25.01.2022 In Victoria, life has gone from pretty quiet to flat out in no time at all hasn't it? If you have been loving your Pilates and are reaping the benefits of regular classes, try not to let crazy life get in your way. Remember how good you feel after you have finished your class? Save some time for yourself and you will be the better for it and probably be more productive. While Lorri is on leave, Laura will be in the studio on Monday afternoon running the show. With an slight...ly different style of class to Lorri, she will take you through a great range of classical Pilates exercises designed to challenge and build your concentration and core strength. Laura is also available on Friday and Saturday. To book a class https://client.bookingsessential.com/classes.aspx

24.01.2022 Relaxing through your shoulders... Bringing your shoulders down and back... During class youll hear these instructions as we focus on our breath and body tension during each exercise... being in tune with your shoulder placement allows you to focus on activating the correct muscles during a movement and get more out of your pilates exercises.

23.01.2022 DOH!! We knew it would happen, and sadly it has. Stage 3 Restrictions. Our last day of classes will be Wednesday 5 August. These restrictions are set to ease on 13 September so we will see you then.... If you have classes this week (from Thursday) or next, we will cancel them for you. For clients with 10 Class Packs- These will be placed on hold as they were last time so they will be there for you when we return in September. If you would like to come to class this week and havent yet booked, please check the timetable as some of the times have changed (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday). We have scheduled classes on Tuesday this week to give clients a chance to see us again before the doors shut. The 5 August is actually our 1st birthday too!!! We will be in touch with further news/ developments about the studio.

23.01.2022 Lorri has just finished the last class and closed up the studio Isolation round 2 here we go! Keep an eye on our Facebook page over the coming weeks as we will be sharing some home workout ideas to keep you moving until we see you again! Thank you all for your wonderful support. Stay safe everyone x

22.01.2022 We have put our heads together and have added some more evening classes for your enjoyment from next week. From next Thursday 23 July, Laura will run a 5.30pm class. From Monday 27 July, Lorri will be adding a 6pm class to her shift.... Many of you have been asking for these later times and we hope this helps you out a little. We can and will add extra times/ days as demands increases. We suggest you get book your place sooner rather than later as the classes will likely fill quickly.

22.01.2022 In Laura's classes this week the pace is slow and steady. The focus is to become more familiar with the Reformer and just to enjoy the movement that this equipment can offer. Laura has a few clients who are new to Pilates at In Shape, besides that, it's been 3 months off for our regulars. Enjoy your classes everyone. he will be revisiting some old favourite moves to help reinforce

21.01.2022 ~ I S O L A T I O N M O T I V A T I O N ~ The plank! This is a popular exercise in Pilates and is a position that strengthens your core and gives your whole body a workout. A plank tones arms and legs, and especially the shoulder, back, and abdominal muscles. How to perform a plank:... * Balance on your forearms and toes with the body in one straight line, elbows directly under your shoulders. * Relax your shoulders and engage your core, pulling your abs in an up, as you maintain the plank and aim for for 60 seconds. Holding a plank for too long can cause pain if you have existing back problems because when your muscles get tired, the stomach sags down and puts pressure on the lower back so please ensure you focus on drawing your belly button towards your spine and think ribs to hips while holding a plank. If you need to, decrease the time and aim for 30 seconds then increase your hold as your core strength builds. We would love to hear how you progress during isolation! Dont forget to check out our newsletter on the website for more motivation.

20.01.2022 Who loves a Magic Circle? Monday Magic Circle classes- that’s what Lorri delivered yesterday. From what we hear, clients who attended class last night with Lorri just might be feeling their inner thighs today!!... Lorri had participants squeezing the circle with ankles then knees while they had feet in straps. Squeezing with knees with a clam. Holding the circle up to the ceiling with a squeeze while they did leg and foot work. All of this helps to strengthen inner thighs, abdominals, shoulder stabilisers -some of the core muscles. Magic Circles can be used by squeezing, pulling or just holding to add some intensity or complexity to a Pilates class. Just holding the circle in a particular way will bring some awareness to your abdominal muscles too. Monday Magic Circle Class will be back next Monday nights too with Lorri at 4, 5 and 6pm.

