25.01.2022 "Eating disorders are not gender specific...they affect every demographic". It is true that the peak period for onset is between the ages of 12 and 25. .... It is also true that women are at high risk, particularly those going through key transition periods (e.g. from school to adult life). However, this high risk has led to the widespread misconception that eating disorders only affect females. . In reality, eating disorders can affect anyone, just ask our Champion Liam. The inspiring pair were at the launch of 'SupportED', a new online skills-based program for anyone supporting a loved one with an eating disorder. ... It's packed with information, resources, video role plays and advice from those who've been through a similar journey. The research by Western Sydney University shows that 27 per cent of Indigenous adults have an eating disorder, compared to 16 per cent of non-Indigenous adults. We speak to lead researcher Dr Adam Burt about the findings and the implications.

"I sent off a sample of my DNA to QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, filled with the hope that it will help other people around the world who are at risk of or are currently experiencing eating disorders." 08.01.2022 Want to know why the (appropriately socially distanced) team behind the Mid North Coast Paediatric Inpatient Eating Disorder Program are smiling? They've just won the Mid North Coast Health award for excellence in the provision of mental health services. The program is a collaborative, district wide effort between paediatrics, dietetics and youth mental health which allows local families to access evidence-based eating disorder treatment close to home.... The program has resulted in: -Improved staff confidence, knowledge and awareness of eating disorders - Significantly increased eating disorder admissions - Implementation of multidisciplinary case conferences, family meetings and outreach in all admissions. The results show that evidence-based treatment for paediatric eating disorders can successfully be provided locally with specialist tertiary support. Congratulations!

Refreshingly though, I also believe that these days of isolation could also generate new possibilities and positive change.
