25.01.2022 And this is what gardening does. It brings joy...even on a tiny scale.

24.01.2022 Now that's an easy way to remember!

22.01.2022 Indoor plants are not really my thing but this is what you're doing wrong if yours are dying... This tip is my favourite - misting ain't watering!

20.01.2022 I love this guy: Ron Finley, the "gangsta gardener" from LA. He planted up his nature strip with food because he was tired of seeing dialysis centres "popping up like Starbucks", and the 45 minute round trip for a pesticide-free apple. Despite providing free food for the neighbourhood, the council asked him to remove the garden, which led to a warrant for his arrest when he refused! As he says, "I'm an artist. Gardening is my graffiti. I grow my art". Now he's making food production sexy and appealing: "If you ain't a gardener, you ain't gangsta. Get gangsta with your shovel, okay? And let that be your weapon of choice."

19.01.2022 Only in Australia.

19.01.2022 Did anyone else love 'The Good Life' TV series growing up? I was so inspired by the Goods' decision to be self-suffient and planned to do it myself one day. I still do. Who can forget Tom making his own suit, dyed green using nettles. Do yourself a favour and watch the first episode here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyZ--z8RpOI https://www.theguardian.com///apr/09/the-good-life-box-set

18.01.2022 Are you using gardening as therapy during coronavirus? I definitely am, especially weeding and pruning. It's really cathartic to cut stuff back or pull things out and see an immediate improvement.

18.01.2022 My poor lemon tree. Constant observation of the garden is so important and my lemon tree is really suffering from a lack of supervision. Good I used the potato peeler method on the gall wasp otherwise there would not have been much tree left. Where I have peeled you can see the tiny holes where the wasps breed. Some areas were so bad they had to be pruned off. And that big one is the biggest I have ever seen!

16.01.2022 Great photobomb!

15.01.2022 Dreaming of travelling. This garden in Singapore is one of the most beautiful places in the world. This time last year we planned my second trip there in September. I'd go again in a heartbeat!

14.01.2022 If you've got a lemon tree, chances are you also have citrus gall wasp. This pest has increased exponentially in residential areas, especially in Melbourne. There's just time left to prune before the wasps emerge in spring. Don't put the cuttings in the compost or the green waste! They need to be disposed of properly to avoid further spread. Check out this very helpful video to find out how to prune and dispose of cuttings.

13.01.2022 Ok it's a bit esoteric but this video from 1926 shows how badly Australia was infested with prickly pear. It also shows one of the first biological control efforts to reduce it using insects. Fascinating stuff! PS It's silent, no sound.

12.01.2022 I didn't even need to see this ad by my former employer Nursery and Garden Industry Victoria (NGIV) to make the leap, but it's very persuasive. I can highly recommmend horticulture as a fantastic career option. I love it!

12.01.2022 Happy National Wattle Day!

10.01.2022 I want to see a corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanum or titan arum) in full bloom just once. It's a remarkable event. The flower usually opens over 12-24 hours only, in some plants occurs once every decade, and smells like, well, a corpse...hence the name. And as in this video shot over 24 hours, it peaked overnight (which is also when it's at its smelliest)! https://youtu.be/7o7CGlITKLI

09.01.2022 I love this. My plants need names...and lives...

09.01.2022 Odd question,,,favourite plant/s in a movie? For me the most memorable is the tree in Passengers, but my absolute favourite is Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors. Must've seen that movie at least 10 times.

09.01.2022 I'm really interested in weeds, especially invasive species in our bushlands. Check out this clever lab who sniffs out seeds of an invasive weed, Chilean needle grass.

09.01.2022 Thank you lovely people for the page likes! Just hit a half century.

08.01.2022 OMG my dream job just came up. Wish me luck!

07.01.2022 Your meditation for today. You're welcome.

07.01.2022 Watch this and wonder. Especially the dahlias.

05.01.2022 It snowed at my late dad's place in Ballarat yesterday. Lovely pics sent by his wife. John Read

04.01.2022 Reptiles have always been my favourite animals. I even did my primary school assigment on the Corroboree Frog. Check out these gorgeous photos and you'll know why. Hope to see some lizards (or even snales?) in my garden soon. Got frogs already!

02.01.2022 In good news this week, camellias are out and they are stunning. Check them out on your walk today. Fun fact: did you know that the streakiness is the camellia below is caused by a virus? It doesn't harm the camellia, but causes its flowers to appear like this.

01.01.2022 I have heaps of brick paving at the new house so of course I get weeds between the bricks. This morning I sprayed them with double strength vinegar (available from supermarkets) and it seems to have worked a treat. Some might need another squirt but most are dead. Best done on a sunny day as the sunlight helps dry them out.

01.01.2022 Wise words about weeds from gardening guru Costa. I like his principles: 1. Ground cover. 2. Mulch. 3. End the war.... 4. Learn more. 5. Eat them. 6. Treat it as exercise. 7. Small bites of the elephant. 8. Be strategic. 9. Research your area's weeds. 10. Make weed tea. I'll add two things I've learnt from seven months of very intense weeding in my neglected garden: 1. Start where the weeds are fewer, to prevent them from getting into new areas, then work your way back to the more heavily infested areas. This also makes you feel like you're making solid progress, rather than working in a patch that regrows as soon as you turn your back. 2. Make weeding your meditation. It works for me. If I am stressed, I head for the oxalis!
