25.01.2022 If we were sitting having a coffee and I suddenly asked you to name 7 vegetables starting with C, could you do it without thinking or would you need a few seconds to process what I have asked you?

24.01.2022 Running out of ideas of what to do with your dog? Feeling like its the 'same old thing every day'. Here are some ideas from our friends at R+Dogs and easily listed in some category options to help further the experience.

23.01.2022 Sadly, there has been another confirmed case of Leptospirosis this week in a dog living in Surry Hills. Recently, we were able to confirm another recent case o...f Leptospirosis in another dog from Redfern who died in September. Both dogs were not vaccinated against Leptospirosis and both had to be euthanised due to severe kidney failure. In both cases the strain (serovar) Cophenhageni could be confirmed. This is the serovar against which a vaccine is available. This brings the total case number of infected dogs to 11 in total - 8 have been seen since May this year and all of the dogs have died. Importantly, we have not seen any infected dogs which have been vaccinated against Leptospirosis. Therefore, please vaccinate your dog against Leptospirosis if you live within a 3km radius of Surry Hills or if your dog is in contact with rats. Due to the increased demand for vaccinations there is currently a supply problem - so please contact your veterinarian to make sure that the vaccine is in stock. A vaccine has to be given twice 2-4 weeks apart and yearly thereafter to ensure protection. What is Leptospirosis? Leptospirosis is a potentially fatal bacterial infection that can cause acute kidney failure and liver disease in dogs. Dogs can become infected by contact with urine from rats or indirectly via contaminated water or soil. They can also become infected by hunting and eating rats. Prevention of leptospirosis is achieved by limiting contact to sources of infection and vaccination. Until recently clinical leptospirosis has only rarely been reported in Sydney. Therefore, historically, dogs have not been routinely vaccinated against this disease. Clinical signs can initially be very vague such as lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea. Importantly, leptospirosis is a zoonosis which means that humans can get infected as well, for example through contact with rat urine or urine of infected dogs, through skin wounds or through mucus membranes (eg in the mouth).

13.01.2022 Do you have a fearful or anxious dog? Just like we have fears, we need to recognise that our dogs may also. Then seek appropriate assistance to help our dogs. We recommend finding a positive reinforcement trainer as the first step.

13.01.2022 Puppy biting is normal. It comes with the territory. Remember this mantra to help mitigate the biting: interrupt and redirect. The checklist in the poster bel...ow lists different ways to redirect a puppys natural behavior. And most importantly, never punish puppy biting! You could actually make it worse because the puppy could become anxious and defensive. #BehaviorVets #InterruptRedirect #Puppies #PuppyBiting #RelationshipGoals #MeetingNeeds #TrustTheProcess

12.01.2022 Can never emphasise enough how important it is to understand your dogs body language.

11.01.2022 Off Leash Dogs- its such a contentious issue. There are some key points to remember when you are out and about with your dog, and one of them is, its not neces...sarily about you and your dog. You may have the sweetest, most playful dog that ever lived, but not everyone does, and its unfair on both your dog and the dog who isnt comfortable being approached by other dogs to allow it to occur without checking in. So if the area is not a designated off lead area, ALL dogs need to be on lead, and if you are in an off lead area and a dog is walking through on lead, recall your dog back to you or to another area away from the on lead dog walking through. Remember, there are lots of reasons why someone might not want to have their dog interact with your dog right then and there, so be considerate and lets keep everyone safe and happy.

10.01.2022 Dog Poisoned by the Diffuser Saturday night I got home late and my dog didnt recognize me. Being a nanny I thought I woke him up and he was having a night terr...or. Sunday, he was still acting weird. I realized that I had been running my new diffuser and decided to turn it off. Sunday afternoon, he was feeling better. Today at work, my dog sitter said that he wouldnt come out from under the bed. It was very odd as he is a happy dog. I came from work early and again, he was very confused about who I was. So I took him to emergency vet. It turns out that the tea tree oil I was using in the diffuser is toxic for dogs. Thankfully the test showed that his liver was ok but we werent out of the woods yet. He was given fluids under his skin to get the toxins out. The vet and the poison control are saying that they see these cases often now that the popularity of essential oil is growing. Please make sure that the essential oils you are burning are not toxic for your pets. Here is a list of essential oils not to use if you have a dog at home Anise (Pimpinella anisum) Birch (Betula) Bitter Almond (Prunus dulcis) Boldo (Peumus boldus) Calamus (Acorus calamus) Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) Cassia (Cassia fistula) Chenopodium (Chenopodium album) Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) Garlic (Allium sativum) Goosefoot (Chenopodium murale) Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana) Hyssop (Hyssopus sp. with the exception of Decumbens) Juniper (Juniperus sp. with the exception of Juniper Berry) Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) Mustard (Brassica juncea) Oregano (Origanum vulgare) Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) Red or White Thyme Rue (Ruta graveolens) Santolina (Santolina chamaecyparissus) Sassafras (Sassafras albidum) Savory (Satureja) Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) Terebinth (Pistacia palaestina) Thuja (Thuja occidentalis) Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) Please share this story as it may save someones precious furry family member!

10.01.2022 How are you helping your dog meet his needs?

09.01.2022 Weve received a few reports of dogs being diagnosed with Canine Cough after visiting local parks. Please contact your vet if your dog is showing any of the sym...ptoms below. Canine Cough, also known as Kennel Cough, is an infectious respiratory disease in dogs. It is spread via contact between dogs when playing, mouthing, sharing toys and water bowls and can be easily transmitted between dogs in any area where dogs congregate such as parks, kennels, dog training clubs and day cares. Canine Cough symptoms usually present as a persistent hacking type cough. The coughing can be made worse by exercise and some dogs may stop eating or become depressed and lethargic. If your dog is showing symptoms of Canine Cough, please do not exercise them around other dogs or allow them to share toys or water bowls.

07.01.2022 Its important to set our dogs up to succeed. Start where there are no distractions, then minimal distractions and build your way up from there.

07.01.2022 Sadly, there has been another confirmed case of Leptospirosis diagnosed in a dog living in Darlinghurst. The dog was not vaccinated against Leptospirosis. He wa...s treated at another specialist clinic in the Inner West and died on the 14th of October. We are currently investigating which strain (serovar) was involved. A reminder that it is currently recommended to vaccinate dogs living in areas within a 3km radius around Surry Hills, dogs that go for walks in this area and dogs living in the wider inner west that are known ratters. Two vaccines need to be given 2-4 weeks apart.
