Upavista Konasana or Seated Angle Posture This posture is a great one for releasing tension through muscles of the lower body whilst stimulating blood circulation to the pelvic area. It stretches inner thighs, increases tone through the legs and opens the hips. It is also a beneficial pose for regulating menstrual flow and ovarian function. To come into the pose sit up with legs extended out in front of you then spread them wide apart into a straddle shape. Immed...iately press your knees into the mat and externally rotate your thighs (think sending your knees straight up whilst also rolling your inner thighs up towards the ceiling). Flex your feet to protect your knees joints. This posture intensely stretches the adductors, hamstrings and glutes so as with entry into any posture get feedback from your body. I like to ask myself as I come into challenging postures, does this feel juicy or strained?. If the answer is strained then I know I need to back off a little. Engage Mula Bandha and Uddyana Bandha and focus on lengthening the torso (whether you are upright or folded forward). Roll the pelvis forward and draw the navel in on each inhalation. This pose can be done with index and middle fingers catching the big toes or with the arms extended out in front. The challenge is really to keep the front of the torso lengthening as much as the back. To modify knees can be bent (but legs still super active) or if the lower back collapsing then sitting on a block or folded blanket can offer some extra height through the sit bones making it easier to keep the torso long. Well be practicing this one a lot in class this week! See you there Yogis xx See more

23.01.2022 #mentalhealththursday Yoga has helped me enormously over the years to manage anxiety and stress. Breath awareness is a huge one as when we are feeling anxious we tend to breathe predominantly from the upper chest without fully engaging the diaphragm. The result is usually rapid, shallow breathing which often fuels the state of anxiety. When we start to breathe more slowly and deeply the the diaphragm moves freely and the breath becomes fuller. If you have been used to chest ...breathing for some time then it can be a little challenging at first to remind your belly to soften and the breath to slow and deepen but the effect on the nervous system is quite profound. I find that even a few minutes of conscious yogic breathing can re-centre me and sometimes offer the space to observe thought-patterns and triggers. During our asana practice we naturally drawn into this state of breath awareness which can have hugely beneficial impact on our mental health. The number of times I have walked into a Yoga class or home practice in a state of pretty debilitating anxiety and then left on cloud nine (or pretty close!) are countless. I invite you to explore how yoga can support your mental health and give you the breathing space that you deserve xxx See more

23.01.2022 #asanamonday Astavakrasana/Eight Bend Balance or Eight Point Pose Well continue to explore Astavakrasana in class this week. This arm balance strengthens arms, wrists and abdominal muscles. Surprisingly, its also a strong twist and wonderful compression for the organs. The pose is a great example of the sweet spot that we work with in Yoga, as in this pose you need to find the delicate balance between letting yourself tip forward while your arms work strongly to keep you aloft. Its a personal favourite of mine and there is a stage of the pose for everyone whether thats beginning in a simple cross-legged position, or rocking the cradle, or compass pose, if none of that makes any sense Ive also got you covered. Guaranteed to bring a yogic grin to your face, come and have a play in class with it this week! Xxx

12.01.2022 #asanamonday Balasana/Childs pose is an invitation to drop into a state of awareness, of openness. This pose is often used at the beginning of class to offer us this space for self-enquiry and throughout the class as a chance to check back in, to reconnect with our breath, to calm mental noise, to rest dynamically. This pose can me modified by placing forearms in the ground instead of straight arms and sit bones can be lifted as is comfortable. If knees feel tender a blanket... underneath them offers some cushioning. Practicing balasana to the sound of the crashing sea enabled a deep sense of my breath moving in time with Nature. The ebb and flow of the sea with the breath, the ebb and flow of my breath with the sea. A wonderful too to find a gentle Ujjayi, a subtle constriction in the back of the throat that gives an audible resonance to the breath, also known as Ocean breath. Enjoy Balasana when you want to create space for a child-like awareness and respect for self. #asanamonday # See more

11.01.2022 Happy Full Moon in Leo Yogis. Whether youre an Astrology geek or complete sceptic theres no doubt that a huge silvery moon stirs something very primal in us. Today the Full Moon in Leo can remind us of our own big-hearted luminescence. Dare to shine brightly but be mindful of the needs of others which might not be the same as yours. This week in class well celebrate the freedom of self-expression, the chance to break through any barriers between our hearts and the Universe at large and to experience the joy of embodiment! Shine brightly beautiful Souls!

