02.01.2022 Vernon Ah Kee grew up in Innisfail and Cairns. Tragically his father Merv, died in a car accident in 2014. In 2017 the Cairns Art Gallery commissioned him to cr...eate a large graphite drawing of his father for the Gallery Collection. Working from photographs, Ah Kee admits that it was sometimes a painful labour of love that he shared with his mother who often sat with him in the studio as he completed the work. The resulting portrait testifies to Ah Kee’s claim that portrait photographs allow him to ‘penetrate the character of the subject itself’.
