25.01.2022 I am always talking to people about taking care of the self, recharging your batteries, and making sure your mind and body are healthy and strong but I admit I am not that person who makes time for self care. However, today I tried a float at Albury Float Rooms and can I just say it was really great! Relaxing every muscle in my body was a surreal experience and one I will definitely do again, I felt relaxed for hours afterwards and my mind felt clear. I worried that depriving... my senses would be unsettling and I think for some it may but the staff were really great at making sure I felt comfortable and I was aware that i was in control at all times and could choose how 'deprived' my senses could be (light in or off, music on or off, capsule open or closed). This was really comforting and made the experience even better. Thank you. What's your self care strategy for this week? Comment below www.insighttherapiesvic.com.au
21.01.2022 Sometimes fear takes hold over us when we feel uncomfortable feelings or re-live painful memories. Our bodies often think they must react to these feelings strongly as an act of survival only leading into even more debilitating physical reactions. Being compassionate with ourselves and allowing feelings to be felt, and honouring the fearful place they come from is a key step towards reassuring the body we are safe and beginning to allow the processing of experiences to take ...place. Letting go of the fight against these feelings can feel overwhelming, and can actually be too much if not done correctly. Quality, safe therapeutic support whilst engaging in this process is important. We need to be safe before we can start to feel safe. So let 2021 be the year you move forward in life and reach out for help when you need it. www.insighttherapiesvic.com.au #reachoutforhelpwhenyouneedit
18.01.2022 A couple more that are hilarious but not quite website headshot quality (I love that smile!)
17.01.2022 2020 has come to an end for Insight Therapies with us taking a break for a few days as of this afternoon. We will reopen on January 5th with two gorgeous dogs who will be busting to see all of their favourite people again! Although the holiday season is a happy time for many, it can also be very difficult for others, in particular with restrictions impacting our ability to see family and friends. Beyond Blue has some great information on their site https://www.beyondblue.org....au//suppo/coping-with-christmas and 24/7 access to mental health professionals over the holiday period on 1300 22 4636 should you need support. Take care and thank you all for your support and interest in our much loved service. See you in 2021! Kaluah, Bacardi & Anita #reachoutforhelpwhenyouneedit www.insighttherapiesvic.com.au
16.01.2022 Turns out I'm not that good at totally switching off! Kaluah is keeping me company while I get some work done towards my 'Rise Up' supervision certification. The Rise Up supervision model and training is recognised by ACA, PACFA, AASW, ACWA, APC, Counsellors Victoria, Professional counselling Association of NSW & ACT and the South Australian psychotherapy & counselling association. ... So, for those working in the social work or counselling fields and looking for a supervisor, I will be providing clinical supervision from March 2021 after I formally complete the process. Now to take a break and get back to recharging the batteries. Happy holidays from the Insight Therapies team www.insighttherapiesvic.com.au
16.01.2022 We need help! Kaluah needs a head shot for the website and I can't choose. Please take a minute and note your favourite photo in the comments below
15.01.2022 A great tip for helping stay safe when meeting new dogs. Its always important to respect the dog's space and individual needs whilst ensuring we keep ourselves safe as well.
14.01.2022 A lovely lady I met this week suggested I share the meaning of my logo. So for those who may be interested, here goes... I chose to use a circle to represent the continuous nature of learning and change, and the safety and containment that i hope to provide to those who come to see me. The botanicals entwined on the circle represent how when provided the right environment, we each possess the capacity to grow strong and blossom.... The dragonfly is extra special to me, it was hand painted by my mother especially for this logo. It represents transformation and the ability to overcome times of hardship. Dragonflys are said to be the keepers of dreams, the energy within that sees our true potential and abilities. Most importantly, they are survivors, having lived on this earth for 300 million years reminding us that anything is possible www.insighttherapiesvic.com.au
12.01.2022 What makes AAT so great? Part 2. The benefits of AAT for individuals have been shown to include consistent improvements in four main areas: * Autism spectrum symptoms (e.g., positive social interactions and communication)... * Medical difficulties (e.g., lowering of heart rate and blood pressure and increased motor skills & co-ordination) * Behavioural problems (e.g., reduction in verbal resistance, aggression, violence & increased compliance with rules) * Emotional well-being (e.g., reduction in anxiety, fear & depression) Research around AAT reports findings which suggest AAT is a calming, engaging approach, that improves health conditions and offers unique benefits for encouraging social development, positively influencing an individual’s experiences of anxiety and increasing engagement in daily activities and self-care. Additionally, by building positive and trusting relationships with therapy animals, this experience can function as an ‘emotional bridge’ to support the expansion of learnt skills into relationships with others. 10.01.2022 I am often asked what animal assisted therapy is with people often assuming it involves just adding a dog in the room or having a loving face to share your worries with, but it is SO MUCH MORE than that! Quality AAT involves specific, focussed interventions where the animal is deliberately included as part of the therapy session. This is why it is so important that animals and therapists are properly trained and certified in the delivery of this modality to really reap the b...enefits. Having a dog in the session does bring comfort, improves engagement and offers physical stress relieving benefits, but this alone is not AAT and means clients only get half the benefit that this modality can provide. Over the coming weeks I will be posting about AAT and the benefits of engaging in this form of therapy. In the meantime, if you would like to know more about how Insight Therapies uses AAT to engage meaningful outcomes where other traditional therapy approaches may struggle, please reach out and we will be happy to discuss our locally unique approach with you by phone or in person. www.insighttherapiesvic.com.au
10.01.2022 A big thank you to Chris at Chris Kelly Signs for an amazing job creating this for my back window. Bacardi is the star of the show again and I love the finished product!
