16.01.2022 Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending. --Maria Robinson. Mental health is an essential component of wellbeing. Though illness is not the exact reverse of health, mental illness can be considered as lack of mental health. Mental illness is a health issue that affects the individual’s cognitions, emotions, and behaviour considerably, and is diagnosed on the basis of certain standardized criteria. People affected by me...ntal health problems often have high levels of morbidity and mortality, experiencing poorer general health and higher rates of death from a range of causes, including suicide. Not only do people with mental illnesses experience psychological diffculties that prevent them from enjoying life to the fullest, they are also marginalised in society, discriminated against, and forced to deal with a baseless stigma. This stigma affects not only their own lives, but also those of their family and friends. Indeed, mental illness itself is disempowering but our society's use of language, media, and cultural norms has played a huge role in marginalizing those who suffer from it. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2008), almost half the population experience mental health problems but only one third seek treatment from mental health services. Coming back to the quote used in the beginning, I would like to say recovery is the new beginning that challenges us to focus on brighter side in the lives of people by including them in the community and helping them to achieve their full potential.
