21.01.2022 Planning for the centenary of the 1918 cyclone is well on the way. Things are going really well. The new cyclone book is also almost finished. There is a change of venue for this event -instead of the first planned Warrina Lakes venue it is now being held in the Shire Hall. Write it in your diary now! Saturday 10th March 2018, 7 pm in the Shire Hall, a commemoration of the centenary of the big cyclone which devastated Innisfail 100 years ago. Still thought to be the... biggest cyclone to hit the Queensland coast. The CCRC are assisting with this event and it is going to be BIG. Watch for the publicity posters etc. We will be telling stories of the people who lived through this and showing photos on the big screen documenting the devastation that occurred. 100 years ago they had no emergency services or armed forces to come immediately to their assistance - they were on their own. Also, most of the young men were away fighting in the Great War while here in Innisfail their people at home were fighting a war of their own. We hope we will see you at this function. Thank you all the IDHS supporters who attend our cemetery and town walks. See more

15.01.2022 WHAT A FABULOUS NIGHT WE HAVE HAD TONIGHT. We have just had our cyclone Centenary event in the Shire Hall and it was a major success. Our storytellers all did a wonderful job and Kirsty our compere ran everything smoothly. Special thanks go to Les Cavanagh, Barbara Smith, Jeff Baines, Sheryl Cavanagh, Paul Hynes and Pam Egan, and Kirsty Densmore who also told a story or two while handling the compere's job all evening. The CCRC Council staff who did so much to help with t...he success of the evening - a very special thank you. Thanks too to the members of the Historical Society, it has taken many months to get this evening together and it all came together beautifully. The 1918 Cyclone book will be on sale in the museum as soon as the printer in Townsville is able to get the rest of the order to us. The 40 books we had at the launch tonight were all sold out very quickly. We hope to have some photos of the night to post here very soon. Thank you too, to everyone who came to support us. With the weather we have been having over the last week or two we didn't really expect so many to turn up but you were a fabulous bunch of people to come out to support us and we are so pleased that you enjoyed the night so much. 04.01.2022 What a fantastic night we had on Sunday night when we held our Cemetery Walk. About 150 people turned up and everyone said they had a great time. Our narrators did a wonderful job, John O'Brien entertained with his singing (without music) great job John!. and the Boy Scouts were everywhere holding the lights and guiding people on the ramble from grave to grave. Thank you so much leaders and scouts! In fact one lad said when he was asked if he had enjoyed it that it was better than watching MasterChef on TV. Thank you everyone. Specially those who helped in any way with preparation including the cemetery staff who had the cemetery very tidy and markers set out for us on the night. And of course again, thanks to our narrators and entertainer. Watch for photos!!!

04.01.2022 WOW!!! What an evening we had. A record crowd turned up to hear stories of the old South Johnstone. Many thanks to our great story tellers who brought to life some of the events which gives South Johnstone such an interesting history. Thank you to the local Policeman and Ambulance who added to the colour - and what would it have been without the locos trundling in and out of the mill. Such atmosphere. Thanks also to the South Johnstone State School committee who provided... such yummy refreshments after the walk. And to top it all it DIDN'T rain. We also had a successful book launch of our photographic MEMORIES of SOUTH JOHNSTONE. It was great meeting people we had not seen for ages and catching up. For those who missed out on this fun event, we are hopefully holding a Cemetery Walk in October. So put that in your diary and come along and meet some of our ghostly past. See more