19.01.2022 How has reduced activity in recent weeks affected your body? Has your lower back pain returned, spine stiffened, hips ache, feeling physically tired quickly, low energy, not sleeping so well................? These are some of the changes that happen when we are not so active. If you have noticed any of these symptoms it's probably time to get back to Pilates or come and start Pilates with us.... Keeping your body moving and tiring it out physically is so good for you. We have noticed flexibility in clients' spines, legs and shoulders etc being reduced and observed a reduction in strength across the board (this does not apply to everyone of course). Core muscle strength in general for many has been lessened and we fully expect this to be restored fairly quickly as the muscles "remember" what to do Pilates has been described as being somewhere in between Yoga and Gym. Its gentle and effective. Our instructors are encouraging and are quick to offer extra assistance if needed. Julie, Laura and Lorri are looking forward to welcoming you back here at In Shape Pilates as soon as you can make it.

19.01.2022 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!!!!!! Can you believe its 1 year since we opened as "In Shape Pilates"? So we actually took the business over from n8 Health (next door), who had a Pilates studio here called n8 Pilates.... We have continued to work closely with n8 Health who have also been an amazing support to us in getting our own studio up and going. To them we say a huge "Thank you". Over the last year we have been able to continue Pilates classes for previous n8 Pilates clients but have also gained so many of our own new clients. We have also welcomed 2 new teachers to the studio -Lorri and Laura who are fantastic at what they do and they themselves have managed to build up a clientele and following of their own. Having 3 teachers to hand enables us to provide more classes in the week and each of us offer something a little different to the way we teach and what teach. This in turn gives clients a different and more rounded Pilates experience. But what a year its been. We have had some fun on at Golden Square Bowls and Croquet Club, Christmas drinkys. Brand new Reformers that have transformed what and how we teach Pilates. We managed to survive the 1st wave of "you know what" and with any luck we will bounce back just as strong in September. New classes were introduced- In-Tensity, Kids and Teens classes (we will bring them back when life settles down a little more). Thank you to you all for allowing us to help you, for spreading the word about us, having fun and gaining some strength in those bodies of yours. See you in the studio . xx

16.01.2022 This week in Lorri classes - the Jump Boards are making a come back in Dynamic groups, -building (or rebuilding) strength in major muscles is the focus in other groups . 16.01.2022 As Laura is taking extra classes this week, Julie is too. On Wednesday afternoon 4 & 5pm. In the pipeline this week the Dynamic classes (and maybe in Laura's classes too), will be working on the swing bar press up with feet once more. It was such a hit last week. With many layers to work with there are challenges for any one with plenty of time to stick with one part of the movement to refine it if need be before moving ahead with more complex parts. Both Laura and I had ...a lot of fun with that last week. There will be some standing leg work for anyone who fancies that too (options for clients who would rather not stand up high). This will work on the inside and outside of the legs and glutes too. Let's get the box out too, it's been ages!!!! Jump Boards? Who wants to do that? As you can see, a bit of variety there. Looking forward to seeing you this week.

16.01.2022 Theres lots of stuff going on isnt there? We thought this may be a good time to recognise the hardships that many families, individuals and businesses are experiencing at the moment and probably will do for some time to come. As if CV wasnt enough to factor into daily life, many individuals and families will have an extra level of complexity added in. What I like to call a plus COVID thing. ... This may come in the form of illness, business closure, a loss of job, families with special needs children learning to adapt to a change in routines, new babies, living in an area away from family and friends..... this list is endless really when you think about it. COVID itself has caused us to live in a completely foreign way to the way the human race is meant to which is not a great way to live is it? All this said, lets see if we can support some community groups/charities and some of our In Shape Pilates clients who may own a small or large business of their own. Many will likely have experienced a down turn in trade. Some may find they are busier than ever. We invite any clients with a business to email Julie a flyer/copy of a business card/ blurb about your business and we will promote it here on our FB page and put your info in the next newsletter. You can remain anonymous if you like. You have all been so amazing at supporting our little studio, now let us help to support your business too.

16.01.2022 Come and Try Pilates- its FREE so what's stopping you? In this small group you will see what Pilates actually is all about. You will see that they are not as complicated as they look,... -be part of a small supported group where you can ask as many questions as you like and work at your own pace. At In Shape Pilates we will show you how Pilates will improve your overall strength, balance and flexibility with gentle. low impact and challenging exercises. If you have always wondered about Pilates, now is your chance to come and see for yourself . Our next FREE Come and Try Class will be this Wednesday 25 November at 6pm. 15.01.2022 BREATH and FLOW Music. Got to love it!!!! Music can invoke emotions cant it. Makes you feel better, allows you to be in a bad mood, lifts your mood, brings back memories......... I discovered this playlist today on Apple Music. Electronic in style but light and airy and a perfect tempo for good mood, walking, running, doing the house work. If you have and Apple music subscription I encourage you to listen to this. Having found it on a long brisk walk I just did, I feel AMAZING. While walking I found my breathing rhythm better and I could focus on maintaining a better, more consistent tempo. Theres those Pilates principles again- BREATH AND FLOW. Anyway, I found it quite inspirational and wanted to share it with you. The style of music may not be your taste, maybe it is. Though it might be worth a try. https://music.apple.com/au/station/lastlings/ra.1528483735