11.01.2022 #bloopers So this was going to be (never going to be ) an illustration of how Tree Pose can be done anytime, anywhere, even whilst bombing into the sea. But as I left the safety of the shore I realised that coordination in the air is a lot harder than anticipated. It also became apparent that trees need roots so Ill be practicing this one back on land. So fun though Lisa Pusey

11.01.2022 A massive thank you to unbelievably talented artist Luke Cornish - ELK for designing and making this stunning mandala wall mural at our Marrickville studio. It will continue to transform the space and inspire teachers and students for years to come! if you havent already seen this yogis come in and check it out! xx

11.01.2022 Dear students, Due to serious last minute illness our regular Tuesday morning teacher was unable to teach. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience. Thank you for your understanding, Cara x

10.01.2022 #asanamonday Plank pose/kumbhakasana This super-strengthening pose holds the body straight like a plank. It strengthens the whole body and gives a sense of buoyancy through the upper back which is fully expanded by the breath, releasing muscular tension between the shoulder blades. This pose is such an important one and develops and maintains upper body, core, hand and wrist strength that need to be activated before other more challenging poses can be safely built upon. Its ...a foundational and very important pose so its worth mastering. While you build upper body strength this pose can be done with knees on the mat which is way more beneficial and builds strength much faster than doing plank with a sway back/dip or collapse through the slower spine. Knees on the mat in plank is also a great option if your energy is a little low and you wish to choose a less intense option. Well be focusing a lot on plank this week in class so expect some deep core activation and Agni/fire in the classes. As the neuromuscular body starts to integrate this pose it will offer up stability and ease in so many others. So lets get planking Yogis. Remember that fad about 10 years ago where people posted random shots of themselves lying prone on car bonnets, pavements, bars, anything, well they were cheating, they never left the ground ! 06.01.2022 #flowfriday Happy Friday yogis, enjoy!!!! xxxx

06.01.2022 Dearest Marisa Radha Weppner, it was such a pleasure and honour to have you share your wisdom, light and love at the studio over the weekend. The good vibrations generated in your workshops will continue to pulse through the studio for many years to come. Thank you, from Cara, Howie and these beautiful students! Om Shanti

06.01.2022 From Clovelly carpark. The wind and rain nearly blew us over the cliff and the swell was intense and sooooooo beautiful! Bring on Mother Nature!!!!!

05.01.2022 Spot the Yogi! The sea was INTENSE today and as I got wiped straight off that wall it made me laugh bc Id been so determined not to lose my grip on the chain. Id set myself that challenge. The thumping, bubbling, heaving sea swept me off the chain so fast Id been sent to the bottom before I had time to realise. It was just the reminder I needed that sometimes we need to admit when we have no control over something and surrendering to that is the most freeing, life-embracing thing, and loads of fun!!!!!

02.01.2022 Setting up for the Full Moon ceremony last Friday. Thank you to all the wonderful souls who came together to share the magic of this time to reflect on what made our hearts sing through 2019, to let go of anything no longer serving us as we move forward and to set intentions for the days and months to come. Under the light of a Full Moon we practiced Yin with long releasing holds and soaked up the sounds of Besss beautiful voice and her hypnotic crystal Sound Bowls. We will be holding another circle early in 2020 so watch this space. Wishing you all love, light and manifested dreams

02.01.2022 #flowfriday Happy flowfriday yogis! One of the things I love about Vinyasa flow is that the practice is so creative. Whilst every sequence should follow a Vinyasa krama, an intelligent sequencing that honours the arc of a balanced class, there is also so much scope to play! Vinyasa or Vinyasa-krama dates back to the Vedic period of yoga thousands of years ago and referred to a series, or sequence of steps, to make something sacred. So everytime we practice Vinyasa flow yoga we are taking deliberate, fluid steps in sacred space. I invite you to go with the flow and see where the journey takes you, it will never be to the same place.......... xxxx
