18.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday When the Great Depression hit, a shanty town was built in Flinders Street, Port Kembla, to provide housing. It is said the settlement originally consisted of around 200 wooden-framed makeshift huts, with walls of corn bags painted with whitewash or lime - the floors were dirt and kerosene tins were used as chimneys. In around 1935 the original settlement was replaced and became known as ‘Spoonerville’ named after the minister in charge, Eric Spooner. Spoon...erville was still in existence in the late 1940’s when Australian Iron & Steel Ltd proposed to build a 44,000 hostel for 100 of its single male employees in the vicinity. 18.01.2022 Public Statement Inside Industry Operations The Board and Management of Inside Industry have been in discussions with its Key Partner BlueScope, over recent days, to consider the continuation of its Tours, in light of the current COVID-19 Pandemic. After careful consideration, a decision has been made that Steelworks and Port Tours will be suspended. The health, safety, and well-being of Bluescope staff working in the Steelworks, the Inside Industry Staff (including Tour Gu...ides) and our clients is of paramount importance to us and the need to take on guidelines for social distancing, to address transmission of the virus, has led to this decision. We know that this will be a disappointment to our many clients, especially as we planned for a busy school holiday program and Easter Group Tours, but we can assure our clients and the community that we will be back, with some new tours and activities, when it is safe to do so. We will be in contact with all our sponsors, media partners, schools, group organisers and external suppliers over the next week to discuss our plans for resumption and recovery at the end of this international emergency. At this time, the Visitor Centre is still available for use and hire by external parties, with some necessary safety protocols implemented. The Visitor Centre now has a full range of technically superior facilities that are ideal for use as ‘virtual meeting spaces’. Please contact (02) 4275 7023 to address any enquiries regarding tours or use of the Visitor Centre. Inside Industry Proudly Connecting Community and Industry