15.01.2022 More Dynamic Classes have been added- Monday and Wednesday 11am and 4pmMore Dynamic Classes have been added- Monday and Wednesday 11am and 4pm

14.01.2022 Look at these ladies go... a challenging new exercise and they nailed it! Fantastic core activation and muscle control... look at the elongation of those legs! So proud

14.01.2022 In Julie's classes this week we are continuing to work on breathing techniques and exercises which help strengthen pelvic floor. Pilates exercises will help pelvic floor to gain strength (by increasing the mobility of the mid/ upper back, and generally increasing core muscle strength and using breath as a tool too), but we will focus on some more specific moves (and you wont even know that your pelvic floor is working!!). Did you know that when you breathe out (exhale), your ...diaphragm lifts up and pushes the air out of the lungs. When this happens, pelvic floor muscles also contract and pull gently up towards the abdominal cavity. We have been working on increasing the exhale (breath in the nose and breathe out to the count of 5,10 and 15). This will strengthen the diaphragm and improve the efficiency of the lungs. Here's something for you to practice. -while you are out walking breathe in through the nose and out of the mouth. -when you have this sorted, breathe out for twice as long through your mouth, -now breathe out of the mouth counting up to 5 a few times. -now breathe out counting to 10 then 15 and so on. See what number you can get up to. TIP: use your steps to help you count to exhale. Let us know what you notice.

14.01.2022 Thank you for helping us. Recently Meg decided to make some knitted headbands to raise some money for a local charity who is assisting our local community. We are happy to say that our clients at In Shape Pilates have helped to raise $50 which has today been paid to Bendigo Foodshare. ... They do some great work assisting families, schools and organisations in Regional Victoria. Thank you Meg for a great idea. For more info about Bendigo Foodshare, have a look at their website. https://bendigofoodshare.org.au/

12.01.2022 Friday classes will now commence at 9.15am. All the classes will now all begin at 15 mins past the hour and not on the hour. A Dynamic Class has also been added to Friday-9.15 to cater for our more experienced clients. The honeymoon time is over. ... Laura has been gradually been increasing the intensity of her Foundation classes to suit clients needs and abilities . More technical moves are coming in and new exercises are being taught to build on core strength and add extra challenges. In Lauras classes you can expect to work all areas of your body with a combination of Traditional Reformer exercises, some mat work and stretches. Laura has classes on a Friday, Saturday and Thursday evenings-group and 1:1 classes. You may see her other days from time to time.

12.01.2022 "Dynamic" classes are making their way back into the timetable. These classes are suitable if you have attended a few Foundation level classes and are more confident with your Pilates. Exercises can be more complex and challenging with a faster tempo too. If you are unsure whether Dynamic classes are for you, please ask us in class or drop us a line.... Keep an eye out for these classes on the timetable.

10.01.2022 The first charity group we would like to support is Bendigo Food Share. "Financial hardship, isolation, and food insecurity are rising, and a growing number of central Victorians need emergency food. At Bendigo Foodshare, we work with almost 90 charities, schools, and community groups to feed more than 12,845 people each week." What a terrific group who accept surplus food from supermarkets/ manufacturers etc and send them to schools, families.... Julies daughter Meg decided to support a local charity that was assisting the community with COVID issues so she made some lovely warm head bands. They are here in the studio for $15 each. She will donate $5 from each sale to Bendigo food Share. We would be happy to accept a cash donation instead if you like too and will pass this all onto them. For more information about the wonderful work Bendigo Food Share do, take a look at this link. https://bendigofoodshare.org.au/

09.01.2022 To better understand the importance of wearing a face covering correctly, its worth reading this short video from our Chief Medical Officer, Dr Brett Sutton. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1j4Ru6ltJgo

09.01.2022 CONCENTRATION-"the action or power of focusing all ones attention." One of Joseph Pilates principles, he wrote-"concentrate on the correct movements EACH TIME YOU EXERCISE......" You can adapt this principle to many aspects of your life cant you? ... While you are going for a brisk walk- concentrating on your breath, holding your core strong, swinging the arms. Concentrating on the podcast you are listening to. Concentrating on the new recipe you are trying. Concentrating on the tricky task you just set yourself. Concentrating on your PILATES. Long legs, holding your core strong, breaking the movement down into little bits to perfect it. When you learn to concentrate well, tasks that you used to have to really think about become second nature- as will your Pilates. Picture credit Pilates-conncection.com.au Pilates quote-"Pilates Life Through Contrology"