10.01.2022 What makes Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) so great? Part 1: As per my previous post, I thought I would share some things over the coming weeks about what makes quality AAT so great. I want to be able to help people understand what this approach brings to therapy which makes it different from other more traditional modalities, and why it is important to make sure your therapist and their animal are appropriately trained. Engaging an animal in therapy sounds easy, but it require...s the therapist to work hard to be aware of, and to manage, the multiple relationships in the room. There is the relationship between the therapist and the animal, the animal and the client and the client and the therapist, and if these relationships are not managed safely, the client can feel a sense of increased anxiety, get distracted from engaging fully in therapy or even feel rejected by the animal resulting in a negative impact on their sense of self-worth and value. However, when the therapist is able to engage the animal and client together safely and with purpose, the outcomes can exceed anything a single therapist alone could provide. Safety is so important, and not just in relation to physical safety (which is another area the therapist must be trained in) but the psychological safety felt within relationships are crucial. This is especially important for those whose past experiences make it difficult for them to trust others, and a space where AAT can provide an invaluable resource for them to begin to trust and build meaningful connections again. This is in part due to the ability for the animal to provide connection and acceptance to the client without any ulterior motive or judgement, and for those who struggle to trust or hold emotional scars from past traumas caused by those who were supposed to love and protect them, this experience of safety within a relationship is invaluable. Exposure to and participation in this type of relationship breaks down barriers built to protect the self from others and creates the building blocks required to heal and trust others again. But, in order for the client to gain the most benefit or impact from this experience of relational safety, the therapist needs to be skilled at recognising the animal's and the client’s subtle cues and use these purposefully to support the felt sense of connection, acceptance and safety. I will follow this post up in the coming weeks with more ways in which quality AAT can provide meaningful benefits to therapy but, if you would like to know more in the meantime, please feel free to reach out via phone or email so we can arrange a time to chat about how AAT through Insight Therapies may be able to help you or your child. www.insighttherapiesvic.com.au #reachoutforhelpwhenyouneedit
09.01.2022 I really love this quote, how many of us see our scars as signs of pain, weakness or defeat? What if we viewed them differnetly? What if we wore them with pride instead of shame or sadness? BE PROUD of those scars. THEY DO NOT define you, they simply show how much stronger you are than anything or anyone that tried to break you #reachoutforhelpwhenyouneedit ... www.insighttherapiesvic.com.au See more
09.01.2022 Day 2: Violence against women is an issue across the globe. Let’s stand together and change the narrative which enables it #16days
05.01.2022 Day 3: A key step in ending gender based violence is education. Afterall, how can we provide support and help change dangerous attitudes when we don't understand the issue? https://viivhealthcare.com//cracking-down-on-gender-based/ #16days #reachoutforhelpwhenyouneedit www.insighttherapiesvic.com.au

02.01.2022 One of my passions is supporting victim survivors of family violence in their recovery. In support of the 16 days of activism which begins today, I will be sharing posts relating to ways in which we can address gendered inequality and promote the safety and protection of women. Violence is never acceptable, no matter what form it comes in or who makes the choice to use it. Let's take steps as a society to address the underlying issues which causes ongoing suffering, pain and death to those who have the right to feel safe and live free from violence. Enough is enough. #16daysofactivism #saynotoviolence #reachoutforhelpwhenyouneedit www.insighttherapiesvic.com.au
