25.01.2022 B R E A T H & P E L V I C F L O O R Yes there is a relationship between your breath and pelvic floor. When you exhale (breath out) your pelvic floor contracts a little. ... when you inhale (breath in) your pelvic floor relaxes a little. It is a beautiful relationship but often when we have altered breathing patterns we can have altered pelvic floor function. When doing turn pelvic floor exercises it is important that you are able to breath through these contractions. When dealing with pelvic floor issues we also need to optimise breath and also thoracic spine and rib control and mobility. #mosman #mosmanphysio #mosmanpelvicfloor #mosmanwomenshealth #cremornephysio #neutralbayphysio #breathingandpelvicfloor See more

21.01.2022 When is the best time to start doing Pelvic Floor exercises after I have a baby? This is a question we often get asked. It is important to really look after yourself in that initial period after you have a baby. While you are in hospital (during those first couple of days) spend time resting in bed. Let your body recovery from childbirth. Then when you are able to comfortably activate your pelvic floor is the best time to start. This should be painfree. Having a pelvic floor assessment before the birth can be helpful to ensure that you know how to activate these muscles correctly.

14.01.2022 ****Oestrogen and its effect on Muscle**** Oestrogen declines in the peri - menopause and post menopause period - so how does this play a role for women and th...eir risk of developing an injury? Oestrogen has many positive effects on skeletal muscle including protection against exercise induced damage, helps with the reduction of inflammation caused by exercise, helps with the enhancement of post exercise muscle repair helps with the recovery of muscle mass after atrophy improved maintenance and enhancement of post menopausal muscle mass and strength improved muscle hypertrophy response to exercise Menopause is characterised by low levels of oestrogen and progesterone. During the menopausal transition muscle loss in women is accelerated. The absence of oestrogen results in women being more prone to skeletal muscle injury and also this limits the regrowth of muscle and recovery of muscle as well as accelerated bone loss . Resistance training and dietary optimisation can help to counter the effects or at least slow the decline of the degenerative aging process. However, we must also appreciate that post-menopausal women have a reduced anabolic response (muscle building) to exercise and diet when compared with younger women or aged match men. Oestrogen replacement therapy (HRT) may counteract the degenerative changes to skeletal muscle and bone. It can also have a positive effect on hot flushes, vaginal dryness, sleep disturbances, mood disturbances, hair loss and sex drive. There are unfortunately, some side effects of HRT which need to be considered. So, what can peri-menopausal and post- menopausal women do about their increased injury risk profile? Ensure that you are eating a well-balanced diet with lots of dairy, healthy fats, whole grains, fruit and vegetables and quality proteins Ensure that you are having adequate rest generally and rest days off high intense exercise Ensure that you are completing at least 2 resistance training sessions per week Exercise regularly #mosman #mosmanphysio #pelvicfloorphysio #cremornephysio #neutralbayphysio #menopause

10.01.2022 Lots of women live with Chronic Pelvic pain and have no idea where to go for help. In fact many women don't even know that there is help available. They are often on the medical merry-go-round looking for answers. Sometimes they have seen health professionals who have told them that they must have weak pelvic floor muscles and therefore prescribe strengthening exercises. Unfortunately often in these women this then makes their pain worse. It can be completely debilitating. We now know that overactive pelvic floor muscles can contribute this this pain experience. A specially trained Pelvic Health (Women's Health) Physio can help to get these muscles to relax. Check out this article on how we can help these women.

10.01.2022 Physio and Endometriosis Endometriosis is a painful pelvic disease that affects up to 10% of women. This can have a devastating effect on the quality of life of some women. Often it takes 7-10 years to get a diagnosis!! ... Endo (as it is commonly known as) is a condition where endometrial (lining of the uterus) like cells grow outside of the uterus. You might be thinking well how on earth can physiotherapy treatment help with this? This is such a good question. Obviously, we are unable to affect the actual growing of the endometrial like cells BUT we can affect a lot of the con-current symptoms that may the pain experience significantly worse for women with endo. Some of these con-current symptoms include pain with intercourse, painful periods, lower back pain, chronic pelvic pain, fatigue and pain with urination and defecation. The fact that it can take so long to get a proper diagnosis means that these poor women are living with horrible pain for so long. This then results in chronic pelvic pain. This pain often results in overactive pelvic floor muscles and the muscles around the pelvis including your glutes and adductors (groin) muscles as well as their abdominal muscles. These overactive muscles can then cause more pain, bladder and bowel dysfunction and painful intercourse. AND being in the pain state for so long also results in a very angry nervous system. Physiotherapy treatment can help with all of these factors. We are able to work on the pelvic floor muscles, glutes, adductors and abdominal muscles to help them to relax. By working on these muscles, we can help resolve bladder and bowel dysfunction, reduce (or hopefully) eliminate pain with intercourse, and eliminate the pelvic pain. We are also able to work on reducing the sensitivity of theirnervous system. This is KEY to reducing the pain for good. We are also able to work with these women to help get them active again without a flareup of their pain. Returning to exercise is such an important part of the recovery for many women struggling with endo pain. If you are struggling with endo and want to get your life back call us on 9960 3798 and book an appointment