08.01.2022 Hello everyone. From Monday, all clients attending our studio will be required to wear a face covering of some sort. Please visit our website and read our new procedures before attending your next class. Its going to feel quite different for us all but it is a necessary step to keep the vulnerable people in our world safe.... https://www.inshapepilates.com.au/blank-page-1

07.01.2022 Good morning. Did you know that man had larger airways and straighter teeth 40000 years ago? I was just listening to a radio interview with James Nestor-author of Breath.... It was really interesting. This man has done lots of research in the art of breathing. So it seems most of us in the Western world are quite bad a breathing correctly- mostly breathing through our mouth which delivers less oxygen to the body than through the nose. The effects of shallow breathing etc can be the cause of things like elevated blood pressure. Smaller airways lead to snoring and sleep apnoea. Breath is an important part of our Pilates practice. The information shared here highlights this point. The interview was on Life Matters (Radio National) today. There are also some you tube interviews I have found. Ill put the link here for a short version but I recommend you listen to the 54 minute one too. Will put more links to this type of thing on our website too. Let me know your thoughts. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qrJ2a_LgXL0

07.01.2022 Do you know what? We really do need to congratulate each and everyone of you, our clients for helping us to keep our studio and equipment clean and as free of nasty germs as possible. We are so impressed to see how thoroughly the Reformers are cleaned down after each use. This hopefully will give you all confidence to knowing you will not "catch anything" while you are here with us.... Keep up the great work everyone and the awesome habits of washing your hands too. Us teachers are getting used to the idea of not helping you out with equipment changes (its not easy you know!).

06.01.2022 Lorri has been super busy running Come and Try classes for some Bendigo Health staff. She was able to provide some fun and challenges to these "angels". We ran these classes over two weeks and they proved to be very popular. Thanks Lorri for taking these classes for us. Lorri has also added a 6pm Class to her schedule on a Monday. We hope that this time slot will will help out those of you who work long hours during the day. ... Lately in Lorris classes there have been lots of familiar moves (which enables clients to really refine them), then lots of different options too for those who need/ want modifications. There will always be something different in a class to keep up the challenges and variety. Lorri likes to mix up the springs from heavy to super light to really work the core. The jump board came out this week too as a "treat" for those who have never used it before. Some single leg in straps were thrown in too to challenge hip stability and to encourage slow and controlled movements. Lorri was also able to show clients where their obliques are-those are the side abdominal muscles. Lorri is available for classes on a Monday 4,5 and 6pm and Wednesday 4 and 5pm.

06.01.2022 Its almost the start of another week- already!!!!! We hope you managed to make the most of the beautiful sunshine. Whats available this week? NEW Foundation class on Wednesday at 1.30 and Thursday 2.30.... Almost full-Monday 5pm Thursday 5.30 Friday and Saturday morning too. Availability still in Monday 5,6pm, Wednesday 4,5pm. If you would like to attend one of our morning group classes, they are mostly full but you can be added to the waiting list if you would like. Let us know,or book online so we can add you to a class.

05.01.2022 At In Shape Pilates our breathing helps facilitate correct muscle activation and increases the safety of the exercises we do. The reason its important to focus on directing the breath into the sides of the ribs (rather than the lower stomach) is that this helps to keep the abdominals activated when performing exercises! #adoreyourcore Your breath also helps you to feel connected and reminds you to relax and be present... simply breathe! The most basic way to do mindful breathing is to focus your attention on your breath, the inhale and exhale. The idea is simply to focus your attention on your natural rhythm and flow and the way it feels on each inhale and exhale. #simplybreathe

04.01.2022 It's "Magic Circle Monday" today. You may see this lovely prop making an appearance in your class during the day. . The circle will help to strengthen your core muscles- that's not only your abs either. Your Core muscles also include your upper back, lower back, glutes, chest too. ... It will be fun to sue you will see!!!

04.01.2022 Following on from Lorris post about breathing....... Focusing on breathing (which is a Pilates principle) is really heightened while we exercise -even more so at the moment. Wearing a mask while walking does bring your attention to the inhale and exhale. Thinking about this myself when I was walking around the reservoir I realised I was counting the inhale and exhale. This helps to keep your breath good and steady. ... Notice where you breath into, your chest or your tummy? See what happens to your core control if you change where you direct your breath . A little bit of mindfulness for you. Also a really practical use for your Pilates. When you are on your next walk/bike ride with your mask on, take a photo and share it so we can see your faces (or half of a face). Let us know your thoughts on how you breath with a face covering. Ps-the Reservoir reserve area was beautiful with creeks running fast. I also ditched the glasses after a while, it was like walking in a fog!!

03.01.2022 Here are some snaps of what some of our clients have been up to this week in classes. The jump board has been used quite a bit in Julies classes-(a request from one of our clients so you can blame her). The board has been used to really get the heart pumping-a good cardio workout. ... Lie down jumping gives the legs a big work out, kneeling arm work is great for challenging balance and the stabilising muscles. We can also use the Jump Board for standing stretches, co-ordinating arms and legs, and foot walking to wake up all of those little muscles. Its been great fun and challenging for clients at all levels-lots of smiles all round. Theres still a couple of places left in classes tomorrow morning, Saturday morning and in our new 5.30 class tomorrow.

03.01.2022 Challenge your balance and strength here with this 10 min programme for you from Pilates Anytime. In this short video there are some alternatives to the Reformer leg and foot work we regularly instruct in classes. Some Plank, Teaser and Bridges . Something for the whole body. You may find it a little tricky but, as the teacher in the vid says (Courtney Miller), do this daily for 10 days and see what improvements to your balance and strength and stamina you notice .... Good luck and tell us what you think and how you go. https://www.pilatesanytime.com//Pilates-Mat-Workout-by-Cou

A Dynamic class is suitable for those who have attended a few Foundation level classes and have a really good grasp on their technique. In these classes we can take you through more complex moves and you will surprise yourself how well you can execute them. Just like in any Foundation level class, we tend to revisit new moves to give you th...e chance to get used to it and improve even more. If you are unsure whether to step yourself up a little, please ask Julie, Laura or Lorri for advice, or call Julie 0438 562535. We have now added a Dynamic class to the timetable for each day now including Friday and Saturday. Use this link to check availability. https://client.bookingsessential.com/classes.aspx See more

02.01.2022 With three knowledgeable and passionate Pilates instructors you know that at In Shape Pilates you are going to experience an awesome class. Each has their own style of what they deliver in their classes but share a common goal in delivering a class to their client's needs. With a maximum of 4 per class we are able to get to know the client, their abilities, their needs and can offer effective feedback to help them achieve their goals. We love to watch as clients' technique i...mproves, they become stronger, watch as legs get straighter, see spines move better... week by week we see it and it is so exciting to see. These improvements carry on and make a difference when our clients leave the studio and go about their day. Pilates may not be that activity that gets the heart rate up and make you burn all over all of the time, that is what running and gyms etc are for. The benefits of Pilates sneak up on you when you aren't looking. It can be slow/moderate pace and precise - but so so effective and really fun and challenging all at the same time. Classes are available 5 days a week for new and existing clients. Lorri looks forward to working with you Monday and Wednesday evenings 4, 5 and 5pm. Laura would love to see your smiling faces on Friday and Saturday mornings. Julie will put you through your paces on Monday, Wednesday and Thursdays.

01.01.2022 Hello all. Time for a short history lesson now!! Today we are stepping back in time with Romana Kryzanowska- a student of Joseph Pilates in the 1940s. In this link to our BLOG you can see a couple of videos showing traditional Pilates without all the frills.... I encourage you to have a look and try some of what you see in the video. There is more explanation in the link. Sounds intriguing doesnt it??? https://www.inshapepilates.com.au//adapting-reformer-leg-a

01.01.2022 Swing those hips... going for a walk is a perfect opportunity to get out of the house and into the fresh air during isolation and its a simple way to keep those hips moving while the ISP studio is closed! While on your walk focus on your posture and core muscles, relax your shoulders and remember to take long deep breaths rather than short and shallow. Aim to get out of the house for a walk for at least 30 minutes daily and dont forget to include some hills for variety!

01.01.2022 WOW!!! Our COME AND TRY CLASS for Wednesday is full already. We are looking forward to introducing our lovely equipment, studio and of course our teachers to some new clients. We have added more classes to Laura's timetable this week on Friday and Saturday morning. If you would like to come to class late afternoon/ evening, Lorri still has a couple pf places left this Wednesday.... In Julie's classes this week she is working on refining technique for those clients/ groups who are up to this phase of their Pilates practice. So yes, "picky" Julie is back. Tweaking technique in leg and foot work, perfecting the shape of chest lifts. As a result of consistent Pilates practice and refinement we are beginning once more to see those spines move again easily in all directions just like they were designed to do. There is a big focus on breath too for those who are up to that part too. Remember-in the nose and out of the mouth and slow down the exhale!! See you in the studio