05.01.2022 Pelvic Floor Exercises are NOT just about doing isolated pelvic floor contractions while you are lying down (kegal exercises). Yes, it is important to have a strong pelvic floor squeeze and lift BUT this isnt functional. This isnt how your pelvic floor functions during the day. It is vitally important that you integrate your pelvic floor strengthening exercises into common activities you do during the day (like lifting your children or a basket of washing) and also... into your gym routine (while you are squatting or doing your arm exercises). If you feel you have a weak pelvic floor call us for an appointment on 9960 3798 #mosman #mosmanpilates #mosmanphysio #pelvicfloorphysio #pelvicfloorexercises #pelvicfloorstrength #cremorne #cremornephysio #womenshealthphysio See more

02.01.2022 **** World Breastfeeding Week **** The years theme has been: Supporting breastfeeding for a healthier planet. It is about the impact of infant feeding on the environment and the imperative to protect, promote and support breastfeeding for the health of the planet and its people.... KEY MESSAGES: Breastmilk is a natural, renewable food that is produced and delivered to the consumer without pollution, packaging or waste. When we protect and support mothers and breastfeeding, we are also reducing the impact on our air, water and land, protecting our young ones and future generations. Breastfeeding is a sustainable way to feed our infants and young children and provides food and security for them in emergencies and climate-related disasters From the Australian Breastfeeding Association. Gosh what an important message. However, the truth of the situation is that breastfeeding doesnt come easy to many women and their babies. It can be the source of great anxiety and stress. This is not how we want breastfeeding to be. We want it to be a beautiful experience for the mother and baby. For women who struggle - you are not alone, you are not a failure and you dont have to persist at the expense of your mental health. Here is a picture of my daughter mimicking me as I breastfed her sister. I just loved how Emma wanted to be involved. . #breastfeedingweek #mosman #mosmanphysio #pelvicfloorphysio #breastisbest #breastfeeding See more

02.01.2022 Interstitial Cystitis / Bladder Pain Syndrome IC/ BPS is a clinical diagnosis that relies on symptoms of pain in the bladder or pelvis AND other urinary symptoms such as urgency and frequency (in the absence of proven urinary infection or obvious pathology). These symptoms can have a devastating effect on the women and men that suffer IC/BPS, often resulting in depression, stress, anxiety, anger, fear, sleep disturbances, sexual dysfunction, social issues.... the list keep...s going!! Many people with this conditions also report back, hip, SIJ, leg, butt and/or abdominal pain. This is such a complex chronic pain condition that needs a multidisciplinary approach to its management. So, where does Physio fit into this? Well actually it should be the first line of medical treatment. This is the recommendation from the AUA (American Urological Association). So, how does Physio help?? Pelvic floor dysfunction is often contributing to why the urinary symptoms are so bad. And is often the driver of the pelvic pain AND can definitely be contributing to the back pain and sexual dysfunction. As pelvic health Physios we are able to address the pelvic floor dysfunction. We are also able to address the other areas of pain you may be having - back, hip, legs etc. Did you know that Physios also work on the nervous system! We are able to settle down the angry nerves and also work on reducing the sensitivity of the whole nervous system. Connective tissue - lets not forget about the connective tissue that is woven between all of the pelvic organs, pelvic floor and abdominal area. Physios are able to address the connective tissue component to your pain. If you are struggling with IC/BPS and feel that Physio might help you - call us on 9969 3798 for an appointment. #pelvicfloorphysio #pelvicpain #intersitialcystitis #bladderpainsyndrome #womenshealthphysio #bladderpain #mosman #sydney #cremorne
